Wiping a Hard Drive

I have an older desktop with windows 95 on it and for some reason I can't install 98 over it. I need a program that I can burn to a disk that can completely wipe a hard drive. I tried looking on my own, but kept finding ones that only worked for XP. I would prefer if this program compatible with all PC's. (In case I ever have to quickly wipe my own) sarcasm.gif

Thanks for teh help. tounge.gif

Get a copy of Damn Small Linux. It will boot from a CD and run on any machine that can run W98. First make sure that you have the partitions you want, and that they are FAT32 (vfat) type. That's the only type W98 will be happy with. To check or modify your partition table, use fdisk. It's a command line tool, and you can find all the how-to's on-line. Once you have the partition ready, all you need to do is create the file system on it. Use the mkfs utility. Also command line. Keep in mind that drive names in Linux go hda, hdb, hdc, and so on. If you only have one hard disk, you'll want to work with hda. Partitions are simply numbered. If you'll only have one FAT32 partition, it will be called hda1. Under Windows/DOS that will become your C: drive.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.
