You talking about 1st wave stuff like The Skatalites? If so, I can't really stand too much of it either.

Seriously? I f*cking love them. To each their own though.

Key words there "can't stand too much." If I'm in the mood to mellow out, I'll pop them in along with Desmond Dekker, but I really can't listen for them for too long.

I dunno. sad.gif

I'm the same way Doink, but I could listen to Dekker himself all night. Second Wave is a lot different, one of my favourite genres out there.

I love Cancerslug, The Misfits, The Exploited, Aus Rotten, Crass, The Restarts, Against Me!, The Casualties, Dead Kennedys, The Descendents, Flux of Pink Indians, Minor Threat, Fugazi if you consider them punk, Bad Religion, Oi Polloi and Oi N'ast.

Cancerslug is one of my favorite bands and pretty much blows every other horror punk band out of the water.

Streetlight Manifesto is the sh*t as well.

Cancerslug rocks too much ass... Battle Hymns I and II especially. Die You f*cks, Pale Moonlight, The Coulda Beens, The Beyond, Sorceress, Demighoul...lotta great tracks from them.

and Streetlight Manifesto is one of the few third wave ska bands capable of producing unique sound with varying styles and influences on both their records (three if you include the remake of KN).

Awesome list Dem, Oi's always there for me when the other stuff gets way over the top.

I'm here to help wink.gif

anyways I think most of you haven't heard any good ska so I'm going to post some links to some good ska/skinhead reggae

John Holt - Reggae from the Ghetto

Symarip - Skinhead Moonstomp

Toots & the Maytals- 54-56

Dice the Boss - Tea House from Emperor Roscoe

Tommy McCook

This is just what i like, and as you can see i like instrumentals with electric organs the most, but thats the good thing with ska and early reggae, theres so much different stuff so you cant really say that you don't like it.

sorry for going a bit of topic blush.gif

The Melvins albums featuring Jello Biafra on vocals are ace. Not all punk, not all metal, and just a little bit of rockabilly. The lyrics for most songs are typical Biafra; satirical, political, and with a general distaste for most of society. Probably my favorite song (off of Sieg Howdy!) is "Those Dumb Punk Kids (Will Buy Anything)", in which Biafra lauds his former Dead Kennedys bandmates and what punk became after the fact:

Punk's been dumbed down

To just another form of TV

Marketed to shoppers

Spoon fed cartoon rebellion like sheep

Flock to worship any old school band

Who cares if they still care or if they're bad

Something new in town

Who wants to know?

And look at all the whores

Reunions for wrong reasons

Playing only songs from the good old days about how bad the good old days were

So why not us?  We don't even like this stuff no more

But look at all that retro-racket cash

Those dumb punk kids will buy anything

We'll sue the guy who wrote the songs

So we can sell them into commercials

Steal the name and hit the road

Trashing all our band stood for

We won't rehearse, sound worse

Dig up some old child star

Who never learns the words

Hey, we're back

Show us how much you care

The merch booth's right over there

Buy! BUY!!

And if our scam works

What a band wagon it will be

Malcom in the Middle in the Misfits

or Mary Kate and Ashley

Gary Coleman in Black Flag

Courtney in Nirvana at last

And Emmanuel Lewis back in action singing for the Germs

When will it end?

When will people see this for what it is

Rock and Roll Swindle Pistols backed a thief

So how bout Kenny Boy Lay

In Dead Kennedys

Cuz those dumb punk kids

Will buy anything

Punk and rap, more alike than you'd first think.

they are, and they are both facing the same problem, punk's call them posers, rappers call them wiggars, but there the same suburban middle class kids trying to be "cool" by adopting a lifestyle. luckily most of them think that emo is "cooler" right now, so there not as widespread anymore

If we're gonna talk ska, you have to show The Toasters some love. icon14.gif

The Toasters - I Wasn't Gonna Call You Anyway

Saw them live at a local Ska Festival in '06. Had my picture taken with Buck Hingley. Rad stuff.

Also definitely worth a mention, early Madness:

Madness - Bed and Breakfast Man

Biafra is just as big a hypocrite as the Dead Kennedys are.

I like DK though. I don't like Biafra's post DK stuff.

Oh and if you guys like punk/ska, check out the Flatliners, they've got a pretty unique sound imo, sort of a cross between hardcore and ska.

Another great band from that era is The (English) Beat. I watched them play Mirror in the bathroom in Dance Craze and I was hooked since then.

Here's the song I'm talking about:

Biafra is just as big a hypocrite as the Dead Kennedys are.

Explain? I've heard this repeatedly but nobody can really come with a good answer. Most people say he "sold out" just because he's not singing in a f*cking hardcore punk band anymore, or that he actually cares about political and social ambitions more than some sh*tty music scene.

He certainly hasn't done anything out of his way to make more money or garner more attention than he deserves.

Edit: And if you mean the whole lawsuit thing, that had nothing to do with Jello. His band mates sued him because he wouldn't allow songs that HE wrote and composed to be used in corporate commercials. The only way he screwed them out of money was by not letting them sell their proverbial pussies to some corporate cock to be repeatedly flogged for extra cash.

Biafra agreed, along the the remaining members of DK, to allow their songs to be used in major movies, and Biafra collected royalties from it.

And he definitely has gone out of his way to garner more attention. For Christ's sake, the song you posted is a cry for attention.

I'd like to see proof. The only major movies I know of that have used Dead Kennedys songs have been released recently, and this was after the rest of the band sued Jello for supposedly withholding money (even though it was proven to be an accounting error Biafra wasn't responsible for) and acquired the rights to license the songs without Biafra's consent.

And, if he were desperate for attention, it would be released on a major record label (not his own) and it'd be a Dead Kennedys song.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1389065/

Shows all the movies that DK has licensed their songs for. The ones prior to 1998 had to be approved by Biafra as well as the band, since the remaining members didn't have full rights to the songs yet.

I don't see how releasing songs on your own label makes you less of an attention whore. You don't have to be on a major label to be an attention whore.

A good part of being an attention whore is actually getting attention. If I had never posted the lyrics to the song, would you have any idea it even existed?

I had heard the song before.

You can still be an attention whore and not get much attention. I think a lot of people ignore Biafra because he's been spewing the same anti-corporation bullsh*t for 20 years now, and people realize he's a complete hypocrite.
