G MONEY $$$
I figured I would post an official topic since today the first screenshot was released by one up: Street Fighter IV UnveiledExclusive first ever screenshot and details for Capcom's franchise revival. By Matt Leone, 12/06/2007 Numbers are supposed to be impressive, right? Well, it's been 10 years, two hardware generations, and about seventeen thousand rumors since the last pure number Street Fighter came around. And today we have the first ever official details on Street Fighter IV. We don't blame you if your eyes have already skipped down to the screenshot lower on the page (yes, that's from the game engine). Take your time. But we've got some information as well, so the rest of this is probably worth reading when you get a chance. Though the screenshot doesn't answer this question outright, we can confirm that the game's graphics are polygonal but the gameplay is strictly 2D. There will be new moves, locations, and gameplay features, while the standard six button control scheme remains. Ryu and Ken return along with Chun-Li and Dhalsim, but beyond that the character roster is a mystery. And then there's the issue of what platform(s) the game will end up on, which at this point Capcom is keeping close to its chest (if you search 1UP's database, you'll find listings for arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but those are just guesses based on the graphical quality). For the full reveal of the game -- including hands-on impressions, a rundown of the new gameplay system, and loads of details on new features -- look for the January 2008 issue of EGM in stores soon and hitting subscribers any day now. And then after you check the issue out, keep your eye on 1UP's Street Fighter IV hub page for ongoing coverage continuing into January. Anyway, are you still reading this? Didn't you see the screenshot above? Click it and look at the larger version! All your friends are doing it... So this brings the 2D/3D speculation to an end. Looks like we'll have full 3D with strictly 2D gameplay. I'm pretty happy with that. A lot of fans seem to be against this but...I mean, if you're going to make a new Street Fighter on next-gen consoles I think it should something new, some innovation. Of course the old formula was great, but change is good. Can't wait to play this game. Meanwhile I need to get on Ebay and buy the original Street Fighter for SNES. Uno Carb
God, Capcom is never going to change those damned bigfoot feet. I've always thought they should try to make the characters more proportional. No more of this, little waist, giant chest, giant thighs crap. That new screen doesn't make me one bit excited. I hope to god that's not the actual engine. EDIT: It is the engine. f*ck this. Viruta Fighter still pwns hard and Tekken still sucks. G MONEY $$$
Personally I don't mind the look. It seems Street Fighter-ish and I think that's good. I can't say I'm an actual fan of the Street Fighter franchise (I only played the second one) but I still liked them and although I don't have the perspectives of a true fan I still think this will be a good fighting game. Creed Bratton
A 2D looking 3D game on next gen consoles? Looks to me like it could also be released for PS2 and PSP
Venom
I thrust my pelvis wildly at the notion of a new Street Fighter game. Wild like a perverted, mad man. Though, I'm not a big fan of the new logo, I can't help but think of how awesome this will be. If parries are turned up a notch in this.. it's own... well... more than it will own already... .... ... E.A.B.
God, Capcom is never going to change those damned bigfoot feet. while the standard six button control scheme remains. Well, at least they're doing several things right. 2D or 3D, sure but 6 buttons was a no question. You know, I was all for the 2D 2D 2D 2D. But looking at that screenshot, I don't know. I'm a believer that a Shoryuken would look bad in 3D. But that screenshot makes me think twice about it. Ryu looks somewhat like his SF3 incarnation, so I guess I'm happy. I hope they have the traditional endings though. You know, drawn with text. if you're going to make a new Street Fighter on next-gen consoles I think it should something new, some innovation. You say that as if 2D is some old washed up technology and sprites are useless in todays world and a sign of the old. Fighting games are still being made with Sprites. The only game I've played in 3D has been Mortal Kombat, so my opinion on this is garbage. But the only thing I've seen it add is sidestep. I don't consider that "inovational". The only thing I see it adding is pretty graphics and color. But I'll wait 'till I see it in action. I'm just glad to see there's a SFIV...or am I? What if it sucks? Eh, we'll see. A 2D looking 3D game on next gen consoles? It pleases both sides. Edited December 7, 2007 by E.A.B.
sofa_king
Game definitely looks cool and I kinda have to buy it just because I grew up on that game, but I'm anticipating soul caliber 4 more.
G MONEY $$$
As long as it's made by the same people I don't think there is anything to worry about in terms of the game not "feeling" like a Street Fighter game.
E.A.B.
I don't think there is anything to worry about in terms of the game not "feeling" like a Street Fighter game. That brings me to another point: The music. I really loved Third Strikes soundtrack. It made the game feel more "modern" if you know what I mean. You can forget that it comes from a video game and add it to your musical collection. I hope they can pull it off with SFIV's soundtrack. I really don't want them to go back to remixes of +15 year old tunes. You move forward with SFIII and then take a step backwards with SFIV? C'mon. It'd be fine as an unlockable though. Jazzy NYC '99 Really loved that song, Chun Li's was good also and that picture reminds me, I hope Alex makes it back. He was big like Zangief, but a ton easier to control, and faster. Uno Carb
All Street Fighter III was, was a bunch of rehashed old characters with new names, ethnic backgrounds and slightly different moves. None of which were as cool as their original predecessors. What a waste of a "III".
E.A.B.
None of which were as cool as their original predecessors. I'll give you the rehashed part (an obvious one being Necro=Blanka+Dhalsim), and I never really liked Remy cause...well, he's a... But Q is one of the better characters in the pack. But he was in SFII so I guess he doesn't count, plus, Balrog was never that great to begin with. and slightly different moves. Elena would like to have a word with you. E.A.B.
Yeah, I read about that yesterday Frankly, I refuse to believe that some Brazilian blog got new info before major publications. The destructoid article had more: The game takes place after Super Street Fighter II Turbo and before SFIII The good news is that the character roster will be made of many old-school brawlers We will probably not see any SFIII characters. Supers are there (although they didn't decide yet if it will be like in SSF2T or SFIII), and now they've put another moves called Ultras. These makes your character throws a auto combo with tons of moves. It's like a custom combo ... except by the custom part. The SFIII characters had pretty empty stories. I'd see this as an opportunity to expand upon their stories, like how Alpha did to some of the SFII characters. I can see the SFII characters there, and having some sort of closure and reason as to why they weren't in SFIII. But I hope it isn't basically another SFII iteration. Sequels are supposed to, you know, move forward. I'd hate yet another SFII iteration.
Ryuranger
EDIT: It is the engine. f*ck this. Viruta Fighter still pwns hard and Tekken still sucks. Damn right. Although think they could pull off a 3D looking 2D Game, They did it well with games like: New Super Mario Bros and Prince of Persia Classic ( On Xbox Live Arcade ), I haven't really seen much of those type of games. I really like the Idea though, Im sick of the Cartoon/2D Look of the game, A 3D look to it sounds like a great Idea.
E.A.B.
I'd hate yet another SFII iteration. and apparently, that blog was f*cking right. So lets recap: Blogeek stole an exclusive, Ziff brought the hammer down, Kotaku tried to stick up Blogeek, Ziff got angry at Kotaku for defending Blogeek and not searching for the whole truth, and the pictures and information are all over the place now including here at Destructoid. For the full article: Link Kotaku article f*ck f*ck f*ck this game. So it's just gonna be yet another rehash of SFII...but in 3D. God dammit I despise it now. Way to ruin it, asshole. I had my hopes up also. I thought they were done doing this more than 10 years ago. Well, nerd rage aside, it'll give the SFII characters closure. I'm just pissed that I'm gonna be playing SFII yet again. Actually, I don't really care for the story, it's a fighting game.
