New PC

Hello,

Well I've decided to look into buying a new gaming PC, and have been trying to get the best price to power ratio and I would like to see what some of the more experienced PC builders would have to say about my decisions on parts.

5 general questions:

1.) Are all of these parts compatible?

2.) Am I getting the best deal?

3.) Are all of these parts I selected quality parts?

4.) Am I missing any necessary parts/buying more parts than necessary? (other than DVD-ROM I have a spare one)

5.) Do any of these things come with cables (SATA etc.) or do I have to buy those separately too?

Ok, now for the parts I chose:

Case: Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

Hard Drive: SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Video Card: EVGA 512-P3-N802-A1 GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

Sound Card: Creative 70SB046A00000 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series - Retail

Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC ATX 430W Power Supply - Retail

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA804 - Retail

Mobo: ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor Model BX80557E6600 - Retail

OS: Microsoft Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate for System Builders Single Pack DVD - OEM

The Grand Total I have so far is: $1,360.91 USD

All help is appreciated thanks in advance smile.gif .

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. You should get an nVidia SLI motherboard so you can pair 2 GeForce 8800GT's together in the future. Also, the power supply sucks. 430W is not enough. Get 600-800 watts.

4. You are missing a DVD+RW dual/double layer with LightScribe disc burner. LG/Samsung are good brands.

5. Use some of the parts from your old computer.

Hmm well from what I've read SLI isn't really all that cost-effective except when you run at much higher res I'll probably be using 1360x768.

As for the PSU I have heard that amperage on the +12v rail (whether it's dual or single) is what really matters and isn't 18 amps sufficiant?

I already said that I have a spare DVD-ROM drive I will use for now to save money, besides I can just switch my lightscribe drive out from my old PC.

As for the cables and stuff I plan on keeping the old PC running so I can't use them from it.

The 430W PSU is just over the recommended amount, as it says on EVGA's site. http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=512-P3-N802-AR

It recommends 450W for SLi, and you may want to opt for it in the future, I'm sure that card's price will drop quite a bit in a year or two, and it might be cost effective to just toss another one in. So adding a little bit on the PSU will pay off in the long run, imo. I'd say go with at least a 500W PSU.

The E6600 should do you just fine, I've got one and I love it.

Could you (or someone) recommend me a good power supply and SLI board on newegg?

Also, would Vista 32-bit be better or even XP 32-bit? I think Vista because of DX10.

You are going to want to go with Windows Vista 32 or 64-bit. Microsoft might soon cancel support for Windows XP in the future like how they did with Windows 98-Me already.

Just buy a SLI motherboard that has SATA 3.0Gbps, FireWire, 4-8GBs of DDR2/3 RAM capable, and USB ports.

Just buy a power supply in the range of 600-700W

Decided to go with a WD drive because that Samsung seemed to have some bad reviews.

Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Anyway, more suggestions are still welcome.

EDIT: How about this power supply?

CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC Class B, TUV, CCC, C-tick - Retail

Would it fit in the case I selected?

And how about this mobo?

MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

BTW new price with these changes is $1,390.91

Would you like to have a WD Raptor X 10000RPM instead? If not, then go with your current choice.

CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX ATX12V v2.2 and EPS12V 2.91 520W Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CUL, CE, CB, FCC Class B, TUV, CCC, C-tick - Retail

Both the case and power supply are of the same ATX form factor, so it will fit.

MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

It supports SATA 2, has eSATA and RAID support, has SLI, and supports a max of 8GB DDR2 800 memory - so YES INDEED! biggrin.gif

Well...

Are you on budget?

Are you going to overclock any of the parts?

Anyways...

Tomshardware recently made a good article about budget PCs.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/09/17/sbm_low_cost_system/

Also, I suggest reading a few reviews/articles about PSUs before buying one... they can be one of the most important parts of a PC. And I can confirm it since I have seen plenty of them being toasted. I actually saw one blow up a few months ago.

Alright people thanks for the help and I've now bought all the parts except instead of an E6600 I got a Q6600.
