How about all the punk-ish songs on Ronald Reagan?

Who was it penned "Old Mother Reagan"? MojoNixon??

Anywho, I read on Wiki and some other blogs, etc., the fine history of THE MENTORS.

I always accepted that they were making a point to be funny, they ran afoul of those who take ALL music seriously, which is a bad move anyway.

The Mentors took actual influence from Jimi Hendrix and other 60s artists, and formed in the latter half of the 1970s. They were not prolific but it is said they were Proto-punk as well as the ORIGINAL Cross-Over artist of genres.

The hat comes off... However, people may feel without El Duce, the band has little relevance. I don't

I've seen them live twice, and I read on Wiki they're actively getting a new album ready for release this year!!

Just re-discovered the first album which i ever got when i was like Six/seven, Americana by the offspring. I remember swinging on the swings in kinder garden with my mate singing all the lyrics to "Why don't you get a job?" without getting a single word right, must of been a laugh for anyone who heard us tounge.gif

Anyway, here's one of my favorite tracks of it:

Funny you should say that, Americana was the first CD I ever bought back when I was 9 or so. I've still got that CD too, and I know every word to each song on there. I can remember sneaking a CD player out to recess in elementary school and sitting behind the playground listening to Pretty Fly and Why Don't You Get a Job.

1998, the year i lost my virginity Got my first Album inlove.gif

@Assreamer: Haha, f*cking awesome. I never quite liked "The kids aren't alright" as a kid which seems to become some sort of a classic now in retrospective, i preferred "Have you ever", "Staring at the sun", "The end of the line" & "Americana" of that album.

Now that we're talking about American punk, i just started venturing a little bit deeper into American Oi! after strictly listening to The Templars (which is an epic band i must say) and I've started listening to The Bruisers who's singer now sings for DKM (which you probably all knew but I'm a newb at American punk so whatever).

Here's My favorite track so far:

Sounds very Blitz/Skrewdriver/the Templars to me. They've also done a great "Nation on Fire" cover wich is my favorite blitz song smile.gif

Awesome thread... thanks to Jacky Fiend for having it in his sig.

Anyways, I'm not going to pretend for a second that I read this whole thing, but I thought I might join in and share some thoughts... this whole thread brings me back, I honestly kinda gave up on punk awhile ago (whether it's dead or not is personal opinion), but when I was a teenager I had the mohawk, studded denim vest and all that sh*t. I've always loved all the stuff from the late 70s... Dead Boys, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Johnny Thunders, Voidoids, Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers and of course, my all time favorite band The Clash. As far as the 80s stuff goes I could never get huge into it, I mean I like the Dead Kennedys, Exploited, Bad Brains, and Black Flag, but I'll take the 70s stuff over it any day. 90s I'm a little keener on just because that's when I was a kid and as some of the rest of you have mentioned Greenday, the Offspring are like childhood heroes for me. As I got older I got into all of the 70s ones I mentioned above as well as Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Op Ivy, Chocking Victim/Leftover Crack, Psychobilly, ska, etc. Eventually though it all seemed to split in two directions the really really poppy sh*t like Blink 182 and Sum 41, which I couldn't stand and all the screaming/hardcore/crusty/vegan/black metal/etc sh*t (that most of my punk buddies got into) which I couldn't stand either. I always liked the 70s punk bands (which is what I really define "punk" by) because they sung about all kinds of whatever they wanted to while still being really catchy and fun, it was raw and nasty while still being in fact poppy (in a good way, like 50's and 60's rock'n'roll/motown poppy... not Pussycat Dolls poppy). The new bands just seem to be screaming and trying to sound as offensive as possible or trying to sound as catchy and poppy (this time Pussycat Dolls poppy) as possible. Meanwhile Greenday makes mediocre rock operas and Rancid soldiers on but just sounds like they're running out of steam on the last 3 albums.

So true, Mafioso, so true. I use to be really into the seventies bands a few years back but I started branching out and really got into horror punk (through The Misfits); I went through a period of only listenening to horror punk. Though now I listen to mostly anarcho and/or crust punk though I still listen to a bit of everything from the world of punk. I think it's awfully limiting to just listen to one genre of punk because it's such a wide and varied genre. You've got everything from the dirty, smelly sounds of crust punk to the futuristic and sometimes violent sounding digital hardcore. What more could you ask for?

....

[youtubed removed]

Not for me, OK however, just grates on me after a time. I know this because I got a used MD with the album on it, and I recorded over it (left some intact!) ha

Anyway, Punk is interesting in the way it intertwined with Heavy Metal, the two share some basic similarities.

