Saget
Have you ever heard of this? DVORAK keyboard I kinda didn't have anything to do, so I went to wikipedia to look for the origins of the QWERTY keyboard. Interestingly enough, it mentioned the DVORAK layout, and so I looked further into it, with reviews saying how faster you can type with this layout and stuff. I wondered "hey, it would be nice if I could try this thing". Then I found this nice tutorial and was like, "Awesome, this is it". After changing the settings, The key-swapping began. Now, this entire post is being typed with the new layout. I tell ya, IT IS FREAKING WEIRD. This post is taking forever to type, getting used to it will be no easy task, but I know that I will, eventually. I read that MacBooks kinda support the Dvorak layout, too. So, did anyone ever looked for alternate keyboard layouts? And what do you think of those two? =) |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
darthYENIK
I've never had a problem with typing with the qwerty. And maybe if I were just starting to type, I'd try the Dvorak. But it's too much of a hassle to relearn how to type.

Having most keys on the "home" row of the keyboard helps a lot, it even helps for typing in portuguese. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
SHXC
lol, Nah. I think that if I were to go from using my lovely QWERTY keyboard to using DVORAK I'd lose my marbles.
Picolini
Hmm, just "practicing" while looking at the picture of the lay out, it doesn't look like it'd be too hard to pick up. I've heard of it just recently and I might try it out some time. I just tried to go set it using the steps in that site you posted and it didn't work... I got it to go in the list, but when I selected it and hit apply then ok, it still didn't change edit: I just got it to work! It's pretty funny typing like this It'd take some time to get used to it completely, but I may give it a chance. Btw, I just typed this whole sentence using it Edited January 17, 2008 by Picolini

Picolini
Yeah, luckily I have two screens so I can keep that open on the other screen while typing. I just did an online test and I got 7wpm, before was just a guess. I'd be so much easier if I had a Dvorak keyboard... Doing the same sentence that I got 7wpm on, but with the QWERTY setting, I got 54wpm... It'll take a while until I get that fast with Dvorak. I've used the Dvorak keyboard, but found it annoying switching back and forth. I wouldn't mind it as a standard, but I don't think it will happen. Svip
I tried DVORAK once, but never really got to the point where it seemed useful. Currently I use two different keymaps; US-intl and DK. I switch between them using Caps Lock, cause I never use Caps Lock. :| Also configured the light for Caps Lock to indicate that DK is used. Could add more, but I don't see any need for more. Girish
I fail to see how Dvorak is simpler than Qwerty, but I think it's more of a personal preference. I've been using the Qwerty keyboard for so long that it's near impossible to change to any other format.
Picolini
It's simpler because the most commonly used letters are placed in the best (or better) positions so they can be pressed quicker and easier. QWERTY came from typewriters where they put the most commonly used letters on the left side and jumbled around so you'd slow down, since they were mechanical and couldn't keep up. But not with regular keyboards being super light and pretty much lightning fast, there only speed limiter is your ability to hit the keys. Dvorak is basically useless for most, as QWERTY is the predominantly used set up nowadays. But, if you do LOTS of typing and you'll be using your own keyboard or PC set up most of the time, Dvorak might be something you want to look into learning. I for one just want to learn it for fun

I for one just want to learn it for fun Ahahahah same here, I'm only learning this thing because I'm bored. It is really fun to type like this. I also found it better due to the fact that the best letters are in the middle of the keyboard. And we'll see if this is actually faster, time will tell us. Yeah, I took my keys off and put them into the "Dvorak" place. AND YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY NICE? I found this unofficial brazillian Dvorak layout, which is perfect for me. It has accents and symbols and even my beloved ç (cecedil). My keyboard is now complete. It is interesting that typing in portuguese is like, 5x faster than english. Maybe because I'm more "used" to it... |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
matthew1g
So what exactly brings the name of the layout DVORAK? I know qwerty is because those are the first letters on the keyboard, but I fail to find a pattern which relates to the keyboard layout and the name

Picolini
I'm up to 11wpm now. It's what I got 3 times through out a 5-6 sentence paragraph... still a bit confusing. If I feel like continuing this after a while I might pick up a cheap-o keyboard and rearrange the keys. I don't want to screw this one up by doing that, it's too nice. GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah I am sure if I was taught from the beginning with that layout I would be just as fast a typer as I am with the traditional QWERTY.
Saggy
I don't really see why anyone would have a problem with QWERTY. I've gotten too adjusted to it over the years. I actually did get up to about 40-50 WPM with DVORAK at a time, but it just wasn't worth it when typing with QWERTY was so natural to me, so I naturally lost practice and can no longer type in it very well at all. This Dvorak x QWERTY thing will be just like english x portuguese to me. No matter how much english I write or speak, it's still not enough for my portuguese to become affected by it. Same applies to keyboards, no matter how much I type in my Dvorak keyboard, I will not forget my "QWERTY" skills, I will just master both with time. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
Saggy
Well, it's not so much forgetting QWERTY as much as it was just never really being able to get the DVORAK to the same level as QWERTY, because sometimes typing in DVORAK just got too annoying and I would always go for something more natural. You can make a one-handed key-board with the dvorak keymap, though. I remember seeing it done on TheScreenSavers years ago, so I can't really remember how they did it too well, but I'm sure you could figure it out. Picolini
Ah beat me, but I didn't have any mistakes Me loves the backspace key, lol. As for QWERTY, I get like 65wpm. Like missing a comma, writing "everybody" instead of "every body", things like that. Edit: Redid the test, still 18wpm with Dvorak, but no mistakes this time. BUT I only typed a short sentence with QWERTY and got 44wpm. If I type in portuguese, I bet that speed is doubled. Gouveia
Got something around 10-15 words per minute, but still, I'll do what Picolini said. Because I look at the S, press the S and an O comes out of it @Saget: I think I can get 40-50 wpm in english. I'm just so comforted with the language that I even dream in english, and I often forget the meanings in portuguese But still, in portuguse I can double it, and my mother can type even faster than me. Of course, she works for, like, 16 years with computers Edited January 20, 2008 by VinnyGouveia
