voteneg
Link to the article. Article We've all seen the trailer for the new simpsons game, the one that parody's Rockstar's San Andreas trailer/commercial. Apparently R* is up in arms over that and a few story elements that parody the GTA franchise. They've taken legal action and have convinced EA to tweak some references in the game to their favor. I love Rockstar to death, but for a company who makes their living off of parodying everything else... I think they should lighten up. This move seems a little sh*tty to me. Carry on everyone. Hmm. Perhaps this would be more suited to a general GTA or Rockstar forum. Please move if desired. Edited October 29, 2007 by voteneg

SIP YEK NOD
**sigh** they weren't upset at the fact that it was being parodied. there have been GTA parodies in everything from Robot chicken to driv3r, a game in direct competition. what rockstar was upset about was GTA-like assets being used to promote the game. they did not want people assuming they had anything to do with the sh*tty game when they saw "grand theft scratchy" posters with the classic GTA poster style and GTA text. like so: its understandable in the business world. Starion
He didn't say it was sh*tty. Just that Rockstar was having elements stole from them. It's a fun game and it's been getting good reviews but then again alot of you guys like to say every game besides GTA is sh*tty. thats a pretty bold conclusion to jump to, how about i throw a few facts at ya 1. played the demo, there are tons of issues. the camera being the main glaring fault. 2. play magazine: 7.5/10 Untimately, though, The Simpsons lives and dies on the strength of its gameplay and here it doesn't particularly shine. 3. EGM: 6.8/10 Hysterical as Simpsons is, it's hard to appreciate the humor when you're busy fighting with an annoying camera and unreliable controls. GTA3Freak-2001
The reason Rockstar are are so annoyed is that this image is being used to advertise and promote EA's game and Rockstar don't want people to think that its their upcoming game. The fact is the image is very similar so similar that some people may think its GTA and Rockstar related. Rockstar have the same rights as any other company who own a intellectual property to stop another company from taking advantage of Rockstar's fame and using it for their own gain. Anyone remember the Grand Theft Walrus spoof in the Simpson's movie? Rockstar didn't make a fuss because 20th Century Fox weren't using it as a advertisement or promotion tool and was also different enough not to be confused with Rockstar's intellectual property. A parody of something is fine, its how you go about it that matters and Rockstar have never gone to the extent of using for example their True Grime spoof of True Crime as a way to promote or advertise GTA San Andreas. There's a difference!

GTA3Freak-2001
Another thing to remember here is it may not be Rockstar the developer who have decided to attack EA over this, its probably marketing stooge in Rockstar or Take 2 who has started this. You know the business side of GTA where money is to be made, they would of course cry foul of anything that may jeopardize sales not the you should have that worry with GTA but still just because we all praise GTA as the best game ever doesn't mean its guaranteed instant success as far as sales go. Tsuroki
It's all to do with marketing, and as far as I'm concerned, Rockstar has every right to defend their product from sh*tty parodies.
Algonquin Assassin
I can see what R* is so upset about. Yes R* parody popular culture, but it's not used for advertising their product. Look in every and every one of R*'s trailers. You wouldn't now they parody anything, unless you play the games. By the looks of things "Grand Theft Scratchy" is used for a large amount of the game's story, complete with the fact the game cover is very similar to a GTA game. At the end of the day it's probably trivial, but I think calling R* "babies" is just as bad, as R* kicking up a storm about it. They have every right to defend themselves. deimossaturn
the people from the new simpsons video game said they caught some flack for their parody of the Grand Theft Auto franchise in a level where Marge protests the game because of its violence...by committing acts of violence. Yes, we can all see the irony, and obviously, so can the creators of GTA IV. Haven't you been paying attention to the whole Jack Thompson thing? OF COURSE THEY KNOW ITS A JOKE...OF COURSE YOU KNOW THEY KNOW ITS A JOKE.... they are just vying for some publicity wherever they can. That's due to the nature of the market. It's highly competative and highly saturated. You have to make the product name stick however you can, even if it means manufacturing the controversy. This may come as a surprise to you, and you may think I'm being paranoid or Fox Mulderish, but Brittney Spears was paid by the tabloids to shave her head and hit a car with an umbrella, because that's exactly the kind of sh*t that people will pay good money to read about. Human beings are attracted to controversy. It works on us because we are so incredibly superficial. That's my two cents.

That image was in the game not for a game based off GTA. Not to mention they have nothing similar. In that level of the Simpsons Game it's not pony farm or anything like that. Datalord
I find the interview with the EA dev's (morons) highly bitter. They couldn't get what they wanted so they get pissy over it. Now I think the word "spaz" in America is an acceptable word to use commonly? However in the UK it is not, it is very insulting and makes the interview some what unprofessional. However with it being an American I guess the word has a completely different context. The "They are rockstars" bit seems highly irrelevant. Thinking the "gamers are not morons" leaves something to be desired. Mob Rule? Well that sound like it had a whole 5 minutes thought. EA innovation! Lame attempts at sattire and parody? Well R* actually have used some thought in the parodies, unlike certain EA games where they have constant self promotion plastering the logo over anything possible. The same games with new rosters and interfaces as the previous year are constantly churned out by EA, yet it's somewhat obvious zero thought is placed in these games. BF2142 is basically a mod for BF2. Yet people will buy these things every year? Gamers are not morons? EA rockstars? They had thier day long ago. Sure if I want a game that is bug ridden and needs 10 patches that slow it down and break something else, I'll buy an EA game. Now IV was delayed for a reason, more dev time, to put some more quality hours towards the game. As we all know 10 of the same game churned out each year needs months of dev time! It's not like EA have NEVER delayed anything I can name a recent one, Army of Two. Don't forget the expansions you can never have enough! I for one will not be buying the Simpsons game, the reviews are not impressing me. Don't get me wrong I used to think EA was great some games they made were fantasic. Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Sim City, Original Sims, BF1942, MOHAA to name a few. BF2 was good until they sh*t on it with patch after patch, expansion after expansion. You soon get sick of it. Well that's my rant over. BWAI BWAI BWAI UltraGizmo64 1 Help medical research with your PC and PS3 | Support GTAF [email protected] |