Vary Garage-Street ethic and sometimes just going for sonic barrage. Some of the high-polish you hear today is still very much radio friendly. You have to dig REAL deep, many local outfits are small time not because they are poor musicians, but LITERALLY poor. The ethic is you don't need to spend $5000 in the studio on a recording.

One of the best examples I heard is kids having fun with music, and it never comes off as professional. The example I tend to think is one of the coolest...perhaps best bands of their ilk...

Local Legends "Sword Killer"

I plan to upload them to my YT channel within the context of Earl Root's Root of all Evil. The tapes are archived very late 1980s in time frame, so who knows where these youngsters are now, but If they did re-form, you can't capture what they committed to tape again! .... Look for that audio clip (with vid from the 4th I shot) on the ole YouTube.

My experience with punk has been not just metal radio crossover but mixed bills of bands playing live.

Even MetalFest had some with the 90 odd bands over two days. Of course, you may see that less likely with OzzFest for example. There was a good vibe on our scene back in the day, and people dressed the classic part of punk but you had leather and jeans for Metalheads as well...all mixin it up in the PIT!!

Been listening to some Charles Bronson lately, bummer these dudes broke up. 90's punk/violence you could file them under, if you're into that sh*t.

i herd u guys like blink 182 and stuff )))

I dont mind some Blink 182 songs if Im honest, but as far as Punk goes, I'd give them a no.

@ Slamman: You must admit, Metal does owe a lot to punk, the influence Punk had on the genre was massive.

Sales of heavy metal records declined sharply in the late 1970s in the face of punk, disco, and more mainstream rock. With the major labels fixated on punk, many newer British heavy metal bands were inspired by the movement's aggressive, high-energy sound and "lo-fi", do it yourself ethos. Underground metal bands began putting out cheaply recorded releases independently to small, devoted audiences.

lol, just watching an old live video of Suspect device, look at the punk slap the steward in the face @ 1:52.

woot, page 60!

Hard to say that punk bred metal due to the historic time line, but I feel the root of the music or the core is much the same ATOM. These guys, WarZone I heard about because of Earl Root's show, they even did a station ID he would broadcast between songs, they still do famous artist IDs for the show, however, the artists are typically VERY FREAKIN heavy metal acts, not Ozzy or Lars. <G>

Heavy Metal may have been around a lot longer than Punk Rock, granted, but you've got to admit that modern Heavy Metal owes a lot to Punk. I don't think we'd have Thrash (the godfather of modern metal) if it wasn't for Punk. You cannot deny the influence both genres had on eachother. Punk influenced Thrash, and in turn Thrash influenced Punk. Without Thrash metal we wouldn't have genres like UK82, Crossover Thrash, Crust, D-Beat, Digital Hardcore and various others.

A lot of US hardcore bands (especially on the east coast) were influenced by Heavy Metal.

Thats a pretty cool song there Bill, never heard of them myself, better listen to some more.

I need to get tickets for The Specials, they are playing in Liverpool soon, how awesome.

And yeah, Punk did more or less changem music indefinately, you wouldn't have thrash, death metal and Nu metal if it weren't for Punk.

Glad to see a multitude of punks on here tounge.gif

Nothing beats classic 80's D.C. punk for me. Fugazi, Happy Go Licky, Egg Hunt, Embrace, Jets to Brazil...I still listen to that stuff all the time.

that being said, I do enjoy some...

Citizen Fish

Leftover Crack/Choking Victim

Operation Ivy

MDC (my band actually opened for them once)

Bad Brains

Modern Life is War

Black 47

to name a few....

Punk is what I was raised on man. When my band finishes our album (shouldn't take but a few months), I'll post some stuff on here.

Nice to see yet another punk rocker on here, NawlinsIrish. Those are some pretty good bands you posted, not so much into the Fugazi-era stuff but I do like Citizen Fish (they are a local band) and Leftover Crack. Good choices!

Cool man, have you ever seen them live (Citizen Fish). I was supposed to see them back when them and LC had that split EP, but, as always, sh*t came up. sad.gif

How is the English punk scene these days? I'm afraid I'm horribly uneducated as far as modern English punk goes.

Not yet, sadly. They live a little too far to travel to their "local" gigs (playing at friend's birthdays etc.) and their major gigs are always in the cities. I did manage to see Subhumans (Dick's other band) last year. I will be seeing both of them (along with LoC) at Rebellion Festival.

Not bad, not bad. We've got Rebellion Festival coming up, which is like the largest punk festival in Europe. 186 acts planned for this year. Let's just hope they all turn up (you know what those punks are like)! It's going to be 4 days of drink, punk and (hopefully) getting laid. lol.gif

I love the Subhumans! I've been listening to The Day the Country Died for a few weeks now in my car lol.gif

Rebellion Festival sounds great though, I wish we had something like that here in the Southern U.S. sad.gif I'm afraid most bands I hear around here are COC/Agnostic Front rip-offs though......

