mudriy
From all trailers and screens we've seen so far, it's probably safe to assume that Russian Mafia are going to play an important part in GTAIV story. However, we've seen so many different characters, and came across so many different groups, that it is difficult to tell where and how Russian Mafia would fit in. Let's start by examining, what appears to be, our best evidence on this matter. Look at this screen. Niko and Roman have be detained by some nasty looking people. Also notice the face of the main interrogator - we shall come back to him later. The main focus point of this screen however, is the box on the right that reads "áîåïðèïàñû" (Boepripasi) - a Russian word for `Ammunition`. Could this suggest that the people who are holding Niko and Roman are Russian? And if so, then what are they looking for? Why do they have such a keen interest in Niko? Of course we can only speculate about these issues, but perhaps we can make some logical conclusions based on what we've seen in the third trailer. In it the guy pictured in the screen, asks Niko "Who are you working for?". That kind of question is unlikely to be asked by low key mobster, who was, say, trying to get Niko to pay back debts, for instance. Now, I don't know if any of you have noticed this, but the guy who hits Niko in the face with an AK-47 in this screen, looks suspiciously similar to Niko’s interrogator from the first screen. Maybe this scene shows how Niko got kidnapped? Let's continue to the next scene. I must say, this next scene is rather confusing for me. Have a look at this screen. It depicts the moment when Roman is attacked by, what I it at first thought to be, two Russian thugs. However, when one of them said “Where’s your Russian friend now, eh?”, I started to wonder. Could this mean that Roman has some Russian friends? Or maybe the thugs are referring to Niko, whom they believe to be of Russian? Notice that the guy in brown and white jumper, who has his arm around Roman’s throat, also makes an appearance here, here and here. Please share your ideas and suggestions. Fakey_91
All I know is that Russian Mafia will be heavily involved in the game. And it doesn't mean that Russians are after Niko. Infact, Niko is with the Russians - when the guy who kidnapped Roman says "Where is your Russian friend now??"
gta-evo4
Well, if Niko is "Russian" or eastern-european, it makes sense they would play an important role in the game. We'll see.
Lioshenka
Following the simple logic, all Eastern-europeans shold be together, at least here, all immigrants try to stay together and sort their things out together too. What if they came into Niko's warehouse and captured him that is why the boxes have got russian words on them?
Nutoi
This is NY....I think their will be a bigger mafia part played by the Italian Mafia due to the Broncs and all the Italian style advertisment seen on trailers like restraunts and so on.... You get lot of Russian advertisments, If anything the third trailer shows that GTAIV is more Russian than Italian.

Starion
Maybe, maybe. But wasn't Niko in a peace keeping force? The Balkan Peace Force, to be precise. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno.
YourNeighborhoodKiller
Off topic, But my cousin knows a little bit of Serbian since he was in the army and he had to learn it, and he said that when trailer 3 first starts, he said that Niko is speaking Serbian, and on one of the scenes of the trailer, when Roman is being held hostage, some guy says "wheres your Russian friend", so...Niko is either Serbian or Russian. Rick88
Maybe, maybe. But wasn't Niko in a peace keeping force? Yes, that is according to a preview a few weeks ago. It was said that he was in the Balkan Peace Force when he submitted a fake resume in that Goldberg mission. The whole thing was a "placeholder" though, so I'm not sure if that's still the case. However, the actual story, according to the first previews is that Roman was in debt to the Russian Mob which is why I think the Russian Mafia is messing with Niko and Roman. Infact, Niko is with the Russians - when the guy who kidnapped Roman says "Where is your Russian friend now??" I see no reason to suspect otherwise. At the moment it looks like Niko has given the russians the sh*ts. My current prediction is that Niko was working with the Russians and turned on them, perhaps with the government (although this is less likely). Now they have discovered Niko's trip to the states and want blood.
mudriy
Actually, If Roman was in debt to the Russian Mafia, It would make sense. Maybe that's what that guy was talking about when he said "So you're the guy that got dumped for a couple of million?" Maybe that's why they were trying to rob a bank in the second trailer. truthspitta
Check out this documentary: The History of the Russian Mafia Not Suitable for all ages Part 1/5 Part 2/5 Part 3/5 Part 4/5 Part 5/5 It talks about how the Russian Mafia moved to New York and set up a bases in Brighton Beach, Coney Island. Sounds pretty familiar if you ask me.
mudriy
yeah, that's why we saw so much Russian stuff in GTA version of brooklyn - its the home of russian mafia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brighton_Beach
ZaZ9291
Maybe, maybe. But wasn't Niko in a peace keeping force? The Balkan Peace Force, to be precise. That could have always been fake, though, Niko could have said that just to get the interview. I wouldn't be suprised if he is from Uzbekistan or one of those countries that were once part of the USSR.

chowdig
i think that the three main organized crime groups will each play a big role (Italian, Russian, and Irish) the guy in the trailer who says "So you're the guys who got (something) out of a couple million huh?" looks like the typical Italian Mafioso. We know the Russian mob is going to be significant based on the videos we have seen. And also the Irish mob has supposedly been confirmed (thank goodness! finally we get into the game!) I have got a uzbei friend who speaks english and he has got similar to russian accent - definately not the one like Niko has.
ilya
And also the Irish mob has supposedly been confirmed where did you read that? Look in this thread and download the audio files therein. What you'll find is two clips from the Opie & Anthony Show (guys who know Lazlow, and who got to work on GTA IV). One of the guys spills the beans on how he voices a character for the Irish Mob in GTA IV. On the second audio file, Lazlow calls the show and reminds the guys about the nondisclosure agreement they signed - Lazlow also says that GTA IV will be out in March. The two files are definitely worth downloading, if you're a big GTA fan that is! Edited December 9, 2007 by Supreme.
mudriy
Thank for that! So what do we have so far? Strong case for Russian Mafia, good evidence for Irish Mobsters and possible evidence for Italian Mafia (that guy in the third trailer that says "I'm not asking you, I'm telling you - Do this!" looks like an Italian Mafiosi). Typhus
The Serbs are probably the ones who held the knife to Niko. Serbian and Irish gangsters have worked together in NYC in the past. Maybe if I say this enough someone'll listen.
