Grand Theft Auto renamed?

Californian

Obviously, the game is called "grand theft auto iv," but shouldn't it be called grand theft auto: Liberty City?

I'm just saying since it isn't a sequel from III, and right now it's called IV. Rockstar confirmed it has no connections with the other GTA's (other than in-game brands)

What do you think?

I think I don't get you.

On one hand you say it should be GTA: Liberty City, and on the other you say since its not a sequel of III, it should be called IV.

It's called GTA IV to show that it is a new story and game, otherwise it would confuse and annoy people. Get it?

GTA III was the beginning of the III series, and the rest were called GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas because it was part of the III series, not a whole new game(it used the same engine, stories tied in).

Okay, now i understand Ceedot. My mistake

Hurray! Problem Solved! Yippe-kay-aye motherf***ers tounge.gif

@Californian - Yeah its because its a new trilogy and part of the reason may be because when they first announced it, they didn't want us to know the city, and it fit the mood for a new trilogy.

Good observations, I didn't pick that up, nice work.

I wonder how Rockstar are going to title the next game, because they couldn't just go "Grand Theft Auto: (insert name)". It could cause confusion between the engines from an outsider, or something wrong with trademarks. It might be easy to go "Grand Theft Auto IV: (insert name)" but that isn't really to interesting.

No because I think naming it IV is much better than naming a city IMO.

I think it will still be named after the cities they are in, although they could do it the way you said it.

Well what I meant by "insert name" I meant the name of the city, like what has been tossed around earlier, and what you said. I've just been expanding on it.

Yeah Ceedot made it pretty clear.

GTA IV is a sequal to GTA 1, 2, and 3, but's it's a loose sequal. E.g Butterfly Effect 2 has no relation to Butterfly effect 1, but is still technically a sequal.

At first I got confused with Vice City, and SA being set before GTA III, and wondered why GTA III wasn't called GTA: Liberty City.

They probably didn't have a master plan to create a "GTA3 series". Rather, they created such a powerful engine for GTA3 they were able to keep expanding and wring several games out of it before it was obsolete. It was brilliant having all those spinoffs be set in the past because the retro ambiance made the aging graphics technology seem stylish.

As others have explained, GTA4 is chronologically and technologically the first sequel moving forward from GTA3.

It IS the sequel to III, m8 tounge.gif

III, VC, SA = GTA3. IV is the next game.

Actually... Before SA ever came out, R* said we'd get modding tools to make our

own mods in "the next gta game"... Didn't deliver... or have they? This is the

true sequel, so maybe, this is the next game...

Nah, they wanted to do GTA1 in 3D, and they did, they just did it in three discs. Makes sense.

LUCK FOR A BUCK!!!!! f*ck Yea!

It's way too late for them to be changing the name now. Not only that, as it's already been explained, the roman numeral usually denotes the beginning of a new GTA generation.

Besides, we already have GTA Liberty City Stories. It would be very confusing to the casual gamer to notice a difference between that and GTA Liberty City at a glance. From a logical marketing standpoint, GTA IV is the only way to go.
