gta_king
Definately agree, excellant movie. Even people who don't have any interest in anime need to watch it.
Sauron
I watched it not long ago, and really didn't think it was all that great. I thought some scenes were great, but overall I think there are much better animations out there. Maybe I bought into the hype and my expectations were too high. f*ck the gay blob. Similar thing happened to me. I went into watching this film with too high expectations and it didn't quite deliver. I still thought it was good though and like I said even for people without an interest in anime it's something that should be watched. I however agree that there are much better out there. WalkerBoh
True, tis not the greatest. But it is great. In my younger days when I watched DBZ all the time this was quite a change, turned me into a crazy anime fanboy. Cowboy Bebop, the series, was the best thing in animation for me after akira. Uno Carb
You can't deny the insane animation work that was done. The scale of things, use of multi-planing and the insane detail of the world and the characters rocks. Speaking of animation, has anybody seen Ghost In The Shell? T'is awesome. Either way both are awesome, although the Series has some of the greatest themes I've heard. I still need to see the second film though. I guess I may as well mention it but Evangelion is also a must see for anyone. It's a 26 Episode series followed by a movie but it's one of the must watch things in Anime alongside Akira and Ghost In The Shell. It came along at a time when the industry was stagnating and revolutionised it. It may be very overrated now by a lot of the fans (and yes I am guilty of this) but it's impact is undeniable and it's another thing that needs to be seen. Its impact is just as large as Akira's or Ghost In The Shells.

Picolini
It's probably one of the best anime movies out there, at least imo. Another one I like is Spirited Away... in fact I'm going to watch that right now. With all that said, I'm not a huge anime fan... but some just kick ass. fox09
I've never really been a fan of Miyazaki. I might just be some slack-jawed yokel who doesn't understand all the intellectual workings of his movies, but to me, his movies just seem weird for the sake of being weird. Forty
Miyazaki's films are easily my favorite animated films. Spirited Away is absolutely fantastic, and is the only animated film I've seen that could legitimately compete with my top live action flicks. Akira blew my mind, visually. For a 20 year old film (made in 1988) it still looks fantastic. There are definitely times that the story gets a bit far out, but what Japanese story doesn't? I've been a proud owner of it since I've had a DVD player.
Don Garcia aka NjNakedSnake
Cowboy Bebop, the series, was the best thing in animation for me after akira. Word. _________ Wow, the whole Akira film on Google?? Nice, very nice.
Tetsuo2501
the 2000+ page manga is a billion times better than the movie, the movie's ending makes me cry...in the good way. Oh, just a little trivia for you all, the link to the movie at the top of the page is the 1993 dubbing of Akira, done by Orion Home Video...On the VHS box they spell Tetsuo "Tetsou" Akira was my first tattoo ever. WalkerBoh
Nice tat . I was drunk one time and was discussing doing the same thing. Yeah the special editon dvd is much better then that google vid (quality also duh), that is off the vhs I'd seen the first time. Rent or buy it. fox09
Doesn't the special edition DVD have a new dubbing though? I definitely like the old dubbing better. Cam Clarke is a great voice actor, really suits Kaneda.
Spectre95
Did anyone else love the music in this movie? It was one of the crucial elements on what made Akira so great. I mean, how often do you hear stuff like this in anime? http://media.putfile.com/Kaneda-74 Brilliant I say. Tsuroki
Doesn't the special edition DVD have a new dubbing though? I definitely like the old dubbing better. Cam Clarke is a great voice actor, really suits Kaneda. Redubs are usually very poorly done. I'd like to get my hands on a copy of Akira to add to my (relatively modest) DVD collection. Tetsuo2501
i myself like the pioneer dubbing the best, the other two are poorly translated, and the voices are f*cking terrible.

I'm reading the reviews right now for the Pioneer one, seems everyone thinks it's sh*t. Probably based on opinion I suppose.

Claude GTA3
I'm really not into anime,it's gay,the only anime I respect and honor is DragonBall. but this anime is a classic, and it doesn't have gay orange ninjas,so I'll watch it.
Hayden
Isn't this illegal? Who authorised to have the movie hosted on Google Video? Nevertheless, I've always been interested to watch it and now I have the chance. Thanks for the link.

Crokey
Did anyone else love the music in this movie? It was one of the crucial elements on what made Akira so great. I mean, how often do you hear stuff like this in anime? http://media.putfile.com/Kaneda-74 Brilliant I say. Indeed the music is class, the OST one of my most played in Media Player, well I say the OST, I mean Reqiuem, such a great composition. As for the film, it is a classic, it did in someways help to introduce Anime to the West (well at least Europe) so you can't diss it for that. And it is fantasically done (as 40 said) for a film from 1988 it hasn't really aged at all.
MyStIcAL_623
Just finished watching that movie today and liked it. the whole thing with the guy turning into a giant pink thing freaked me out a little and it also reminded me of Cartman in this one episode. I just want to ask you ladies if there is other good anime movies as good as this one or better?
