freshlaundryX
Would you or would you not like a manual shift in some cars? (it would depend on whether you get into a manual car or not. don't like it? don't get in a car with a stick shift.) (360) Left Trigger - Clutch Right Trigger, Right Pedal - Accelerator A button - Brake Both Triggers - Start Car (a la Paradise) The way I imagine shifting gears would be to hold down the left trigger (clutch/neutral) and use the right stick to choose the gear. A small hud display of the shifter could show you what gear you are transitioning from and where you are shifting it to next. At all other times the right stick would control the view as normal. If you are already in cockpit view the left trigger would cause the player to look slightly down at the stick instead of out the windshield and there would be no need for the HUD display. Releasing the clutch as you pop in the acceleration would be something you'd learn over time until it was second nature. Otherwise you could end up with some jerky transitions and you might even stall the car trying to get away from police. Has there been any game that has tried to pull off this dynamic? (And I don't mean just tapping one button to change gears.) I think it would feel a hell of a lot more powerful and you'd really get a sense of the engine's power, torque, and your traction on the road. Any takers? bagga rabbit
Shifting's a drag..can't "shoot and shift".
Aimee
I don't hate the idea, but i'd be completely crap at it. I have better things to think about, like running over peds, rather than changing gears Some people might go for it though, because i know there's usually the option of automatic and manual in racing games. Ak4tsevEn
Absolutly no way will Rockstar EVER include you actually having to shift gears! WHY? no point at all, will be soo frustrating cuz we will all forget when we are getting chased by 5-
Darrel
I'm with Emm Ell on this one. Don't hate the idea totally, but far too complex. Even GT doesn't have a clutch control. It's just R1 Up gear L1 down. Edited January 18, 2008 by Darrel
b4rtsimps0n
Like the idea..Just without the looking down in cockpit view..you're not supposed to do that in real life too
KillerKabel
Cool, if it was an option... If this was un optionable, and it was in the game... I would kill myself...
Eddie280
Yea it would be good for a racing game but it would be too complicated if i was doing a casual dive by. Also i wouldnt want to have to work out if each car was a manual or automatic whenever i robbed it. no offense,

*C-Note*
GTA is not a racing game. This idea completely sucks. PS.Don't take this personally.

freshlaundryX
PS.Don't take this personally. I don't, dude. Most of the people on this board wouldn't know a good idea from a hole in their asses. Actually, I'm sure they think a hole in their ass is a good idea. Which, actually, it is. So maybe I was wrong about them.

Johnny Burbank
Depends how realistic the engine sounds and audio effects are. If I could cruise through a neighborhood doing 40 in 1st gear and revving the engine real high, with the sounds reverbbing off walls and all that, that would be pretty cool, but it should definitely be optional. Reincarnated Kenji
It'd be cool if it was an option, they could use the right thumbstick to shift up and down like in Need For Speed. It's just better if it was implemented as an option though.
freshlaundryX
they could use the right thumbstick to shift up and down like in Need For Speed. one of my questions was whether anyone had done the 'shift with stick' option. So from what you are saying, NFS had it, but it didn't have a clutch though, right?
Mmjr3
Dont think it would be a horrible idea as a couple other people said, just a pain in the ass but for the people that choose to use the cars that could be manual they would get used to it. I dont think a couple car models that had a shift option is an outrageous idea either, a possibility however highly unlikely. maybe just a button shift though. So from what you are saying, NFS had it, but it didn't have a clutch though, right? The new one has a clutch system. Dont know how it works but the options are there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I cant imagine how fun itd be to use especially if you treat the left analog like the shifter. Hell, I cant even imagine it at all. The analog will always pops into 'neutral'. No point pretending that the analog is the shifter when a button can work just as well if not better like a paddle shifter. freshlaundryX
just cause it feels good, man. better than a button i'm sure. there's a reason that people with nice sports cars drive shift. i'll drop it though. the people have spoken. crux989
Im holdin a 360 controller in my hand and Im tryin to see howd itd feel. I guess if I got it right it could feel cool if I got the hang of it. It brings back all the frustration I remembered having when learnin to drive stick. I can imagine being just as pissed if not more in this game. You gotta consider that the left analog was used before to look around your car. It always pissed me off in Pre SA games to not see where it was I was turning into or just seeing where my car was relative to everything else around me. Same applied to cars in SA with hydrolics. If clutch or manual shift was added as an option then it would further complicate the controls GTA already has. I'm still for it though
mista morino
Shifting is not a bad idea , but the clutch is. It should be an option. Maybe if we can mod cars , it could be an option at the garage. And being able to configure the controler should also be an option.
visionist
I'd rather Niko swapped the ratios himself, and we can see him do it in the in-car view. And when the car takes damage, we can hear the gearshifts getting gratier. It would rock to see Niko driving like my Dad does, ie. if he's doing 30, he'll put it straight into 5th , and then kick it down when you accelerate. Ronnyboy
I remeber people saying have it automatic, but have cars that act like automatics where you will hear it shift and the engine noises change. But you dont control it.
