So, I got this new pc with an Athlon 64 X2 processor and I don't know which kind of software I should be installing from now on...

I think I should be downloading the AMD64 distributions right? Will non-AMD64 programs work ok?

it does emulate 32 bit programs, but doesn't emulate them all well. some programs won't work. you can install a regular 32 bit programs, but they aren't guaranteed to work right.

there are 64 bit distros of most popular programs, but you might be left in the cold with the smaller pgorams, and some games.

Athlon 64 X2 4400+ here, using Windows Vista 64 bits. I only have issues with some programs that totally don't work under 64bits OS'es, all the rest works ok without much problems. Tip: get the latest version of the program you want to run, it probably has some sort of compatibility to work with either Vista or 64bit things.

My Windows (Vista) is 32 bits, shall I download x86 or AMD64?

You know, my theory about this is the following:

I guess the OS is what handles the whole software operation. So, if you have a 32bit OS and a 64bits processor, everything will run at 32bits, since that's what the OS is limited to. Not that with 64bits OS'es all programs will run at 64bits (biggrin.gif), but at least you'll push the bits limit further. When the programs become 64bits, then you're all ready to use its full capacity without a OS reinstall or something like that.

So I guess you should get 32bits programs.

I don't know if I'm totally right there, but I suppose that I got SOMETHING right x_x

When I bought this computer, I thought "hey, since I have a 64bits processor, why not use an OS that can fully support it? Even if the programs aren't 64bits, at least the OS will be". And so I got the 64bits version of Vista.

Yea you're pretty much right. the OS in this case is the limiting factor, so get 32bit programs. I wouldn't suggest moving to 64bit just yet, I've heard about lots of compatibility issues.
