Abolishing join dates

Before anybody starts having a go at me, this topic is for discussion, it is not a suggestion.

This has been rather relevant lately with all the flame wars going on in Gen Chat, and it is evident that quite a number of forumers seem to be determining the credibility of somebody by their join by date rather than the content of their post. Whilst it is obvious that there are many 07ers making posts that contribute nothing to this forum, that is not the case with all of us.

Its also apparent that older members also seem to get away with doing things that 07ers would get warned/banned for, and making topics that would most probably be locked if an 07er created it.

So, if we could please keep it friendly, I would like to hear some of your opinions on this matter.

Most members are "flamed" according to their post content not their join date. If you haven't noticed willgtavcs, californian and elijah, have no concept of basic english and are therefore torn a new asshole and will hopefully learn 2 stop typin lyk dis and include relevant content.

Yeah, I agree with this idea.

While we're at it, someone should make a hack that automatically makes certain member's posts less completely f*cking retarded.

That, or you know, people could take the interwebs a bit less seriously, whatever is easiest.

I could have joined in 2000 and then not posted till yesterday so a join date says nothing about the person...content is what matters

Well post-count was removed in an attempt to bring flaming and like to a minimum but I think the join dates should remain as a bit of a sentiment to that member and their contribution.

Edit: I suppose contribution is a bad way to phrase it, and I understand and would agree if the join dates were removed from the side-panel.

You must remember that English is not every member's first language.

And if you look in some of the recent topics, you will see a number of '07er' taunts and references, which if what you are saying is true, wouldn't be brought up in the first place.

@ Hayden: So you are sayng that join date shows how much a member has contributed?

It's the same basic principle on any forum.

Personally I think people cop it, for like Sauron. said, content in their posts.

I don't know how much ground I can stand on, because I haven't been here that long myself, but I think that is the reason.

It's not like we have a flaming epidemic. It's just Widowmaker and Toga62 getting riled up at people who tell unfunny jokes, act like tools, or call them out. It's ironic because neither of them are capable of making funny jokes themselves.

All in all, it makes for some interesting e-drama.

Medals are awarded to those who have made significant contributions and I feel that's the best and only way a person should be judged, however, people do use join dates as an excuse.

"Dear GTAForums," part, II (shortly I suppose).

The join dates have been a pretty critical part of the forums history over the years. Yes, there has been some criticism about bitching over join dates and jumping to conclusions, but they have been around since the beginning. It's a sort of joy as well, or distaste for others.

On a contrast to Sip's post, is it possible the Admins can shout at us in big letters at the top of the page for a little bit? Get the sh*t in order? Just a little thought, seems to work in Network Support.

But yes, the Internet is really only a form of entertainment, people!

Yes, that person makes a good point, it's a pity very little seem to comprehend it.

Heh, quite the contrary as I've seen you have your fair share of bitching on a number of topics, as well as the # of f-bombs you drop are as many as WidowMaker throws out. confused.gif

The term is hypocritical. icon14.gif

Not to say that I'm enforcing this person's opinion, I'm merely correcting them.

Internet.

Serious Business.

Anyway, every forum that I see has the person's join date displayed, but it is the content of one's posts that make all the difference, not the join date.

Thanks for your past 3 useless replies, Hayden Stasven is case in point as to why members are judged on post content. Even if he had joined in 02 we would still think he is a moron smile.gif

Well, all the 07'ers can embrace one thing, is the fact that it is less than 10 days until 08'ers fall victim to jokes...

I'd say this basically requires a lock here in a second. Everybody needs to go outside and enjoy the fresh air for a bit, or jerk off, or whatever the hell it is you do for fun.

I don't think I take the interwebs seriously enough.

You take it too seriously

Don't worry. I don't take your posts seriously.

So...is anybody else going to put forward a valid idea to why join dates should/shouldn't be kept? Or are we all going to start paying out elijah?

Has the Gen Chat ever been decent or have you always been paying out others for 'making it worse/crappy'? I've only been around since 2005 so I'm not really sure.

I don't think the joining dates matter. The thing that matters is the intelligence of your post, and how you act.
