The new aiming system.

Well, since I heard how the new aiming system was going to give you the option of free aiming, and auto targeting, I have been a little uncertain.

I love the idea of free aiming, and I am not to fond of the whole auto targeting.

It just feels, dated to me, like something from last gen...

How will this work online? If they have some sort of Vs. game mode, they certainly can't have auto aiming in the MP.

The two important steps to firing a gun:

1) Aim.

2) Shoot.

Well, if you take aiming out, all you have to do is pull a trigger... Not very realistic if you ask me, and kinda' takes away the feeling of accomplishment when you take down an enemy.

Instead of having to place your sights onto your target, then keep that target in your sights while he is moving/shooting, while controlling gun recoil, all you have to do is push a button.... Fail.

Well, my points are, do we really need both? Isn't it just a waste of button space? Won't auto targeting take away the feeling of accomplishment? Won't this make the game a little too easy?

This is from the 10 page preview from Gameplayer.

Aiming is not down the barrel, but rather via a Halo-sized reticule that can be zoomed in and out of Rainbow Six style. Niko locks onto an enemy’s chest, but once you are locked-on you can free aim about the body, allowing skilled players to pull off headshots or even shoot at weapon carrying limbs.

If this is the case for auto targeting, why even have it at all? Can't we just cut out the middle man and aim at those parts without going through a lock-on?

Or is this just something you can choose once lock-on is initiated, along side free aiming? (Most likely)

Worst case scenario:

This is their idea of using both free aim and auto targeting in some sort of hybrid....

Anyways, what are your guys thoughts on free aiming vs. auto aiming?

I disagree........i think auto aiming is more realistic. think about it, when your gonna shoot someone with a gun in your hand, you will aim pretty close to your target.........unless you are slow or cant aim

What?

unless you are slow or cant aim

Do you understand that, with auto aming, you don't actually aim?

"More realistic," hahahah, FAIL.

Some people are amazingly bad at free aiming at consoles. I know I suck. On FPS, I am pretty good.

I think the lock on aiming is better this time. You have an option of where to shoot, and you can also choose to not kill someone by shooting them in the leg, arm or whatever, to scare them or disable them for a few days lol.

If you can free-aim, then do it, theres no harm in it. Just because you think your good, it doesn't mean everyone else is. It's a basic feature that makes the game fun, and easier for the people who aren't too good at console aiming.

This is sort of a good point. In real life, when you aim, you don't really "focus" on moving up, down, left, and right to aim. If you're going to shoot someone, you just instinctivly aim perfectly. Though I still hate Auto-aim, and thing free-aim should be an 'only'.

If anything, it should just be an option, to make people stop crying about every aspect of the game they dislike.

Hey, thank piece of sh*t console controls for auto-aim. You can't really aim sh*t, especially while driving, with a little stick. Mouse ftw.

Good point.

GTA, for the past 3 installments, has always had auto aiming, people might just be used to/like it.

How about, in the control layout options, you can choose your layout according to your prefered style. That way, all buttons could be used.

This would please me, for my main concern is that the controls aren't going to be nice and tight, becasue they are trying to incorporate two aiming styles into one layout making horrid clunky controls.

Most next-gen games have different control options, so you may be lucky.

Yeah, I think all GTAs have had different layout options in the pause menu.

Or at the beginning of the game, ask the user if they would like to use beginner or advanced controls.

I guess I should have some faith in Rockstar. They have been criticized for clunky controls in the past, they will probly do what they can to change that.

it seems like the aiming will be like the godfather game....which i thought was pretty cool..if u havnt played it, i suggest renting it...it is a good game....you basically lock on but u can move the aimer to anywhere on their body and shoot.

I like the sound of this improved autoaim, sounds like fun, and the best part is its not complicated but it still gives you some options. I really wouldn't want some wierd, tricky high-tech free aim deal that takes you about 3 months of pratice to get right. I'd rather spend my time enjoying the game then get frustrated trying to learn how to shoot somebody. Nevermind the high-tech gizmos, let just get down to business and kill some animated people.

Well its obvious that I overlooked that while typing my initial post....

Ceedot clearly pointed out what I had not thought of, thus helping me with my worries...

Problem solved. By me? No, Ceedot.

Thanks.

Though I still kinda' worry that Rockstar is just going to add both auto and free aiming into the basic control layout, and thus, leading to clunky controls.

Meh I'm ok with either. Some people are just more used with one than the other. I think the auto-aim in this one is going to be great. If you want an idea of how it's going to be go play "Scarface: The World Is Yours", really fun while it lasted.
