I've never really understood the concept of landscape photography with the nifty fifty. Those two things just don't fit in the same sentence for me. It's great for portraits and stuff, though, but I've been thinking about changing mine to a 35mm so I don't have to take my photos ten meters from my subject. Thoughts?

Yeah the 50mm lenses are just so great when it comes to bang for buck. They're so cheap and can be very sharp and give nice results for the price. For low light, portraits and shallow DOF, they are fantastic but for landscapes, I wouldn't even consider a 50mm. I would use it, if that's all I had and I have been in that situation where it's all I had and I'm guessing that's why most people would use them for landscape: necessity/no choice.

Up until recently I've been using a 40mm pancake as my main lens. It's priced slightly more than the 50 but it's very sharp and you can get wonderful results. It gives you all the fun benefits of a 50mm but the extra 10mm is so worth the 40 or 50 bucks extra. Using it exclusively as my main lens, it forced me to make the best of it in all situations and I can say it's versatile. To give you context, I mostly used it in low-light, nightclub stuff but for street photography and portraits, I would rated it highly. I also used it for a little bit of video. However, for video, it's much more work as you would expect.

Here's a recent example of it I may have posted these before, so apologies in advance. (on a Canon 6D)

I wanted to ask a question: Can heat effect the speed of lenses like the EF50mm? Yesterday I was out shooting in Austin and it was reportedly 106 degrees out. I kept trying to focus on a car and the lens kept focusing in then out then quit. Press again, does same thing. Then eventually it got the shot. It's definitely been quite slow as of lately and that can be annoying when you want to get pictures of moving subjects.

Can heat effect the speed of lenses

Yes, absolutely and this is a perennial problem with DSLR camera lens which react to heat, heat haze and radiated heat as a focal source; a problem never encountered with analogue 35mm SLRs that only recognise light source.

Gig photos for Rubberbandits? Nice.

How come 40mm rather than the much more common 35mm?

You know who they are, thanks man. :)

I just seen it for sale secondhand and it was in perfect condition. I was also curious to try a "pancake" lens. I actually haven't come across many 35mm to be honest. You did mean 35mm prime?

I shot a concert last week and realized my camera (a 700D or Rebel T5i) does not perform well enough at low light. I can hardly go to ISO 800 without the image getting almost intolerably grainy.

That being said I'm thinking about upgrading and the 6D is looking like a pretty solid option. The fun thing is of course that it's a full frame camera which obviously means that I'd have to change all my lenses as well, save for my nifty Sigma fifty which works on APS-Cs as well as full frames.

I checked with a store and I should be able to trade the 700D and my two other lenses (10-18mm and the 18-55mm kit lens) to a barely used 6D with a 3K shutter count.

While that's definitely an intriguing idea it would mean that the only lens I'd be left with would be a 50mm prime - a very nice lens, sure, but not really one to shoot landscapes - like I mostly do - with. And I'm probably not going to be making any money at all for a while so it would be a semi permanent problem.

Is anyone using a 50mm prime on a full frame? Think it can pull off landscapes?

Smoky Tree Sun Rays

Here are photographs that I have taken using my Motorola Moto G⁴ mobile phone camera.

I visited my local park a few months ago to have a barbecue with a couple of family members.

During my time there, I managed to photograph a couple of stunning shots of the sun shining through the trees amongst the barbecue smoke.

There are portrait and landscape orientation captures of it.

My advice would be to quickly upgrade to a full-frame as soon as possible. Don't worry about not having a wide lens to begin with. Having the full frame will give you a much wider angle to begin with. Your 50mm on a crop sensor is around 75mm and then having your 50mm on a full-frame will be true 50mm as I know you know.

3K shutter count on the 6D is great. There's always going to be a time when you upgrade to full frame and then you start off from the bottom again with lenses. I did it. I only wish I did it sooner. I was stuck with a 40mm as I mentioned above for about year. It was the cheapest, widest glass I could afford at the time. But you know what, it was the best choice I ever made. I think you're better off with one 50mm lens and a full frame rather than a cropped sensor with more lenses.

You'll build a collection up again. Next lens I would recommend would be the superb all-rounder 24mm-70mm. You can get a used one for around €300 (Sigma).

But yeah, 50mm on a full frame will give you superb results. It's not wide but being "restricted" to one lens like a 50 is great discipline, it forces you to think out of the box, to think on your feet, to improvise and overcome. It forces you to be solution-driven. When you can go with wider lenses again, it's amazing. It's like using wide-angles again for the first time.

If you need to go a little wider, like my earlier post, try go for the 40mm. It's sharp, light (pancake lens, smaller than the 50mm) and it's cheap. You can sell your 50mm for maybe €50-100 depending on it's condition w/box etc. Put it towards a used 40mm. Here's one used for €129. I tried to look for Amazon.fi but it redirects to the German Amazon. I guess they do Finland.

https://www.amazon.de/gp/offer-listing/B0089SWZDU/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

Also, regarding the 6D. I regularly shoot night/gig stuff going up to 1600 and even 2000 ISO.

This is the unedited quick shot I took on my phone, I took more on my DSLR but I was running around my street trying to find the sun. I don't normally take photos like this but I didn't want to miss it. I've never seen anything like it.

Great photo man. Such a cute cat. The fact that the lemons form a little arch and the dirt trail fades off in to the background is really sweet. The only thing I would change (and it could be just my monitor) is that the image seems a little blue-ish with hints of magenta.

I don't know if this is any better. Forgive my arrogance for going ahead and doing this but I do really like the photo.. I just removed some magenta and warmed the photo of a little and adjusted the levels, darks a little darker, lights a little lighter. My monitor is a bit off so it could look a bit more dramatic than I hoped for.

Not my best work but something I'm quite happy about. I decided to use Autogespot again seeing as I got a lot of pictures of quite possibly one of my favorite cars Friday and wanted to post the bulk of them rather than reserving one just for Flickr/IG. Autogespot kind of blends photography with car spotting so I think it's right for me. Sometimes focusing on getting just one good picture is boring, I want to capture the subject from every angle and that gets me thinking. I need to do photoshoots. Anyways, here is the link:

Tried blending architecture with the car, not sure about the reflections but otherwise I like it:

24343592468_cccba7e84e_h.jpg

I definitely prefer making the car smaller in the frame now though. Honestly got tired of the "samey" look I'd always get when I was closer to the car. In cases where I do get closer, I'm considering doing something like getting low on the ground of raising the camera high up.

Edit: Anotha' one. Yeah I have to say this more "proper" way of taking pictures following rule of thirds is working for me.

My Flickr page, if anyone is interested:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/

If you have any advice or recommendations, feel free to help! Here are some of my more "artsy" shots:

25654731448_93ed0c5aab_o.jpg

Admittedly I've gotten a bit lazy, ever since the Centenario shot back in September (which forced me to create a newer and better editing style), I've been using the same self-made preset since and have only adjusted it accordingly. I need to get back into experimenting with editing and changing my style. Still trying to do better work behind the camera though. But still, I look back at when I first got my 50mm and posted here and can't help but gawk at the improvement. Here's to hoping I can make some even bigger improvements for 2018!

Also, I still haven't really taken pictures of anything but cars. Sucks, I know. I really need to get out there and take architectural and nature shots.

I tried my hand at photography for the first time in real life, after taking photos in games for so long. These were taken on my Samsung Galaxy S8+, so no professional equipment like many might have. I would love feedback and tips on how I could improve!
