Online multiplayer talk

Well i was hoping gta4 online would be more like SA-MP (without the crashes and the cheaters and all the bugs) what i mean is it would be cool to have like 100 people in 1 server and people could walk around with there official gangs holding areas and things. i remember i use to play in littlewhites and i was in a gang that use to hold "ammunation" anyone that went there ended up diying, it was really fun. but R* announced that it will not be a MMOG. im guessing its going to be cops vs gangs. 10 on 10 in different maps, that would be kinda boring.

I really have no idea what multiplayer is going to be like. But no way is it going to be 100 people in one game lol.gif

lol Major lag right there. The multiplayer is HOPEFULLY fun. That SA multiplayer(not online) was shocking. Really boring actually. So I hope they bring in some good features, gameplay for online as well. That's what will keep the game going.

For thsoe of you who played Crackdown, the online part of that game was a lot of fun, as long as you didn't run into someone with a really bad connection. Having something like that implemented in GTA:IV, just with more than 2 players at the same time (say, 2-8 at the same time?) would be tons of fun. Then again, having 8 players going nuts with explosives downtown NY/LC would probably result in tons of lag too..

Gang/Team-Based Multiplayer

Overview-

I think the whole territory idea would work well. it would be between a certain amount of player created gangs (first come, first create).

gang themes would be created such as custom cars that spawn in that gang's area for corresponding members to drive, gang uniforms (mob suits, cartel jerseys, gangster colors, gang tattoos...), a central stronghold, etc.

players entering after gangs have been created can either join whatever gang, or attempt to take over. when starting, you customize your character, and when joining a gang, you make the according changes .

Player details-

as players play on, physical traits like stamina, skills, or hardiness (damage taken from attacks) rise, but very, very slowly, and have a limit (no indestructible players). skill will be an integral part of this but the founders of these gangs and loyal players of this game need some sort of reward. possible to have stats brought from saved game (unless codes have been used in game, then saves can't be used online for content devil.gif ). Players from other gangs or other servers can be "invited" to join, but switching gangs often messes with your stats.

territory can be stolen in San Andreas-style gang wars, increasing a gang’s influence over the map, police force, and local businesses.

JOBS- a gangsta’s gotta eat, right? these are jobs that can be given to players by the gang leader, or just other gang members. dealing is strictly a volunteer thing. Pay depends on how long you have had the job, if you do poorly at it, or by bonuses given by the employer. On top of this all jobs very slowly earn money out of the employers pockets/bank accounts while online. Jobs can be quit at any time, but messes with your status.

1. Gang-related- Businesses will pay you for protection, and pay goes to the gang leader and designated protectors, who will be alerted to protect the business in need by a flashing headline on their screen. All businesses that can offer gangs money or any type of assistance will be able to be robbed, hence the need for protection. When a business has been robbed or messed with, the protecting gang will not receive all or any of their protection money. If it happens enough, a business will seek another gang for protection.

2. Dealers- Some players will be able to be drug dealers or sellers, and will make their money this way. First, regularly, a shipment of the drugs will come in by boat or whatever. The drugs will be sold first come-first-served by gram/kilogram until the whole shipment has been sold, or time has run out (the shipment arrives and leaves at very strictly set timelines, and only stays for a minute or two, hence the need to get there first. To keep people from camping out at the location, it changes constantly, only being announced a minute or two before arrival). Once a player has purchased their drugs, they can sell them to peds or other gang members (the drugs will provide temporarily elevated strength, speed, and hardiness, the duration depending on how much is taken. However, the amount that can safely be taken is never quite the same and depends on hunger, health, energy etc. too much will result in blacking out). A dealer can be killed to steal a % of his stash, the % dependent on the killer’s status, or whether they too are a dealer. Ex.- a dealer will get more from a kill than a hired driver or bodyguard.

Benefits- allows certain unlocked options for any employees

3. Bodyguards- Bodyguards can be hired by pretty much any body who can pay, but are obviously meant for the richer or simply more needy-of-protection like dealers (to keep their stash n’ cash from being stolen, gang leaders, or just people protective of their wealth. They can stalk their employer’s shadows or be alerted when the employer sends an alert by selecting a “protection” option. Can also be hired to protect places or things, in which alerts will be assigned automatically during robbery, destruction, etc.

