Lost-Fender
I have been using this computer for quite some time, it has been running well but recently these days I have noticed that my quantity of free hard disk space has been steadily decreasing. It wasn't a problem at first because I started to clean up the disk, delete files, uninstalling programs, etc. but oddly enough the free space on my HD just keeps decreasing. It simply goes from 86.1 GB of free space to a 80.0 GB of free space on 30 minutes or so. I ran Spybot to see if there was any adware program causing the problem. It deleted a few programs but the problem went on. My anti-virus (McAfee VirusScan) is enabled and is continuously scanning the system, it should have detected any virus by now. Even weirder (before anyone says "stop downloading pr0n!" ) is the fact that the problem is still there even when the computer is not connected to the interwebs. At the moment it seems to have stopped. Has anyone experienced this before? What do you think the problem might be? More importantly, how can I get back all the hard disk space consumed these recent days? mystk
Maybe you have some programme running in the background that's doing something that's consuming disk space? EmSixTeen
Have you checked the Recycle Bin? System Restore? Google Desktop Search? All of these eat up more and more space by default. Otter
It could also be the pagefile. What are your virtual memory settings? Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/307905-hard-disk-space-continously-decreasing/#findComment-1057422395 Share on other sites
Lost-Fender
@Warlord. I uninstalled various programs, so I was left only with those indispensable programs (anti-virus, Firefox, etc) and various games. I also checked with Task Manager and there seems to be no such program running. @Em I regularly empty the Recycle Bin to keep the computer clean, and I don't have Google Desktop Manager. I still have to check System Restore though. @Otter Checking the settings, the total paging file size for all drives is 2345MB. "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is ticked. Skyline_Mad
I had a problem exactly the same as this a while ago, i was loosing disc space at an alarming rate, to the point where it kept saying my HDD space is low in one of those windows notification thingys. It took me ages to find out what it was, i had to monitor each folder in the HDD thats was decreasing (had multiple partitions). I found out it was Limewire, but when i went in the folder nothing was there, i even went into the folder options to show all files, but it still didnt show up, after a while i went into the Limewire library and found an unmarked folder (one i couldn't see at all in Windows browser), then i noticed it had 1000s of very small exe files, each one had a different name, the files were mini versions of programs/games that couldnt be opened (name a random game or program and i bet it was there) e.g. gta_sa.exe. I managed to delete all the files, but the next day i noticed it started downloading them again , i had to uninstall Limewire for it to stop. Strange thing is though it didnt need Limewire to be running, must have been some sort of spyware i had cought while downloading a song. After i reformatted a while later i downloaded the later version of Limewire and havn't had that problem since, but i hardly ever use it anymore, i usualy purchase my music from iTunes. So if your using Limewire, check all associated folders to see if thats where the file space is enlarging, if it is uninstall and delete everything to do with it, thats all i can suggest. Otter
Well, that pagefile would only account for 2 gigs. Have you done a good defrag lately? Get Voptxp for the free trial - it's really fast. mystk
You know, I think it could actually be System Restore like Em said, since I think it increases the amount of space used the longer you use the PC (not sure, but I think it has to take a 'snapshot'). Try turning off the System Restore. And also try a defrag like Otter said, I'd recommend AusLogics Disk Defrag, it's free and it's REALLY fast because you can set the priority, excellent programme. Or you could use DirMS-S, this is equally fast, but also has a 'Compact' feature. Lost-Fender
@Skyline_Mad: I know what you mean, the same happened to me on my old computer. LimeWire was really eating away my hard drive, and when that computer got a brand new anti-virus, it detected at least 26,000+ of these little "applications" which happened to be viruses. I remember making a topic about it. I didn't install LimeWire on this computer, though, because it really isn't necessary, and there better ways to download music out there. @Warlord, Em: It seems that was the problem, I turned off System Restore and cleaned up 20GB from my hard drive. The amount of free space on hard disk isn't decreasing anymore. Problem solved. Thanks you two. I downloaded VoptXP as well, it is now defragmenting my HDD, to clean up additional space. Ring_of_Fire
I think the problem is definitely your Temporary Internet Files. They hold a lot, and using the Internet like everyday makes this obvious as to why your free space is decreasing. I recommend CCleaner and Windows XP/Vista's Disk Cleanup utility. This will give you a LOT of free space! EmSixTeen
I think the problem is definitely your Temporary Internet Files. They hold a lot, and using the Internet like everyday makes this obvious as to why your free space is decreasing. I've tried to stave off this attitude towards you, but it's finally become an annoyance.. In every single post you make, you sound like 'that guy' that everyone knows who thinks they know things about PCs, but in reality knows very little yet still tries to give out 'expert' advice. I recommend CCleaner and Windows XP/Vista's Disk Cleanup utility. This will give you a LOT of free space! Personally, CCleaner has rarely (ie, never) gotten rid of anything for me that I haven't specifically looked for and removed, whilst the Disk Cleanup utility is pointless if you know anything at all about the things it does (such as, err, emptying your Recycle Bin). Do not proclaim that it will free up 'a LOT' of free space.. Also, try reading the post above your last one - You'll see that the problem was already solved (thanks to a suggestion from myself and follow-up from Warlord). You're just a guy that likes to harass my posts, that's all, even if it actually helps the thread starter and then he/she saids the problem was solved by Ring_of_Fire. And why don't you try harassing my glitch posts in the San Andreas and Vice City forums. You think you can beat me in MTAVC/VCMP? I will kick your ass and I even beated [KFJ]Bautista and [sS]Nutter. And I bet you suck at tricking and glitching in video games, if you say I suck at computers. I've tried to stave off this attitude towards you, but it's finally become an annoyance.. In every single post you make, you sound like 'that guy' that everyone knows who thinks they know things