Nemesi
Hi there. My computer was smooth until a few weeks ago, then suddenly became very slow... Slow loading normal programs (IE, Firefox), or even going through folders on the pc... I'm well protected (Kaspersky Internet security, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware blaster), and I usually check everything with Tune-Up utilities and Hijack This. Specs of my pc aren't so great (Win XP pro, 2.6 GHz, 1024MB ram, nvidia FX5200), but I don't blam them, cause everything was very smooth... I have not installed anything new, I even uninstalled unused softwares after the slow down, but this didn't sort anything... Is there something I can check/fix, or do I have to format everything? Thanx

EmSixTeen
Go and get AVG, best free software you'll ever download. The statement isn't true, but yes AVG is the best free anti-virus software.. In fact, it's my preferred anti-virus full-stop.
cold fusion 33
Try: Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk defragmeter. Should do the trick. CF33
gtamodder
Try right clicking my computer, click properties, click the advanced tab, then click settings, then choose "adjust for best peformance", then click apply then ok. However it will put it in the classic theme, but when my computer was slow doing this fixed it.
Nemesi
The CCleaner did something, thanks. Disk Defragmenting is something that I should do, it's been a while since last, and the C: is a mess. Do you suggest to do it with WindowsXp utility, or with TuneUp? Because years ago I defragmented the disk with the Norton Utility (the one in the SystemWork), but for Windows it was fragmented still.
anus
I really don't know why peope say AVG is the best antivirus. AVG scores some of the worst scores in anti virus tests held by respectable sites. It's detection rate is absolutely MEDIOCRE. So if you want a GOOD free antivirus, go for AntiVir, it's better than all free antivirus and almost all paid ones in detection rate. Well, for speeding up your PC, do the usual stuff, update your antivirus, Ad-Aware, Spybot and then boot up your PC in SAFE MODE (tap F8 when PC is booting up) and do a full scan. Afterwards run CCleaner and then run a disk defragmenter utility of your choice. I personally use AusLogics Disk Defrag since I find Windows' inbuilt one to be way too slow, this programme is free and fast and gets the job done. But use TuneUp or the XP one, your choice, I just think XP's one is more time consuming. I hope this helps !
Slamman
With XP you can roll back via System Restore as well as one could do with the feature in Windows ME when new, not always effective but I got it to cure an infected PC better then without trying it. More then one AntiVirus is recommended, I know, but they walk over each other as well and can cause headaches in that manner too so I run just one at a time. Check the background resources and functions. I had a faulty laptop battery slow my Dell to a crawl, so it can be a number of things one has to trouble shoot. If Maximum PC promotes Grisoft, I will continue to use it, it works for me good so far, no complaints at all Edited January 21, 2008 by Slamman
