I already found some music I like. I'm downloading it right now. That Dead Kennedy's song is great (:

way to give back to the already dead music genre. angry.gif

I've found myself listening to NoFX recently, they're the only decent pop-punk band. I absolutely detest Green day, please dont get me atarted on them.

I really can't stand people who make statements like that, have you even bothered to listen to Dookie before? Completely tears apart NOFX's War on Errorism.

That's just an example, but if you feel the need to show off how cool and punk rock you are by badmouthing a band whos musical direction has changed in the past few years, but still has good albums/songs then do so somewhere else.

Punk songs have mad solo's?

The only actual punk song I know with an guitar solo is The Buzzcock's Boredom. That solo was an pisstake of guitar solos in general though. I personally can't stand 'em, they're nothing more than the guitar player wanking himself off musically while adding little to nothing to the actual song.

As for recent events: I'm seeing 999 this weekend. Going down to London with Charred Hearts (who are supporting). This will be the second time I've seen 999 and the 5th time I've seen Charred Hearts (it may be more, I can't remember). Either way I'm getting in for cheap, getting driven there and back in the hired minibus and get to get in before the punters. Should be a good night!

Can't stand NoFX. Their MUSIC is okay (in a pop-punk kinda way) but Fat Mike's (thats his name right?) voice is so f*cking annoying that it makes it unbearable. If anything I'd listen to earlier Greenday music over NoFX.

@ The Wattie thing: Never heard that rumor before but I assume its just people talking sh*t.

For me, punk is a guy singing, a mad guitar solo somewhere in the song

Most music has "a guy singing" but the mad solos sounds to me like you must be thinking of Metal, not Punk because most Punk Rock bands usually have short solos or no solos.

I often find the punk solos to be the best. Even though their almost always very short, their quite powerful and actually adds something to the song instead of acting like unnecessary filling (gitarr wanking).

Some examples:

Great solo between 1:18 and 1:30

Epic solo between 2:05 to 2:26

The best solos are the ones that are simple, stripped down and raw.

I actually like Dookie, and other old GreenDay, but American idiot? shoot me now, also, War on errorism is my least favourite NoFX album. So before you come on here judging me for having an opinion on something, learn more about me first, I listen to basically all punk, from the early new york scene/UK punk movement in the late 1970's to ska punk to Hardcore punk.

@JackyFiend: Boredom is an awesome song, I love the BuzZcocks, a friend of mine has seen them live, brilliant band.

@Sprackta:lol, sh*tlickers. suicidal.gif

@Damien: Cant beat The Cockney rejects icon14.gif Also, I agree with you on punk having the best solo's, the reason I dont like metal is becasue of their lenghthy, over the top sols which are just boring.

I dislike Green Day. A lot. I hate how when you say you don't like Green Day, people always say "wait, haven't you heard *insert old GD album here*, it's awesome!". Like it's not possible that I just don't like boring, bland pop punk. Basically, don't try to enforce your opinion as fact.

Someone should make a pop-punk topic so they can discuss all those bullsh*t bands elsewhere.

I agree on the Pop-Punk topic idea. I don't see what people find so appealing about Greenday (and pop-"punk" in general ) I haven't listened to that since I was about 13 or 14.

At least those kids are listening to and attemtping to play some good old fashioned punk rock. If you want to see a crime against punk go listen to Marilyn Manson's cover of "The KKK Took My Baby Away".

I just dislike when people bag on Greenday because it makes them feel punk rock. Like honestly, I'm not that big of s fan either but I just dislike people who bag on them and then name a band with equally crappy talent.

The ramones are sh*t honestly, theyre an OK rock n roll band at best. Punk was a bit more violent and A-Political from what I remember.

I disagree completely, the Ramones were awesome, f*ck being violent and A-political, different punk bands attacked their system in their own way, the ramones were the up-beat, fast, in your face type punk, they revolutionised it imo. Now Im not saying they sparked punk off like the sex pistols & The Damned, but I am saying that they made a huge impact towards the NY scene.

Anyway, I was wondering, whats everyones opinion on "Punk being dead"?

The crass song, Punk is dead pretty much describes the situation imo, then you get sh*t like The Exploited trying to say that it isn't dead, but it might as well have been dead with crap like them around.

Punk was never about fighting the system, it has always been about parties, dressing up and pissing off elders. Take bands like Discharge, they were neo hippies with a raw edge. The Ramones were not punk.