about PCs, but in reality knows very little yet still tries to give out 'expert' advice. This is totally off-topic to my "Temporary Internet Files" advice. I bet you haven't even check how much free space deleting the temp files can actually save. Plus, those files are always building up on your hard drive. CCleaner does empty a lot of content from your hard drive. The thread starter said that his free space was decreasing and since CCleaner already knows all the things that the user can delete in order to increase the free space, it should be a good recommendation. (And I am actually surprised you literally said CCleaner was a crappy utility. Look how popular the damn program is.) System Restore? Google Desktop Search? The combination of Disk Cleanup and CCleaner can clean all that shi t already. Have you checked the Recycle Bin? I don't see how the Recycle Bin eats/decreases free space considering it supposed to increase it. The person here complains that his hard drive space is decreasing and why the Recycle Bin in the first place would have something to do with it? Here's my Youtube profile, EmSixTeen. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=TI2ophy If you want me to be Mr. Nice Guy, please don't ever harass my advice. I can assume the next time I post here with advice you think is good, you'd still post random crap at me. Brutuz
Snip. First of all, how good you are at video games =/= how good you are at computers, I sucked at SA when I first got it, but I still knew loads about computers (enough to make my own computer) and I was still able to do all my stuff like overclocking, etc. And the stuff you've said in every topic, is all stuff thats not really going to work, like when you said to someone with a failing CMOS Battery to reload defaults, I've never seen a time when I've had to use that because it kept reloading the Defaults. All my games work. I am running COD4, Vice City, San Andreas, etc. without problems. As for video games, see my Youtube profile... And the stuff you've said in every topic, is all stuff thats not really going to work, like when you said to someone with a failing CMOS Battery to reload defaults, I've never seen a time when I've had to use that because it kept reloading the Defaults.[/color] That advice was actually good. I saw it recommended at a forum and many others. If the Battery wasn't damaged, then that should be a good recommendation. And the stuff you've said in every topic, is all stuff thats not really going to work, Who endiing up fixing the thread starter's problem, Saget herself! I gave up the best advice before everyone went and said it was a battery problem instantly. And you have to only look at the posts I did "crap" in. Do you know of any good onces? And notice when I post around here, it's either me who fixes the problem or it's when the thread starter gives up or fixes it by himself. lol The only time when you guys actually fix it is when I am not around, since the best advice would have not been taken away by me and only me! Brutuz
Snip. You know, if I could really be bothered I could probably find a heap of problems you didn't fix, and as I said, I've never heard of a CMOS constantly getting reset due to the defaults needing to be loaded, except with overclocking, which I know Saget doesn't do, and she did think that it could be that, we just confirmed it for her. And I'm not posting in this topic again after this. EmSixTeen
Talk about delusions of grandeur! It's alright, I can one up him (and then some). Ring_of_Fire.. You want to talk gaming now? Okay.. I was in Team Technique Racing, the world's best racing team in Xbox Live. I was voted 9th best overall player in the world in Project Gotham Racing 2 thanks to the Xbox.com forums, won 2 tournaments, and still to this day have dozens of top 3 ghosts. Before Forza's scoreboards were reset, I was once again 9th in the world for the Time Attack. I was top 50 in PGR3, and unfortunately have not played PGR4 competitively yet but am hoping to with the aide of GAMETHEWORLD, and perhaps try for the CGS. I have been Gamer of the Month for Official Xbox Magazine, and featured on their discs three times. I was 97th in the world for Unreal championship at a point, too. I play high+ CoD2, and have played alongside teams suchs as Dignitas, Reason Gaming, Serious-Gaming, The Last Resort, etc. Writing this sh*tty post is also making me late from where I should be - Down training with my team for a £1000 CoD2 LAN league (at the aforementioned GTW) for which our first live match is next Wednesday. I also play Quake 3, and whilst my skills in this are nowhere near along the lines of amazingly insane players like Vo0, I still manage to hold my own to be able to play with players like him.. Which I'm proud of, to say the least. As for tricking, err, I recorded this just for you. This is just one of the games I play, remember. You think you're pro at VC-MP? Err, okay. Come back to me when you've done something of note. Ring_of_Fire
You think you're pro at VC-MP? Next time I gonna use FRAPS to record VCMP. I play in the Grand Larceny [GL] or the Superior Skills [sS] Deathmatch server. Meet me there! I am gonna record while playing too. Ring_of_Fire.. You want to talk gaming now? Okay.. EmSixTeen
Well played, kid.. That would all be great if MTA or VC-MP actually required any skill whatsoever. Seems like you're taking pride in being in a clan in a non-competitive game against people with no recognition, and that this means you're skilled? Play me at a game that's not the utter bore, then I'll take you seriously. It's amazing how you managed to just stroll right past and ignore everything I said. Seems like you're taking pride in being in a clan in a non-competitive game against people with no recognition, and that this means you're skilled? Are you sure you play MTAVC? Because you of course aren't allowed to use an M60/Spazzer and act like a noob. And these game requires skill such as movement, jumping, dodging and aiming. You will need to play in order to find out if skill is actually required. There are some videos on Youtube of how hard it is. SAMP/MTASA Deathmatch sucks though and that's when no skill is actually required. Oh, GTA3 requires skill because of the similar fighting styles. I can't show you any screenshots and movies since I am not beside my computer. Play me at a game that's not the utter bore, then I'll take you seriously. It's amazing how you managed to just stroll right past and ignore everything I said. Come on. My advices weren't bad. It should be equally good. And did you notice we have yet to fix the thread starter's problem? It's "Hard drive continuously decreasing", and not "How to free hard drive space". Even a question like "How to stop hard drive from continuosly decreasing" would be considered impossible. You only can suggest on tips to free up and save hard drive space. Anyway, that's about it for this thread - a mod can close this.
