matthew1g
I've been wanting to make a small 50gig partition for OSX for quite some time now. I've been reading on the net that' it's slow and has a lot of issues. so is it really worth the install? I don't have any reason for using MAC really, I just want to experience another OS, use its pre installed applications and such. I don't think performance will be a problem either (last time I checked iMAC ran on a 2. something C2D, I have a Q6600 quad, not supposed to run into any slowdowns. thoughts? Svip
It is technically illegal to do so. Cause in order for you to at all install it on a PC, it would require a cracked kernel of Mac OS X. Which is illegal in the first place. Though, you should take that with a gain of salt, it is a bit of grey area, where certainties are bit... off. But if you really want to try a different OS, which will work and probably won't be slow and a hassle, I suggest you try Linux instead. Personally, for new people, I would suggest Ubuntu, since it is fairly easy. Don't worry about price, Linux is free. And I mean that in a completely legal sense. Waste
I've ran it before and had only slight issues with it. I was able to get it to support 3D applications including games and other stuff, but with slightly lower framerates. Was running it for about 7 months before I had PC issues and the had to replace my motherboard, and unfortunately, the new motherboard had a chipset that OSX didn't support so I had to stop using it. Overall though, it's really worth the try. OSX is a killer OS and I'd really love for it to possible for them to release OEM versions of it. (Even though I know it never will happen.) As a note, before you try and use it, search google for the osxproject and look at their hardware list and you can get a good idea if you are able to run it or not. Gouveia
Well, since you want to experience another OS only, try Linux or any of those Unix copies. They're pretty easy to install.
Otter
OSX can take full advantage of your PC - so, it's only as slow as your machine. It runs super fast on my core2duo. There are issues abound, however. Go to the insanely mac forums to play around. Now, what Svip said about illegality only comes into play if you download a pre-patched copy of leopard. If you own it, there is no law saying that you can't patch it to suit your needs. While it may be against apple policy, a government draconian enough to bar you from modifying your own possessions is a scary thought. He's right - there's a lot of grey area, but you need not worry about persecution for installing a legal copy of leopard on your machine. ...as far as I know. Honestly, there are no straight answers out there on this sort of thing. For Americans, the DMCA has put the fear of god into a lot of websites out there. To me, the idea of an EULA enforced by law is just f*cking goofy. Apparently, while cracking software and downloading cracks is illegal (in the US) using a patch written by someone else is not prosecutable. Or something. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracks Edited January 16, 2008 by Otter
PSXtreme
Otter: Breaking an EULA is against the law. However, it's a civil matter, not a criminal matter. However, technically the Leopard EULA says you may only install it on an 'Apple-branded' computer. So just put one of those Apple stickers that comes in the Leopard box on your case and you're all set Also, it is possible to run it without cracking it.. you just have to emulate or have a motherboard that has EFI instead of BIOS. Forty
Nobody has really answered his question though: is there hassle involved, and will it run well? I don't think he asked for a suggestion to get Linux. I'd like to know the answer to his question as well. One comment about Ubuntu....I've installed Ubuntu on two different laptops and have never gotten it working properly. I really wish Linux would finally develop a distro that didn't require researching the terminal commands and knowing information beforehand. I have NEVER gotten my wireless cards to work properly in Linux which is a great frustration for those of us who hate cords. If I didn't have friends that loved Linux, I wouldn't have even gotten it up and running. The wireless issue was never resolved, though, so I ended up removing it.
