I have a question. What exactly is 'skate punk'?

Skate punk is typically characterized by an over-produced hardcore punk sound with 'clean'--that is sung rather than shouted or w/e--vocals, lyrics about dumb white bro I-grew-up-in-Orange-County sh*t, and no substance. There's usually one white guy with dreadlocks in the band, though that's not a prerequisite. See: Pennywise, Lagwagon, Millencolin, MXPX, NOFX (uuuugggghhhhh), and basically any '90s punk band that wasn't explicitly political (or fashion show street punk).

sorry to dig up a massively old post, but i was flicking through the thread bored at work. have to disagree with this one. imo skate punk is anything fast. yes most of it's is based from the 90's scene when skateboarding exploded but basically fast punk rock usually gets lumped in the skate punk category. see skatepunkers.net. i think these days its kinda seperated form what it used to be though. bands like lagwagon, pennywise, nofx, strungout etc are just punk rock. there's a whole new genre of skate punk bands that are just super quick

Would you (or anyone else) classify some of these as skate punk? I like these songs.

Definitely, that suicide machines song is sick.

The albums I grew up on that stuck the most would be

strungout - either suburban teenage wasteland blues or twisted by design. Their latest album transmission alpha delta is also fantastic

Lagwagon - trashed

Pennywise - full circle, straight ahead

Despite them being a completely different band now I always had a soft spot for blink 182s dude ranch.

I like nofx, but their albums usually have alot of hit and miss on them imo.

As for newer stuff, a Wilhelm scream is amazing. Their career suicide album is fantastic. One hell of a live band to see! Also a band called mute which are pretty good.
