Awesome. Not this emo/br00tal scene kid bullsh*t, just straight up slam dancing, you just cant beat it.

Anyway. I like street punk, and for the past few months i've been listening to alot of Cheap Sex & The Virus (I prefer The virus with Mike on vocals). Does anyone else like these?

Can anyone recommend any good, American Street Punk bands? (note: I am not too fond of The Casualties).

Anyway, my favourite song by The Virus

I dont know why but I love Mike Virus' vocals even though they probabally could get on other peoples nerves ever so easily.

As for English Street Punk, how about a bit of One Way System?

For the record, When I got GTA4, I was more into the jazz and newage channels and SOME of the LCR radio, but not so much burning myself out on LC HC.

A few were upset with Jimmy G. and the channel changing over with Max C and Death Metal for the DLC, But in my opinion, both are highly enjoyable in their own right, given they can feel small in scope, I can concur with the feeling they should have seperate stations, but they would have had to revise both, and it's probably too much expense and work.

As far as real Punk, I recently looked up some early Black Flag. My eldest sister went into a heavy punk phase, though she didn't try and LOOK the part, she had a punk t shirt with all the band logos drawn up on it! haha Black Flag was promonent among them. I somehow heard that band or another and the sonic noise was too much for my sensibilities. Even in the mid to late 80s, Death Metal was a new fangled thing and that style of vocals, Napalm Death, one of the forerunners, Kreator, Sodom... I didn't get into that style right away, but I was already digging on Ozzy, Def Leppard, British Metal bands in the late 70s.

I think the Ramones really made a major impact as well, Motorhead on the other side of the fense, in making crossover possible.

Same could be said of The Police, in their earliest formation, they were essentially punk.

D.R.I. is still well respected among fans of both.

Jello Biafra was doing a recorded monologue on The Root of All EVil radio show, he was talking about a gridlock issue he was facing one day, then the tape ended... This out in Cali of course, I never got to hear how that story ended, the tape ran out on the last side.

Anyone familiar enough to nail that down?!

If anyone really inspired crossover, Id say it was Discharge, one of the first Punk bands to actually blend Metal & Punk.

Listen to this Slammy.

I actually hate what they did with LCHC in GTA IV. Death Metal isn't hardcore, so why they were put onto a Hardcore station is beyond me. The theme was great at first, New York hardcore, I loved Jimmy G aswell.

Thought I'd bump this thread and post a few of my favorites:

"Alcohol" by Gang Green

"Old Time Hardcore" by Slapshot

"No Class" by Reagan Youth

I tried to find "Step On It"(the song not the album) by Slapshot on youtube as it's one of my all time favorites, but they didn't have it. I had like two CD's of songs like the ones I posted, if I find them I'll post some more, but I can't remember the names of the bands right now. Anyone ever watched a Choppahead DVD here? They build homemade Triumph choppers and their DVD's contain a lot of hardcore/punk. Keep it goin' guys!

I looked up some Slapshot as well, I noted there was actually a song by another band on MTV couple years back, seemed they used that and it was sticking in my memory. Not sure how to look it up though. Could be I'm thinking of Filter with "Nice Shot, Man"?

I posted Where Eagles Dare by Misfits before, that's a classic in-your-face anthem.

I do think Danzig could be good if he mixed more of the Misfits formula in with what he does as a solo band-artist.

For me, LCHC with death metal works on it's own accord, it just seems too short, in some respects I'm burned out on that particular KREATOR, being one of their longer songs, it gets cutoff before it ends. STill heavy as Hell though

Omnia sunt Communia

I haven't posted in this topic for a while!

I've returned to my parent's house for the holiday period and as such, have access to the internet! Bristol is full of punk gigs, with one going on almost every other week. I went to Manchester on Sunday to see Oi Polloi with support from Inner Terrestrials, Autonomads, I.C.H., Poundaflesh, Global Parasite, Harijan, Dead Subverts and War Coma (though I only got to see the last three bands).

Probably one of the best gigs I've been to in a while. The Manchester Punx are f*cking insane!

Here is a list of some of the bands I've discovered over the last month or two:

  • Surfin' Turnips
  • Anarcho Folko
  • Jesus Bruiser
  • Ratface
  • Molly Sampson
  • Tracey Curtis
  • Refuse/All
  • Spanner
  • Distortion UK
  • As We Sink!
  • Resolution 242
  • The Extinguishers
Most of them are local Bristol bands, though some are from all over the shop (since Bristol gets quite a lot of out of towners playing). Make sure you check them out!

Man I just listen to classic punk. These new bands just don't have style like the old stuff. I listen to these cd's over and over and they just don't get old for me cause they're so good.

Alcohol by Gang Green is actually on their "crossover" album Another Wasted Night, which sounds nothing like previous Gang Green stuff, and in my opinion that album is f*cking terrible, you should check out the comp This is Boston Not LA for pre-crossover Gang Green.

I personally think that LCHC was a huge disappointment, and did nothing but degrade the original, and whats left of the current HC scene up in the Northern areas of the US out of all the songs on the channel only two are from what I like to call "First Wave" HC (1978-1985) after that there's the Cro-Mags, and Murphy's Law, Cro-Mags first album was published in '85 but you can clearly hear the crossover sound, rather than 73 second NYHC.

@Slamman: As for DRI I don't know a single person (in Texas at least) that likes new DRI if they listen to HC DRI (and vice versa) They have a huge impact in the Newcore scene here (see Die Young) I myself don't like crossover DRI, or any original HC that went crossover/thrash; because for some reason they always get the idea that taking their original work that they're know for, and crossing it will make it sound good. DRI played in Houston not too long ago; of course they did the whole Were back in our original town sh*t; anyway here you can listen for yourself the difference.

