Like calling every black man afro american... Or something... ... It's late ... Anyway... I think he's from Boznia... Since there was a war not too far ago... Maybe that's what he's running from... Seddo
All's that Rockstar have said is 'Eastern European' and that's about how much info Rockstar will probably reveal about Niko's nationality. And anyway does it matter where Niko his from as long as he has the ability to waste someone that's all we need.
fishermanGTA
I think it is like an American's view on the New Zealand/Aussie accent. American's cant tell the difference, but ask someone from one of the two countires, and you have a debate on your hands. Is there someone from around that area of the world who can identify the accent?

hsacic
Here´s some facts for you that I hope I won´t need to repeat. -Nikolai is not a Serbian name,it´s Russian, but Niko is not Russian,so there are many possibilities here -Nikola however,is Serbian,Nikolai can be a variant off this one -Bellic is not Yugoslavian name,Belic is the closest to be Yugoslavian. -In Nikos resume it said that he had been in the "Balkan Peace Force",even if the resume is false, then why choose just that force outta thousand others ? - "Zdravo Burazeru" is used by Bosnians (mainly inhabitants of Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia)and Serbs, notRussians - Although the accent when Niko says this is not entirely correct, this may probably be from voice actor not being from Balkan. - It has been confirmed from Rockstar that Niko isn´t Russian, why do ignorant people claim he is ? -I´ve thought ever since trailer 2 that "I´m the one,who survived could refer to the Balkan war (1992-1995), but I think that it is far fetched. My educated guess is that Niko is from either an former Yugoslavian country, or from the East block, Ukraine for example, I do think that Niko is based on a Yugoslavian person because of the name, only Rockstar don´t want to build their character off a already existing person like they did with Tommy Vercetti and Tony Cipriani. They have altered Nikos name from something very Yugoslavian to something far from the stereotype Yugo´s, unique name, surname, and attributes. Therefore only loosely basing Niko as Yugoslav, but still Rockstar´s own creation with own personality. KrazY
he is a stereotypical generic eastern european. Technically he is not. Bellic, his surname ends in -ic, which is extremely common in Croatian and Serbian. And now that we've found out that expression about his brother isn't Russian, he is clearly from Croatia/Serbia. fishermanGTA
he is a stereotypical generic eastern european. I would say that is probably the best guess. Or since he is in a fictional city, why can't he be from a fictional country? It seems that the information we have right now is all spliced together from different cultures. Will it be like "The Terminal" starring Tom Hanks? He has a passport from one country, which is very similar to his native country, he says different words in different languages etc.