Benefits- being a bodyguard opens up options such as guns not readily available to others, and discounts on guns and armor

4. Driver’s- driver’s can be assigned to do what their name implies for the people listed above. They can be supplied to get high profile, rich, or just players that seem to have lots of enemies out of messy situations. If employed by a dealer, deals can take place within the safety of a moving car. Bodyguards or other rider’s can lean out of windows to free-aim and fire at pursuers like cops or rival gangs. As skills go up, weapons like grenades and RPG’s can be used in this manner. Other than people, driver’s can be used to transport goods, and can be paired with one or more bodyguards to help. Can also transport goods for businesses in 18 wheelers

Example- when money is stored out of pocket, it takes up physical space in safes or rooms in houses. It can, however, be taken to a bank to be laundered and stored, which will have to be done regularly for the better-off gangs or dealers. Driver’s will be provided an armored car to transport the money in. if the armored car explodes, all the money will be destroyed, hence the need for somebody exceptional for the job. Yes, armored cars can be hijacked, and cleaned out of their money.

Benefits- Becoming a driver opens up options such as free car repair, cheaper car modding, and unlocks vehicles not readily available to others (armored cars/trucks/limos, super-powerful/fast cars, etc.)

5. Gang Leaders- these are the ones responsible for “managing” the gang. For every member in their gang, they earn a tiny % of what each of their members earn (3-5%?), and receive a tiny amount just for having them there. They also earn a small sum of money for each % of the map they control, and another small sum for every business in their territory, and business that pays for protection. They in turn are responsible for the upkeep of the Gang’s Stronghold, a kind of group safe house.

They can purchase weapons and different grades of body armor that respawn in holds in the stronghold (there’s a limit for how much ammo and guns a member can grab per day), they can pay to have garages that fix member cars for free, update uniforms, and gang vehicles, which are basically cars modded with special options unlocked by being a leader. They will display the gang’s mark (again, made by the leader). These cars will spawn around the stronghold and in the gang’s area. If the leader doesn’t keep the gang members happy, obviously the gang will revolt, switch gangs (affecting leader income), or will try to replace the leader. Obviously the more members there are, the more expensive it is to supply guns, armor and cars for them. Each of these options will cost the leader per day, uniforms being relatively cheap, guns, armor and cars being very to incredibly expensive.

(I like this part)

The POLICE- the police will be treated as a gang as well, and will be able to be joined. For them, territory claimed is neutral, and instead of competing in races, they try to arrest as many racers as possible. The more neutral territory there is, the more money officers make for being online/on the job, and all arrests create a bonus. Since there probably won’t be many people who would want to follow the straight and narrow in a GTA, as usual in these games, the cops won’t all be squeaky clean either. Cops who arrest/knockout/kill gang members get (as usual) a % of their money, the guns and ammo they wish to pick up, as well as all of their drugs if they choose to grab them. All officers will get a sum of money every time they take care of a criminal, or come to a fellow officer’s aid. As an officer does well over time, they will have a choice of promotions to earn. However, going long between arrests lowers your stats within the station and lowers points for promotion. enough of this or mistakes like friendly-fire, and you will be fired and pronounced a criminal.

Being Radioed - When a gang-member commits a crime, a headline will appear on all officer’s screens until it has been selected by a number of officers proportional to the seriousness of the crime and rank and stats of the criminal. Crimes ranging 1-6 stars = 1-10 officers (with CPU back-up), always with an option to call in for more backup. Organized gang races will trigger this system likewise. However, once a gang race is completed, all acquired stars disappear until a new crime is committed. More money is given to an officer who takes down a criminal depending on the criminal’s stats, more money for a higher profile kill.

Example- once an officer reaches a certain career level, they can get a pay raise in their current position, move from a street unit to a S.W.A.T. member, S.W.A.T. unit to an F.B.I agent, or move to the army base and become a member of the GTA Army from an FBI position.

Benefits- All benefits that apply can be picked up at the station- all officers will be able to grab patrol cars from the station, and weapons that they have unlocked. Police-type vehicles will all be locked towards non-lawmen/women at station, and will only be able to be stolen through specialized Breaking & Entering.

At street cop level, a uniform, squad car, nightstick, pistol, and shotgun are readily available. Eventually, Colt 45 will be available.

At S.W.A.T. level, a uniform, armored truck, machine gun, S.P.A.S. shotgun, teargas, and basic armor are readily available. Eventually a S.W.A.T. Tank will be available.

At F.B.I. agent level, uniform, F.B.I. car and SUV, advanced machine gun, S.P.A.S. shotgun, sniper rifle, advanced armor. Eventually F.B.I. Cheetah will be available.