Fugazi, Egg Hunt, Embrace, Happy Go Licky, and Jets to Brazil are all post-hardcore bands. And all of them except for Jets to Brazil were either on Dischord, or Ian Mackaye had something to do with the band.

There are other hardcore bands that came out of the DC/upper North area that isn't Minor Threat, such as SS Decontrol, Bad Brains, S.O.A, DYS, The F.U's, Gang Green, and The Freeze.

What's wrong with post-hardcore? whatsthat.gif Granted I don't listen to much (or any) of it. Granted I do love Gang Green, Bad Brains, The Freeze and SS Decontrol though (I think you're the one who introdced me to the last one).

Nice list Jake, this is who I'm seeing:

Thursday

  • Dead Subverts
  • Koffin Kats
  • Police Bastard
  • The Varukers
Friday
  • Sick On The Bus
  • Star F*cking Hipsters
  • Steve Lake
  • Subhumans
  • Peter & The Test Tube Babies
  • The Adolescents
  • Bad Shephers/The Damned
Saturday
  • Citizen Fish
  • Goldblade
  • 999
  • Newtown Neurotics
  • Stza Crack
  • Amebix
  • UK Subs
  • The Adicts
Sunday
  • Charred Hearts
  • King Blues
  • The Dickies
  • Voodoo Glow Skulls/Killing Joke
  • Leftover Crack
I'm pretty sure I've posted that list before, but I'm so excited I thought I'd post it again. lol.gif Also, on the night before Rebellion starts, I'll be going to a warm-up gig at the West Coast Rock Cafe. The line-up for that gig is:
  • The Cute Lepers
  • Catch-it Kebabs
  • The Autonomads
  • Dead Subverts
  • Harijan
  • The Kirkz
  • The Hijacks
  • Broken Nose
  • Ponse
Only heard of two of those bands before. Dead Subverts are the band I'm going up with (and a local band) and Autonomads are a pretty class band my mate introduced me too from Manchester. Overall should be a fairly good night. Shame I didn't book my hotel room a night earlier. Means I have to sleep in my mate's car Wednesday night. lol.gif

Some of you might not agree with this being posted here, but f*ck it. They released a good 4 or 5 albums of punk rock.

Is anyone else in this thread an AFI fan? AFI is by far and away my favorite band. Recently I've been hooked on the Art of Drowning and Black Sails in the Sunset albums.

I enjoy a few of their songs from their earlier albums (namely "Answer That and Stay Fashionable" and "Very Proud of Ya"); "I Wanna Mohawk (But Mom wont let me get one)" and "Cereal Wars" are great songs. Also love their "All Hallow's E.P." and "Art of Drowning". You would never imagine that the same band that brought us "Miss Murder" and Davey Havok's fringe could bring us some great hardcore tracks like that.

Only four days till I leave for Rebellion. I'm really psyched. I cannot wait.

I downloaded a Crass covers album yesterday. If I'm honest - it was sh*t. There was a pretty good cover of "Big A, litte a" by a band called M.D.M but other than that it was utter rubbish. I didn't know you could even could do a dance cover of "Securicor". dontgetit.gif Don't even get me started than their cover of "Darling" (Versus Andy T.). Bleh.

Yeah I used to like AFI a lot back in the day... as Jacky said All Hallows EP and Art of Drowning were great. I can even do Sing the Sorrow and the newer stuff when in the right mood, though I dunno if I would truly call it "Punk Rawk."

Nice to see that some of you guys don't like Fugazi lol. Not to bash on them, I don't "hate" them... but I feel like I'm the only person I know that doesn't like absolutely love them, I just could personally never get into it. That all said I do live in the DC area so that might have something to do with why all my friends are so nuts for them.

Anyways on Metal and Punk... as you guys said thrash owes a lot to it and all of the guys I've met that are big into thrash are almost always also big Ramones and Misfits fans. I'm not a metalhead in the least... I love Black Sabbath and Alica Cooper (if he counts as metal) and I think Motorhead are cool, but beyond that, yeah... i don't know sh*t. Anyways, Ramones give some common ground, which is a cool thing.

that's just what Stza Crack does. Like how Lee Ving and the rest from FEAR would talk sh*t to the crowd to get them pissed off before they started playing. Insinuation is the best.

I like King Blues. They take a soft spin on punk, with more melodic lyrics and small bits of ska thrown into the mix. I would recommend listening to them for whoever hasn't.
