From the GTA 2 entry of wikipedia -

Hare Krishna (symbol: an orange flower) - They appear in the third area and their car, the Karma Bus, is a big love bus with flowers painted on its roof. The Krishna's turf is around their temple. Their boss' name is Sunbeam. He calls the player "Grasshopper". They use orange as a gang color. The GTA2 manual states that their criminality is entirely based around stealing and destroying technology, due to the fact that they are tired of being run over by cars with nothing but tambourines to defend themselves (a reference to the first Grand Theft Auto, where they were called the Gourangas and the player was rewarded for running them down).

Aren't they a bunch of Elvis impersonaters?

I recall it says "Elvis has left the building!" on the screen when you kill all of them.

they probably where, I think you have to run them all over at the same time for it to say that.

Yeah, they're classic. Newer GTAs suffer from an acute lack of Elvis!

Although, looking at your avatar, Claude had something Elvis-like.

Thanks I must have got confused, one of the cheat codes on GTA 2 is GOURANGA that's probably why I thought they where from GTA 2.

The Krishnas were in GTA2, not GTA1. You see the main guy carrying a guy in orange in the intro of GTA2. The real-acted one.

Yes, in GTA2 they made an appearance in the movie and as a gang you could do missions for. But we are talking about the random groups of people, walking around the city in lines, giving you a big bonus if you run them over all at once.

Edit: Here you go: http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~shio/gta/gta1/gouranga1.jpg

...giving you a big bonus if you run them over all at once.

I just by chance launched a rocket in the middle of a group of them and it said "GOURANGA" so it isn't only running them down.

Yes they do chant something but I'm not sure what exactly it is.

In the Original GTA you didnt have to run those people over to get the "GOURANGA" bonus. You got a multiplier to your score for every consecutive person you would kill. So run over one person get ten points, two people 20 points, along those lines, you get same bonus if you simply shoot them, but you have to be fast. If you get enough people in a row you get the "GOURANGA" bonus. I drove down a sidewalk once and got the bonus without seeing any of the orange men around. Just so happens that their gang always consisted of enough people to get the bonus.

I always thought they were young pupils, students, or something like this, and the "chanting" is actually the noise what youngsters usually make outside the classrooms.

In reality, they are Hare Krishna members indeed, and "Gouranga" is a special state of mind what Krishna members pray for, much like Nirvana at buddhists.
