I kinda hope they just stop running when they get damaged to a certain point. That would be more realistic. Say you have a head on collision at full speed. Once your car is at the light steaming it would start to maybe not perform as well and chuckle a bit (Like clanking noises coming from it) and when it gets a darker shade of steam coming from the engine it will slowly begin to shut off, maybe even a bar can appear before the engine dies or something. The best example is when there's a car flipped on its side in one scene and the firefighters run away from it. You can see a small fire outside the car that kind of looks like leaked gasoline on fire. Then the car blows up "realistically". Pure bliss....