At GTA Army level, uniform, Barracks OL, M4, M60, Barret XM109 Sniper Cannon, grenades, and State-of-the-art body armor. Eventually RPG’s will be available

Gang supremacy-

gangs will compete for supremacy in various ways besides territory, there will be massive team races, teams of 2 or maybe 4 people per gang to aid each other in races (drive-bys and killing are allowed tounge.gif ). cars can be switched in race, dying in car respawns car and player. normal traffic will be about to keep things interesting, and interference from other gang members not in the race is allowed (these will be the most intense races EVER!) it would be interesting if a 2nd person could be allowed to ride and shoot or drop grenades while the other drives

also, there will be the always-fun gang-wars. people who kill their own gang-members will be penalized, and will have their Good-Will Meter for that gang go down. once these meters get to a certain point, they will have a bounty on their heads which other players can collect if they either kill them, or kidnap them alive. bringing them in alive results in bonus, but requires tying up, knocking out or something. Good-Will Meters basically operate like on Mercenaries; the more from one gang you kill, the worse off you are to them, but the better off you are to yours.

killing members of other gangs earns you status points in your gang, which raises your position in the gang's Hierarchy. being higher on the chain means getting a little more attention from cops, and growing discounts (as your level rises to the top) on all you may buy, unless it's from other players online. also, the higher you are, the more money you get for your kills, side missions, or time online (like a job).

to make money more precious, a food system like San Andreas will be employed. gyms require payments for usage, or a membership thingy. the effects of working out for speed, stamina, or strength all take much longer than in San Andreas. cars, weapons, paint jobs, car mods (now including armor hopefully) can all be bought, as well as houses/apartments/warehouses, which can be bought, rented and sold between players to house their stuff, which can be dropped off here to avoid losing in case of death (extra money, weapons, etc). of course, houses will be robbable, so it might be wise to invest in safes

If a person dies on their own, they drop a certain % of their money, which is able to be grabbed by other players. Dying by the hand of another person will result in them dropping a % of their money proportional to the killer’s status. rewards can be offered for special protection (say a #1 doesn't want to lose his spot to a #2 in an assassination, he/she can give "raises to other online players to guard the stronghold, or pay them to be bodyguards)

gangs can be switched, but this lowers your Good-Will with the dropped gang. Overall status ratings given out cross-reference kills on other gangmembers, times switched from other gangs, # of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd places in races, deaths, etc

Arcade Style Multiplayer

Hit List- people take turns being the "marked man". Points are awarded for how long survived as the "marked man", and for kills of the marked man. Amount of times whole group gets to be marked man is toggled in menu as is the option to be teleported randomly when selected as "marked man".

Hit List #2- who ever kills the most marked characters wins (marked characters are all comp. controlled). like high end politicians in their guarded penthouse suites 59 stories up, or running around in armored convoys. killing each other may help out, but doesn't give points

Demolition Derby- however many people roam the sreets trying to kill the other players in anyway possible without leaving their vehicles. vehicles can be switched, but kills can only be made while in the vehicle. (drive-bys count) possible 2-player co-op (one drives, one shoots out window or from back of truck, and so on using any weapons)

Racing- would pretty much just be demolition derby, but everybody's going in the same direction tounge.gif

And one of my personal favorites...

Taxi Run- players compete in taxis for customers, of which there are one at a time. having a customer in the car slowly earns cash, once destination is reached, a bonus is received for time passed. cabs can be attacked, when cab emits black smoke, passenger bails. killing passenger in car or running over creates penalty. passenger can be stolen after they bail. whoever has most $ after however many passengers (chosen before-hand) wins. Cab insignias can be chosen or imported for players at multiplayer menu

Protect the Principal!!!- Escort mission. start off in armored limo, can switch vehicles (if you can get the Principal into the other car alive). however many players try to kill Principal in any way possible-throwing grenades or shooting RPG's from street corner, ramming/drive-bying, or teaming up Demo Derby style. when sombody loses, a randomly next person has to do the protecting until all have done it. winner is the one whose "Principal" survived longest. Principal may be Computer player or a person

Hold the Fort- Capture the flag game where teams of 6 protect their flag while trying to get the other team's from randomly chosen forts, once again, penthouse suites, warehouses, ships, etc. Or, take turns with one team guarding their flag while the other team tries to steal it, cross-referencing time lasted with # of kills to other team for points. Once player with flag is killed, flag remains there to be picked up by either team to be returned or re-stolen. both flags must be present for game to end. Optional- multiple flags; only one flag may be carried at a time, stolen flag may be dropped to grab own flag, to carry and hide, or return to base, or each additional flag slows player or slowly drains life

Police Chase- one player is a cop, must bring other player's car a to stop. cops re-spawn in cop cars if they die, or they lose their car for more than 10 sec. criminals can switch vehicles, or re-spawn in random cars if out of car for 10 sec. possible multiple cops, multiple criminals, or both. once one person catches or is caught, either roles switch, or caught player is out until all players are caught. Or, caught players become cops to assist other player in catching. points gained by cross-referencing time and catches .

guess where this idea came from:

Absolute Chaos- players try to fill Mahem Meter first by killing things, wrecking stuff, etc. if a player dies, they must start over. killing player earns meter bonus. start with limited, identical weapons.

