geomy
You've talked about picking culturally different neighborhoods. Can you reveal any of the gang cultures apart from the Russians? I can't reveal gangs too much yet, but one of things that appealed to us about a) this character (who isn't actually Russian, he's eastern European, although there will be plenty of Russian gangsters in there) and b) the story and the world, was that New York definitely feels like the world's capital and once you're used to being there, you get ethnic enclaves of all kinds of people, even more than London and certainly more than anywhere else. It's just so many different people still living in their original way. Capturing that variety of behaviour and appearances is something we really spent a lot of time doing. Source. gtathebest4ever
now i know nikos nationality has been discussed in the past but could niko be polish?as seen in kikizo's preview where he shows some of the cut scene coverstaions. the first one is when niko goes to see brucie and one of the workers says "Worker: Yeah, he's around... Brucie! Some f*cking Polak asshole for you!" now this could just be a common misperception of the eastern european accent, but later in the preview when niko is blowing up the mafia with his grenades, kikizo writes in his preview that you can here the enemies screaming back "This Polak is going down" and "C'mon I've got kids, you gotta to let me live!". im just wondering if this is a common misperception or maybe in the begining of the game we find out that niko is of some polish decent. this is probly a bad topic to start but i just wanted to know what other people think? maybe the guy who said that slept through the geography class when he was learning about eastern europe, and he doesn't know the countries there... or should i say here... I agree with ceedot. after work today, i'll skim through some of the older previews and see if I can't find the quote where Houser says he's not Russian. It's in one of the earlier magazine scans, that's why it's so hard to find.
Stefan.
Is anyone actually listening to me? He is not Serbian! The Serbian language has no double letters, yet the name 'Bellic' does! The suffix on the end is Serbian, yet the double letters are not! It contradicts itself! It also cannot make him Croatian because the languages are identical. I think Rockstar made his name like that because they knew that people would be fretting over his nationality, since there is no clear clue as to tell where he is from. They made his name incorrect deliberately.
TheRoper
Boy, you guys get heated over this stuff. It all seems so obvious now that all those countries over there have been at odds with one another for a millennia. Only kidding. Anyway, it's been said, but ignored. The guy in the garage calls Niko a "polak" and Brucie says he's NOT a polak. I don't think it's a derogatory term so it seems pretty straight forward that he's not Polish, I think. Also, as ceedot stated and geomy linked, he's not Russian either. We've known that for a while now. Still up for debate I guess. $$$ MAKE MONEY WITH NEOBUX $$H
joker249
My wife is Russian, originally from Kazakhstan (izvinetya...ya nay punymiya) and she listened to one of the trailers. She thinks he is Balkan, but deffinitely not Russian. The rap song is about a boxer getting ready for a big match, pretty much a metaphor for struggling in life. When she was explaining it to me, I just kept singing LL Cool J in my head (Momma said Knock you out) As for the double L in Bellic, and the fact that R* hasn't mentioned anything, I'm wondering if he is from a "real" country. They make up something in the story line of a Balkan type nation. Heck, Liberty City isn't a real city (except for a part of Savannah)
Azzerwazzer
duh! are you all stupid? he's obviously jamacan... but seriously. the polak thing will be a running joke throuought the game or something. like at the end in the last cutscene it could be like. Last target: (laying on the gound looking up at Niko pointing a shotgun at him) Niko: any last words?... "mon" Last target: F*cking Polak! Gun: BOOM! Last target: slap, sloshhh, pfftt, squelch! yeeeaaaah that'll be it
nlitement
Why don't ignorant assholes listen to us, EVER?! And by us I mean those who actually ARE Slavic, and know something. Seriously, all of you who say "uhmm.. I'm very convinced he's Russian based on a really vague quote from trailer 2. I'm going to ignore whatever the hell people who know what they're talking about say, and all the irrefutable evidence they provide you with, ESPECIALLY Dan Houser explicitly denying my crap." seem to be.. Americans? We know how great you are with geography. But seriously, the point I was trying to make is that you "outsiders" don't even listen to US, "insiders" (yes, nice contrast) http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=308600 Now THAT's a good thread on Niko's nationality. TheRoper
When she was explaining it to me, I just kept singing LL Cool J in my head (Momma said Knock you out) Haha, someone should do a trailer 3 edit to that song! As for the double L in Bellic, and the fact that R* hasn't mentioned anything, I'm wondering if he is from a "real" country. They make up something in the story line of a Balkan type nation. Heck, Liberty City isn't a real city (except for a part of Savannah) Actually, there's a Liberty City in Florida, USA. Regardless, GTA's cities have always been fictional takes on real cities (except London), but they've always been in "America" which is a bit odd really. nlitement, you're an idiot. (edit, this is in regards to your '..blah, blah, america, etc' crap among other things, though you are right about the nationality issue) $$$ MAKE MONEY WITH NEOBUX $$H
Stefan.
I agree with him; being a Serb and looking at this topic, it just makes me think how those that are not Slavic are just stupid about us, and should concentrate on themselves.
circas
yea but when brucie says hes not a polak he also says he's a gentlemen. for example niko could be american and the then the worker say: some asshole redneck. brucie will still say he's not a redneck he's a gentlemen. but idunno froom all this info it does seem highly unlikely he's polish
jynxy
Well im pretty convinced that he's rom the Bolcans. I don't beleive R* ment to ake him a concrete sountry's citizen. Gonna listen to the soundtrack in few months and if there are some bolcan songs it would confirm it... anyways maybe the radio wouldnt't have such stations on second thought.... BOLCAN 90%... I could bet on it.
