seriouslycrazy
For you Americans, HMV is a reliable, well known shop that mainly sells DVD's, CD's and games. And just like all the gaming sites, they too had the opportunity of meeting R* to preview the game... If you want the full review go here. Anyway, half way down the first page they say this... We drive around the seedy streets of Broker, which is supposed to be the more run-down part of the city, before making our way on to Broker Bridge. Crossing the river, we find ourselves in Algonquin, GTA 4’s equivalent to Manhattan, and bang in the middle of Star Junction, a brilliant and bustling representation of Times Square. ...does this mean that the map is open from the start? Or did R* just unlock the map (using their debugging keyboard thingy) so HMV could drive about freely? I'm kinda hoping it's the second one... DAN-1243
They could have just been watching the game with the first few mission completed so the map was unlocked. Interesting though, I personaly think the map will be open from the start like SR.
kipas
In an interview with a dutch site, rockstar said that the map was closed in the beginning.
Sabin8
I think they would have unlocked some parts throughout the map so they get a broader feel of what it looks like. I doubt that they will open the map from the get go, but you never know.
OptimumPx
They showed missions from the start...middle....and ending of the game. So it could have been from a mission towards the middle when you've unlocked that area. We won't really know until the game comes out though. Waddy
GTA wouldnt be GTA if the islands were unlocked from the start. Im sure they will be locked.
Darrel
You never know? But this does not necessarily prove anything. This was a build for the purpose of the preview . They can do whatever they like, so the build they saw could of been half way through the game. Dont know if that made much sence?

Deuce Deuce
Yeah. They almost definitely opened everything up for the sake of the demo, besides Rockstar didn't just want to show off Broker, but other islands as well. It was either a later-in-the-game save or was just debugged to have everything open. Don't worry about it...

JohnnyDrama
As long as they do it in a realistic manner, I think I'd prefer some of the areas locked from the beginning. I'm notorious for snooping, if the game will let me do so. With a locked map, I'll be more focused on one area at a time, saving some exploration for later. Maybe that's just me. mailman07
yeah i hope they do block off areas from the start , but i hope they do it with something we have never seen before. pleaseeeee not construction work againn.
seriouslycrazy
I know it's been done before but i really wouldn't mind if they used the 'ol "bridge closed for construction" excuse, just aslong as they lock the map.

Not exactly. If it was unlocked, it was for demo purpose. But both possibilities are cool for me.

Hold on, that other guy just said that R* confirmed the map is closed. And now you're saying they confirmed that it's open? Do you have any proof? Because the other guy does... memind
i believe you'll only be able to tour broker at first. i don't mind either way, it's just that it's gonna take alot of time to familiarize yourself with the ENTIRE city
