How much $ is Rockstar spending...

to make this game, GTA IV ? They have like 200 employees and they sent a group to live in new york and explore the city to make the game.

I wonder the same thing myself. GTA IV (GTA in general) is a HUGE, AAA, big-budget title, so it has to cost millions to make this game.

Partially correct, The Rockstar team in NYC live there, they weren't sent there, maybe some moved, but that's an assumption. The mapping of NYC's locations happened before GTA3 was made and it could be they did additional work later, but that's a long time ago. Recently someone stated there are 160 employees at Rockstar (North?) and that sounds like they have some info based in fact to pick that number vs 200.

It doesn't take money to look around New York.

No, but it takes money to get around New York. Subways, buses, taxis, etc. Unless they just walked around, which is a little unlikely since I'm sure they ventured into 4 of the 5 boroughs, plus parts of New Jersey across the Hudson River, so they'd have to either take the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels, the George Washington Bridge, a PATH train, or a ferry. All of which cost money, and it would be ludicrous to try and walk the entire route.

Rockstar Games is located in Manhattan, so I'm sure that they didn't waste much dough on sending people around for research, unless they sent a team from Rockstar North.

What about the 'no-money-down' programs and Government loans I see on TV... you can start to make money with no capital!??

I wish....anyway

It could be added that the Hot Coffee cases are now behind Take 2 and some new organization with in the company, they are strategically setting up to have a much better profit in 08. The sheer interest in GTA alone makes it something they brought up a lot in talking with stockholders recently

How much did the Bay film Transformers cost? That was FX heavy. How about that new film Cloverfield?? Looks fairly good but not much word prior to the trailer, seemed odd.

Sorry I'm getting to OT with this. They say the PS3 is costing the most to build on so that 50 mil comes in handy! haha biggrin.gif

Here are some estimated numbers on the amount of recent GTA games sold.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Playstation 2) - 13 Million Copies Sold

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Playstation 2) - 12 Million Copies Sold

Grand Theft Auto III (Playstation 2) - 11 Million Copies Sold

Just becasue Rockstar are based in New york doesn't mean they didnt go out and explore. You'd would be surprised just how much research went into the game. Traffic flow in certain areas, observing different textures on certain buildings etc. Tons and tons of research.

I'm not attacking you in rebuttal but there was press about this during the GTA3 development and that even though Liberty City then had no obvious ties other then it's general layout, they took a lot of the elements they found in NYC and incorporated them into 3

I can't remember in what article it was, but last October, I remember several news stories mentioning an estimated $400 million in revenues for R* from GTA IV alone. That kind of potential can justify spending the big bucks in development.
