Chickstick Posted January 8, 2008 Author Share Posted January 8, 2008 CHAPTER ELEVEN Chicago 19th December 1957 18:01 The King stretched out on his chaise longue (he called it an “expensive piece of Frenchie sh*t”) and bit into his apple. Apples always seemed to help lessen the effects of his hangovers, which was good seeing as recently he had been in a hangover almost permanently. “But why shouldn’t I be able to?” he thought aloud. After all, he had made his fortune the old-fashioned way- through hard work. He closed his sore eyes from the light and lost himself in nostalgia. He saw himself as a twenty year old, fresh from college, ready to take on the world. He saw his father being shot by a member of the Chicago mob, and the killer’s eventual bloody, slow and painful death at the hands of the King himself. He saw his descent into crime, taking over the family of his father’s killer, working up the food chain until he became top dog in Chicago just before Hitler invaded Germany. He saw once again the deaths of all his rivals in the mainland United States. He saw the man he was now, the richest, most powerful guy on America, with more power than even the President, able to kill or spare a man with a single word. His thoughts were interrupted by Mercedes. She waltzed through the door, still a little uneasy on her feet after their wild drinking the night before. “Denny’s come to see you” she said. With her accent she pronounced “Denny’s” Denisk. “Thanks, baby. Send him through. Has he got Mattaloni with him?” “I don’t know, but he is with another man. I’ll go get him and leave you boys to talk in private, okay?” She exited and a minute later the King was greeted by Denny and Jimmy. Denny kneeled down and kissed the King’s hand. “Il re,” he said, and bowed his head as a sign of respect. Jimmy just stood uncomfortably wondering whether he too should do the same. Luckily he had no need to make a decision as the King stretched out an arm to Jimmy and shook his hand. The King said, “Mr Mattaloni, may I call you James?” “Call me whatever you’d like, Sir, although most people know me as Jimmy.” “Of course, of course. Jimmy, care for a drink?” “No thanks you, Mr…?” “Just call me the King, Jimmy, everybody else does.” Jimmy nodded and an awkward silence descended on the small group for a couple of seconds until Jimmy spoke. “Forgive me for being impatient, King, but why am I here?” The King smiled and took another bite out of his apple. I've had very, very little free time recently, so I haven't been able to get much writing done, and what little writing I have been doing is Babes, Booze and Bullets. Add the fact that I accidently deleted all 80+ chapters of AOD I had written off my memory stick, and I'm seriously pissed off. I'm going to leave this story for a couple more weeks until I get more free time and until I can finally read through this story without wanting to shout endless profanities at it...