Also punk is dead for this generation, our youth is too soft and everyones afraid to lose a fight and get their asses handed to em.

"Punks not dead, you're just not looking hard enough."

I stand by that statement.

As for The Ramones; they were punk. They were one of the first punk bands and inspired pretty much every punk band that followed. Punk, when it started, wasn't about "destroying the system" or "f*cking the government." In the beginning it was simply about bringing rock and roll back to the people. The only thing they were rebelling against was the massive stadium rock tours that filled the early seventies.

I don't really get the whole "punks dead" thing, Seems like a pretty strange concept to me.

For me, punk is some good 'ol rock and roll, preferably fast as hell, always giving 150% on the soul & energy of the music, accessible to anyone for close to nothing and played by your average Joes who got inspired by some other punk band who got inspired by another one. that's the whole concept and life cycle of punk to me and as far as i can see, it ain't even close dieing, we've got plenty of good bands springing up here in Sweden all the time, more so than the previous years like these for example:

Bad Shermans (Oi! punk),

Gatans Lag (Oi! punk),

Poor Old Slugs (raw punk),

CDCP (raw punk/d-beat/hardcore),

Vindicate This! (Oi!)

The Radars (punk/pop-punk in a good way),

Körsbärsfettera (all women punk/Oi! band)

All of them rock and the last fore only sprung up within the last 4 months

For me, punk is about telling the people who say punk is dead to f*ck off and then not give a sh*t about them. I am a part of punk so it ain't dead as long as i exist.

Well "Punks dead" is one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard, I don't care how much anyone thinks I'm trying to score punk points in who can be the most punk but a dumbass statement like "punks dead" or something along those lines doesn't even deserve a better reply. Maybe saying "punk is to do this..." or "punk is to do that..." is wrong, but if anything, that is punk as f*ck in my opinion.

But really, punk is dead.

what he said. Punk is a big placement product, just like any other scene now. No name record companies that came out of the 'original' era such as TAANG!, Discord, and SST are all out for profit just like any other company, they've re-released every LP and EP that they have in their catalog, and put it on a 12 inch record for nostalgia sake, and sell it for $20 or more, but back in the 80's when they didn't get a sh*t they should sell that exact same record for $3.

The Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Social Distrotion are all sold inside Wal Mart stores. You can go into Hot Topic and buy EP of Discharge, and Subhumans, while you buy those you can go ahead and pick up a Germs, or a GBH shirt which are neatly folded next to the NWA, and Insane Clown Posse shirts, and go ahead and get that Bad Brains patch for your leather jacket that you bought for $300 on ebay by some 40 something year old that got it in 1981 for $50 so it has that 'old school' appearance and use on it already. While you're out and about at the mall go ahead and stop by the shoe store and pick up your Circle Jerks licensed Van's slip on shoes.

Oh ass reamer, don't forget that Crass produced for Chumbawamba.

gtfo, Punk isn't dead, but what I was trying to say was that The Exploited ruined the whole Punks not dead, f*ck you haters attitude by making that awful song.

But I absolutely love Crass - Punk is dead. Although I believe that Punk is alive in all of our hearts, what crass stated was true.

As long as punk bands still play live and people still listen to it like I and many of you do, it wont die, but with all of this bollocks on the radio nowadays, it is slowly dieing.

I don't really give a f*ck who they produced. I never made them out to be revolutionaries, they're just as full of sh*t as the Clash or the Sex Pistols were. I just like their music. Also, I don't think punk is nearly as commercial as you're making it out to be.

Some people just care too much.

I'm going to see 999 tomorrow. They're a band from 1977 who are still playing today. They may not be as popular as they were back in the seventies, but that hasn't stopped them recording albums and booking concerts. There's still a sizable enough fan base to fill gig venue; that, for me, is enough.

Punk may be dead, as far as the corporations and general public is concerned. It may be being mass-produced and packaged up nice and neat for the kids of today to purchase. But does that really mean it's dead? More and more kids are getting into the music because of places like Hot Topic and Wal Mart "selling out" these bands. Most of these kids will stop listening to the music after a couple of years, but the rest of them will continue listening to it, and discover what punk was really about.

I don't think any of you can look me in the eye and tell me you didn't get into punk through some well-known, mass-produced band like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones etc. Because the majority of us did, and we turned out alright.

I think everyone can agree on that, I got into punk when I was about 3 years old, my dad used to play the sex pistols all the time. Now Im still a huge pistols fan, seen 'em live, awesome show icon14.gif
