SHXC
Ok, This has been going on for a while, But now it's really getting to me.. Alot of time, When I hand isn't even anywhere near the mouse, My cursor will move around my screen. Sometimes slowly, sometimes mind-f*cking fast and lasting for a few seconds, then stopping somewhere. It's really annoying now, Especially as when I'm trying to play a game, the character starts going crazy as the mouse if moving itself. Any help please? Picolini
Is it a laser mouse? Make sure there there isn't sh*t on the light. Mine gets dog hair in there and flips out from time to time. Also, make sure the surface you're using to move the mouse doesn't have small ridges in it, like a wood table. I had to get a mouse pad because my desk is wood and doesn't have a smooth enough finish. If it's a mouse with a ball, get a new mouse Also, the mouse could just be shot. Maybe see if the manufacturer has a more up to date driver... those would be my only suggestions.
Saget
What Picolini said. Also, red mousepads (or mousepads with something red in them) are known to screw the laser. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
SHXC
It's a laser mouse. On various occasions I've got a cotton wool bud thing and cleaned it, and it is clean. And I also use a mousepad. It still does it randomly though.

Otter
Are you sure it's laser, and not optical?
SHXC
Are you sure it's laser, and not optical? Yeah. Optical. I was trying to think of the word whilst typing my previous post but couldnt remember it. It's about a year old, Saget.

I was trying to think of the word whilst typing my previous post but couldnt remember it. It's about a year old, Saget. It's not that old. And I fixed my problem by buying a new mouse. Bought it in 2004, works fine until now, apart from a little problem with the right button, but that's from overuse. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|

I was trying to think of the word whilst typing my previous post but couldnt remember it. It's about a year old, Saget. If it's optical I think it needs to be on a generally flat colour (as in, no crazy ass patterns). My mouse used to f*ck up but when I got a basic mousepad it worked alot better. It gets specially worst if your mousepad has red things, that's why I mentioned. Black mousepads ftw. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|
xtal256
Aaargh! I hate it when it does that! One tiny bit of dust on the desk and the mouse will fly across the screen. Quite frankly, i thing ball mice are better. Maybe mine is just a sh*t mouse (it was only $20). btw, what's the difference between optical and laser mice? i'm too lazy to google it. SHXC
My mousemat is black, and the mouse is clean, so again, I still don't know what's causing the problem.
Picolini
Before when I was having problems similar to this (it turned out to be the wood grain on the desk though) I read things saying the Window's mouse drivers messed up or something... I'd assume you already went to the mouse option through the control panel... maybe try going to devices and seeing if the drivers are up to date, which they should, you can't really update mice as they're about as advanced as they can get Do you have another mouse you can test on that PC? Maybe you can test another and pinpoint it to your PC or your mouse.
SHXC
Yep. Tried both mice? Thing is though, It never used to do it. Only in the past sort of.. couple of months.
Rocketkiller
Cheap optical mice suck. I have one that will move around slowly on pretty much any surface when the mouse itself isn't moving. I think it's because it was built cheaply, with bad tolerances so when the light reflected it read it wrong. Get a laser mouse, it'll work perfectly on any surface apart from anything transparent, I can even hold it around 3-4mm above my table and it'll work perfectly. Hell I can use it perfectly on my arm. Superfly.
I had a similar problem where my optical mouse would spaz out at random times. Turned out there was a little hitch in the USB port it was plugged into. So, maybe try switching USB ports?
Otter
I'll agree with the consensus here - optical mice suck. It could actually be a somewhat miniscule scratch, etc. My wireless mouse is optical, so it's doubly sucky - but I only use it for watching sh*t on my TV. Girish
I have been having this problem for two years now. It's either the USB port or the surface. A good mouse pad has reduced the problem frequency, but the problem still persists. Somehow, I still haven't been able to get my USB to PS/2 adapter working with my mouse.