Most importantly, ALL multi-player games should have optional computer-players to raise amount of opponents or team members

Baest of all...

Fully Customizable Deathmatches- Anybody ever played Worms World Party, or Worms Armageddon for PS1? they could take a few cues from them like deciding what weapons players start out with and how much of each, and adjusting the strength of the weapons (one hit kills with a machine gun, grenades that can toss a Trashmaster 50yds, RPG's that take about 6 hits to make a kill, etc). it would be interesting to have a 16-player Deathmatch with only baseball bats.

other options that affect game strategy like making a persons life start to drain depending how far they are from the action, or the opposite (to encourage either full out head-to-head wars, trap-setting or long-distance sniping). the same life-draining system could be used if they get in/out of cars. oh yes, almost forgot, manual aim option with auto-aiming on all weapons like on GTA SA, or an option to disable either manner of targeting.

as for combat areas, maybe an option could be to highlight an area of the map by clicking (pressing X) and dragging the controller icon to select an area the proper size or at the desired place, selecting a building, or leaving the whole map open.

there could also be a random area chooser option where the organizing player(s) choose an area size, and area type;

Indoor (abandoned hosp, stadium, skyscraper roof or interior, a mansion or car-park as mentioned earlier)

Urban/Suburban (anywhere in LC not listed pretty much)

and Special (on a flying plane , in the middle of a riot w/police and rioters, an almost empty secret army installation, yacht, etc).

or everything could be randomized. Special arenas can be chosen whenever, other places are just randomly selected areas of the map.

Teams can be picked as mismatched as desired, with as many or as few teams as wanted, or, people could be spawned at random places on the whole map and search and destroy.

A ccokie to anybody who read this!!! But just take one... cookie.gifcookie.gifcookie.gif

A lot of text.

Read through all that, and I have to say that your first idea was great, but not realistic at all. Would be too much for someone to host, and would require dedicated servers. Plus I believe R* said they wouldn't have an MMO-style online-mode.

wow you put a lot of thought into it. lol well done, anyway im sure theres gonna be different game modes (capture the car, last man, death match) i think. i just dont want it to be something like call of duty modern warefare, were you play for a few weeks and level up and get bored.

i'd like to roam around the whole city with friends instead of been put in a small map

If we can just roam around the city with friends and cause trouble etc it will be very fun indeed. Also games modes such as death match, last man standing, rat race. Cannot wait for this game seriously.

Haha, I'm just pictioning the pilot flying low over a rooftop and slamming all the ones clinging onto the landing gear into the edge of the roof. That'd be just too fun.

But the pilot will probably get quite a few negative reports, unless the ones that got slammed into the building has a sense of humour.

Online is confirmed, we just don't know what we'll be able to do.

But I'd like to see some (team) deathmatch, and of course 2-8 player free-ro.am through LC.

Already been done I think but:

I'd love a terratories (sp?) game, where opposing teams battle for key points..

Search and destroy - one team has to defend an item (car/briefcase/VIP etc) from the other team

Hide and seek type - fight 1 on 1 against another person, but in a crowd of peds, sharps eyes and a keen wit would bring you victory!

Errmm, running out of ideas now to be fair... I would love there to be a massive multiplayer thing, like with hundreds of players, but I don't know what you would do, it would be chaos - plus the fact that R* have said it won't be a "massive" thing, and I doubt it could handle it.

I played Halo 3 with three friends on Legendary, there's no way I could have done it on my own.. and I liked it alot more playing with others than I would have on my own.

I don't really play single player games too much now, Ass. Creed and Dead Rising have just sat there looking sorry for themselves (they come alive at night you see) while Call of Duty 4, Fifa 08 and PGR4 have been sat there looking all smug and laughing at the single player games..

So, all in all and after a lot of deep thought, it would totally f*cking rock my beige socks to be able to play as Niko and my best friend to play as Roman or whoever..

But I doubt it'll happen.
