Astronomers say asteroid could hit Mars

Recommended Posts

4) The asteroid will ultimately destroy Mars, hurtling large debris towards us, that will create not quite catostrophic damage.

If it destroyed Mars, the whole Solar System would become f*cked, wouldn't it?

Not really, the worst that could happen is that we would have most of our population screwed and a smaller asteriod belt where Mars used to be will exist.

Unless it's the sun, the destruction of a planet does not alter the entire system.

not accurate. Our entire solar system is intricately dependant upon any other part of itself.

We are affected by things we are only just now seeing, that are so far away it has taken

30+ years for photos to return to us from probes.

We are affected by everything.

It depends what you are talking about. When Mars is completely destroyed, and chunks of mile-long debris with dead martians hurtle towards us that can threaten our civilization; yes it affects us.

But to the other planets- it ain't sh*t. All they get a some "flesh-wounds" at most...

Well, you should consider how the sudden lack of a planet might effect the orbit of other planets. I'm sure NASA can pulls some math about it out of their ass, whenever I watch a show about the early solar system they babble on about how one planet blew up and then threw off all the other's orbit.

Frankly I like to take it all with a grain of salt considering I'll never see any of it.

That's true.

The requirement of an asteroid to be capable to destroy an entire planet similar to our size, actually smaller, than it would prolly screw us too.

But an asteroid only 160 ft long is most likely not gonna do anything...

That's true.

Oh, I thought you were talking about IF it just happened to destroy Mars. Yeah, it will probably be a big flash for us. If we were there though, it would have the force of a couple of thousand nuclear blasts.

Rough times for the Martians.

Okay, check this our planet has many defenses from most astroids. The moon is our biggest one, then we have this nice atmosphere which burns up most the smaller ones and even some of the larger ones.

Astroids have struck earth many times before with little effect, note the 1908 astriod that almost struk siberia, it was the size of a house and it burned up in the sky.

2 I highly doubt a 164-ft wide astroid will do much damage to mars. The astroid that is belived to of hit earth in the age of dinosaurs is thought to of been 7 miles wide.

I understand that because mars has no atmosphere it will have a larger effect than if the astroid hit earth, but it won't be planet threatening.

@ Tryst- well said! icon14.gif

@ derty- lol.gif Silly Rabbit...

yes. but mars is SO MUCH bigger than earth...

Mars is around the size of our core. icon14.gif

And 160 feet? big deal. I doubt it'll do much beyond a semi-large blast that puts another small scar on an already dead planet.

Even at 160 meters it'd be far from something that would kill a planet. There's a huge difference between what it would take to kill us if Earth were hit, and what it would take to damage a whole planet.

I'm still too lazy to look it up, but some of the ones that hit Jupiter in the 90's were estimated to be about 2 kilometers long.

There's also a huge difference between Mars and Jupiter, but eh.

You make Mars sound like an Emo Planet! lol.gif

We all learn something new!

Mars does have an atmosphere, it's just that it is much thinner than Earth's atmosphere.

[Edit]

"On November 20, 2007, NASA researchers have detected asteroid 2007 WD5 that has an estimated 1 in 75 chance of impacting Mars on 30 January 2008 around 10:55 UT. [100] If the asteroid is indeed on a collision course, it would hit Mars with a velocity of about 13.5 km/s (8.4 miles per second), and would produce an explosion equivalent to about 3 megatons of TNT. The asteroid is thought to be similar to the one which hit Tunguska in 1908."

Atmosphere of Mars

The atmosphere on mars is so small it is virtually non existent compared to some of the other planets.

There are no words to describe how dumb that sounds.

No need to say anything then...

I just f*ckin' hope it doesn't destroy mars.

Because it's our last resort for life. I mean,we're all out of petrol, nearly out of water.

NASA MUST SEND DEM PROBEZ!

Titan is better suited for life than mars silly.

if by suited for life you mean full of methane and completely uninhabitable, then yeah

totally suited.

Yup, because Mars has plentiful supply of both of those.

@SYN, he was comparing, not saying its possible. Silly goose.

Yeah, but can't they start sending vegetation to Mars,so it gains an atmosphere after a few hundred years.

Also,Why don't they make Nuclear-Powered space shuttles, their fuel supply would last for years.

Hardly-stable power put into a ship with humans: hmm......

Vegetation? If a bio-dome or something was placed, then plants would be possible. But I don't think any governement has the patience and time to fund a project just so Mars can have some tomatoes.

Huge money would be made though: Veggie Tales in Space

By suited I mean a fully developed atmosphere and the potential for fully liquid water.

If I have my seasonal tilt for earth right earth's north pole would be leaning towards the direction the astroid is comming from. Thus giving it a higher chance of hitting up in one of the norther areas (like siberia), making the effect of the impact less noticable on the population. Considering the size is almost the same as the one that hit siberia in 1908 it will likley burn up before it hits the ground thus causing a large flash, some heat and a whole lot of wind. wow.gif

edit, maybe not the same size it seems the estimate for the tunguska astroid was anywhere from 50 meters to 1200 meters.