I like Rancid. So am I cool?

People don't judge how cool somebody is based on a band they like, I like Rancid, well, I only like their first three albums, never cared for anything after "...And out come the wolves".

The line up for Rebellion Festival 2010 is shaping up to be decent.

Is anyone else going to the Rebellion this year? I presume Jacky Fiend is as he was there last August, but what about everyone else? Lots of Europeans & Asians go and I have met several Americans and Canadians there.

Definately gonna see The Skints again, they're an awesome Reggae Punk band.

I'll be going to Rebellion. Most of my friends are going to enDorset in Dorset instead to see Inner Terrestrials and Autonomads, but I've seen both bands before and would rather see bands like 7 Seconds at Rebellion (plus it'll be the one year anniversary of meeting my girlfriend, so would be nice for us to be there together). Not too mention the fact that it'll be another chance to see the Manchester Punx.

I saw Skints a couple of weeks ago here in Bristol. I didn't think much of them, mostly because I was so wasted I could hardly hear anything they were playing. I listened to them on CD recently though and found out I really liked them. Looking forward to seeing them again.

I'm on my way to Manchester again soon (21st February) to see The Zounds w/ Autonomads at The Star & Garter. Booked my Megabus tickets in advance so it's only going to cost me about £15 to get there, see the bands, and get back. Going to be a good night.

I also bought a book from the infoshop at our local anarchist social centre: The Day The Country Died: A History of Anarcho-Punk 1980-1984. It's a pretty interesting oral history of the early anarcho-punk movement with original interviews and a lot of bands (including some smaller, lesser known bands). Defiantly recommend it to anyone interested in anarcho-punk.

Probabally see you there mate, if all goes to plan anyway, some girl has invited me as she loves The Zounds and doesen't know anyone, haha.

You need to come along to the Ska Bar, next one is on Sunday 31st January at Retro Bar, The Fractions are playing and they're brilliant.

EDIT: You mentioned 7Seconds, I am f*cking over the moon that they have been put on the Rebellion line up.

D.R.I. is who they are, I admire past and present with the band, to be honest about it.

Punk seemed abrasive as noisy, unpleasent to my "virgin" ears, but Metal in particular is pretty tight musically, based much on Sabbath and Hard Rock, which is really musical harmony wise. However, even The Sex Pistols weren't without musicality one finds when they delve further.

I dug out Cro-Mags recently, their site has updates on the band, as it stands, not likely to play as they once did due to a major falling out, however, the spirit lives on, the fans keep them alive, and they do appeal to a large audience. Check out their web site and the photos put up over there. Perris took up directing music videos and Steady Cam work while running into people established in Hollywood, which seems an odd combination, but it's all there on their site.

Another band that felt semi-punk is CoC, Corrosion of Conformity. In their case I prefer the raw 80s style, early 1990s. Pepper took the band in a more mainstream way, and some might blame his friendship with Lars Ulrich because that seemed to coincide with the new songs when they were seen hanging out and chatting one another up in interviews

Does anyone like Toxic Narcotic? I just listened to a song by them called "Asshole", it was a live version, holy sh*t I was blown away, not really delved into much Crust, but i'll be definately looking into this band.

Can anyone recommend any similar bands?

ASSHOLE! ASSHOLE! Love it.

Gang Green is a punk outfit? On the Root of All Evil radio show, punk music used to get more airplay when Earl Root hosted the show, and some local venues mixed punk and metal, which was all good. I got to see the Misfits live as they opened for a metal band in a big venue!

Will be good to see you again. It's been a while! I plan on staying in Manchester from the 20th to the 22nd, so if you're about at all between those dates, I don't see why we can't do something (as long as you don't mind my girlfriend tagging along).

Zounds are one of my favourite bands. I saw Steve Lake at Rebellion, and he was brilliant. It didn't matter that it was only him and an electric guitar: He captured the feel and energy of the songs perfectly. I'm assuming that it's just going to be him again, which is still good by my books!

I'll be busy getting wasted in Bristol on the 31st. It's my birthday on the 27th. I'll be 20 years-old. I've got mates coming down from Manchester, so a right ol' piss up is in order!

I'm seeing Jay Terrestrial & Chezney on the 22nd of January then Inner Terrestrials and Autonomads on the 23rd. Is going to be a good weekend, as far as I'm concerned.

27th sees the annual "Punk Nite" at my local venue (where I'm from, not where I live). Get to see Charred Hearts again along with a few others bands who I've since forgotten. Seems like a good way as ajny other to spend my 20th birthday!

Friend of mine has also organized a brilliant gig for the beginning of February as well. I'm swamped for gigs at the moment.

Maybe, are you gonna be squatting? My mate lives in 116, he's the front man for The John Player Specials. Awesome band.

Ok its time to listen to some 3CR and 7 Seconds, both good bands who will be at Rebellion! I best not get too excited for Rebellion, I'm planning on going to Kippertronix (Ska festival), and Strummer camp this year, as well as some "big bands" like Dropkick Murphys, as they're a brilliant live band.

Speaking of Rebellion, im getting my ticket within the next two weeks or so then I need to find a cheap B&B near the Winter Gardens, then its just a case of saving beer money.

I'm not sure where I'll be staying yet. I know I'm staying with my friend on the first night, though I'll probably end up staying at one of the squats after the gig. Going home pretty early on the 22nd, I think.
