Vortex Submarine

Very nice biggrin.gif

I see that you don't have to hold your breath and also that you got close to the Navy base in your first dive but were you close enough to have got any wanted stars? Have you tried going in to the Navy base?

If you did get the stars then all the police, FBI & soldiers would have fun trying to catch you while you were underwater - although it could be tricky for you when you surfaced if you're only in the hovercraft

Nice video Phreak, and great work on getting that other jump to trigger. I never tried from that angle. I kept hoping you'd show one of the underwater features of the chain game, but I suppose that would just add confusion.

BTW, in on of you other videos I noticed your nifty trick of dropping out of the parachute at the last second in order to maintain better control of CJ during his landing. I still forget occasionally, but I'm trying to add that technique to my regular bag of tricks and reflexes. Very cool. Sometimes I forget to comment, but I alway watch your vids for advanced techniques.

Tnx for the comments smile.gif

I actually discovered that the 2nd jump worked by accident.

I was using that ridge to quickly glide the Vortex back into the airport for another go, until I accidently hit it a bit too far to the left biggrin.gif

I used a regular save to show it works easily w/o cheats and mods.

But to anyone who wants to find cool stuff in the waters around SA: Do try out one of the chaingame saves, - it has plenty of Vortex'es (Vortices?) spawning too.

As for wanted level around the Naval base, - when you're in a submerged vehicle (goes for "undrowned" vehicles as well) you can go much closer before triggering the wanted level (~ to the entrance of the submarine pens).

Even closer than by swimming underwater, - which is a bit strange dozingoff.gif

Btw. in the Vortex you also need to worry about the Hydra's with a wanted level wink.gif

Unfortunately you can't collect oysters when you're in a vehicle, - you need to be on foot / swimming.

When you exit the Vortex under water, the Vortex drowns (and sinks) and CJ goes swimming. So you can locate the oyster and then exit the Vortex to collect it.

I always wanted a submarine in the game but on PS2 I knew I would never be able to get one, thanks for this. biggrin.gif

Does it only work with the vortex? What if you used another vehicle on the jump? Like a car or go-cart?

With other vehicles the jump camera will end when you hit the water (vehicle drowns).

You could try with a boat, - but I don't think they can trigger a unique jump.

I have no idea why the Vortex submerges after some distance.

Vortex can go on land or sea, right? What if you used "cars can drive on water" cheat code? Wonder if the game would read the car like it does the Vortex?

SA has "drive cars on water" cheat ? notify.gifnotify.gif

Isn't that just for Vice City ?

With a code-disc it can be done..it's been "ported" over.EDIT..and there is a button cheat for PS2 "drive on water". rightR2circleR1L2squareR1R2

I spent most of one night trying to create a jump specifically to test whether or not a boat could trigger a unique stunt jump. No matter what I tried, I couldn't trigger the slo-mo camera. I even teleported a boat directly above a very large starting zone and dropped straight through it - didn't work. However, this trick did work with an NRG or Vortex so I'm sure the jump was set up correctly.

I've noticed the Vortex has a nasty habit of sinking when CJ isn't looking at it. That's one reason I thought getting out of sight of the camera might help the sinking process. I've learned to keep the Vortex very close and hopefully in view whenever I use it to collect oysters. Frequently when I return I will find my Vortex half sunk when it wasn't far away at all.

I think the game reads the vortex as a plane...

1- if it catches fire, it blows up like 5 times, like a plane.

2- when i had a 5 star wanted level, i was driving the vortex on the water, and hydras started shooting rockets at me, hydras only shoot rockets at you when your in a plane...

Yes it gets chased by Hydra's and does provide a complimentary parachute (if you get out high enough in the air and have >= 40% flying skill).

However it adds to driving skill not flying skill (even while flying it).

The vortex is an interesting vehicle since the game considers it both a plane and a car. Which is why you can trigger a unique jump but not lose the slow-mo camera angle because it doesn't offically land, until it runs into something solid. Lots of potential for glitches with that thing. I noticed once when I took the one from the desert and drove it to San Fierro, all the way through SF only country vehicles were spawning. The same road trains, waltons and freeways, which you never see in downtown SF.

I've been playing around with cars fly, cars float, boats fly cheats and can't make much happen. It's too hard to make a flying car land on the water from the slow-mo camera, it goes way too far too fast and you just can't see it anymore. Boat just wont trigger a unique jump. I did get the firetruck to land out of view but it sank, It must of dived head on into the water. I have a few more ideas I'm going to try though.

I tried this trick today and couldn't get enough speed to trigger the slo-mo camera that happens when the jump is done..any ideas on how to get more speed or could it be just the wrong angle on the take-off? BTW..I used the jump from the Panopticon hill road going west towards the S.F. airport.

The Panopticon one is hard to trigger with it. Try to the jump over the house on the water in Valle Ocutado, where the Vortex spawns in the desert. You'll be stuck with the Sherman Reservoir though, but it's easiest to do just as a test.

  • 2 weeks later...

This trick came up on a different thread: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=280997&st=120

But I think it deserves it's own thread.

Here's how it works:

Where is a good place to find a Vortex?

SAM says there are 5 places to find one.

One in Bayside, on the beach behind the boat school.

One in the Easter Bay Naval Base.

One in the water near Red County

One on the farm with all the logs in red County

One in the Marina in LS

I'll ignore the one in the Easter Bay Naval Base, I want to collect a Vortex, not wanted stars smile.gif

I can never find the two near Red County

I haven't tried to look for the one in LS yet but the one in Bayside is a bit odd. As I approach the beach in a helicopter I see it on the beach. But then it starts to move down the slope of the beach and if it gets into the water it flips over and sinks!

If I can land the helicopter in its path then that stops it before it hits the water and I can grab it. But it's not the easiest way to get a vehicle.

Are there any that are easier to get so that I can try the submarine trick?

Steve

For the jumps shown in my video the most convenient is the Vortex at Panopticon (it's parked inside one of the sheds).

The "ramp" used in my 2nd jump can also be used to glide the Vortex into the airport.

The jump at Valle Ocultado (above the Dam) is even easier, - it has a Vortex spawning right next to it.

The Vortex at Bayside is troublesome because it spawns on a slope, - similar to other "ghost" cars.

It's never there when I've looked in them cry.gif

The SAM Map has an error for the location of the Vortex by the jump into the water of the upper dam. It shows up as the west Vortex in the Panopticon instead of the correct location up north. The Vortex in Easter Bay is located inside of the aircraft carrier and I can't figure out how to get it out.

I tried getting the Vortex out of the ship, but the best I could do was getting halfway up the stairset before running out of steam. It's fun to pootle about in the small body of water to the rear of the ship though.
