Jaywire
This time last year I bought a 1995 F-150 XL. Short bed, red, amazing shape for 120,000 miles, 4.9L, 5 speed. At the time I was not a fan of Ford trucks or anything Ford for that matter. After the past year though.. I have come to love Ford and especially this truck and the Oxen of a motor called the 4.9L I6, or the 300CID, or as some old timers might call it, "straight 6" I know from experience it's got about 5 times the torque as my parents 5.4 in there 2002 F-150, and could easily match give it a run for its money in a race, which is the reason people love it so much. Enough torque to pull a 5 ton boat, and enough pure power to go from 0-60 in a decent amount of time. A few days ago I put a Summit racing exhaust on it, cut off the stupid catalytic converters (it had 2!) and shotgunned it out the back. My god... It was decently powerful before, but now it's just stupid powerful and sounds killer to boot. I'm actually looking into getting an old 300 off ebay and rebuilding it, boring it out .030 over and putting all forged internals etc in it, then dropping that puppy in her. So what is your opinion? Have you ever owned a 300? Do you think it's a great motor? I've never heard anyone say anything bad about a 300 besides they get a bit noisy once they hit about 100K. And to fix that? Run some thicker oil like 20W50. Mine purrrrs like a kitten with that thick stuff in it! Now for some goodies of my baby. She is a bit rusty on the bumper and a bit on the bed side, but that is not bad at all for the year and miles!
SIP YEK NOD
ford has produced better motors. your average ford(and eve some chevy) based strip vehicle will have the 5L, and the 4.6 has all the torque of the 4.9 with better fuel economy. i have an 00 F-150 with the 4.6l, and its just a monster. right now i have 10 ply load rated tires on there, and it can spin em on dry pavement. there is a whole pile of low end torque, but i would want a little more on the high end. from what i hear, the 4.9s are good engines, but head to head, the 4.6 would murder the 4.9. i have had about 7500lbs if scrap iron and a 5000lb trailer, well over thrice the rated payload and nearly the maximum trailer weight, and the truck could still accelerate up a 6% grade. the tires were nearly flat, and it couldn't stop worth a damn, but who needs to stop? its no surprise the first thing to fail on these things is usually the tranny. that much torque that low for that long, and there is bound to be issues. mah ford:
Jaywire
The 4.6 is a decent motor, we had one in the 97 F150 I learned to drive in... spun a bearing on it, piston rings blew out, ate oil like no other. About a quart a week, no lie. My buddy has a 4.6 in his 99 Cobra SVT. BALLS! That puppy screams. I've matched you in the 7500 in scrap. No trailer though. It could still accelerate and even break pretty easily. Hills were nothing, put it in 3rd gear and she purred the whole way up. I wouldn't exactly say the 4.6 would MURDER the 4.9. Sure, the 4.6 is a V8 and has more top end torque and horse, but horsepower isn't everything. 2000 4.6L 231 hp (172 kW)/293 ft·lb 1995 4.9L 165hp (123 kW)/265 ft·lb With a couple mods, maybe new exhaust manifold, port my head, new headers, I could easily match the 4.6 in power. Sure, the 4.6 can be supercharged and such, but even still. I have seen 4.9L's pushing 330+ HP at the wheels and almost 450+ ft·lb with an engine rebuild and some forged internals, and still strong as an ox. My truck can and will sit and spin the tires as long as I let it on dry pavement. Just dump the clutch and hold the RPM's at roughly 6000. OF course that isn't exactly GOOD for it, which is why I never do it unless some ricers try showing off with there fart along 2 liters The 4.6 and 4.9 are great in each of there own ways, some advantages, some disadvantages, but it is a fact that the power and torque it has is pretty impressive for a V6. Plus it's just a strong engine. All in all, my main point was that maybe its not that great in sheer power and speed, but the 4.9L is an amazing work horse. If you need to climb a wall, then tear it down, then pick all the pieces up and haul them away, then you need a 4.9L PS, sorry if this seems jumbled and doesn't make much sense, been working a 16 hour shift NEED SLEEP! OF course that isn't exactly GOOD for it, which is why I never do it unless some ricers try showing off with there fart along 2 liters the difference is mine is an auto, it can spin em in gear from idle then again, with those smaller tires on it, that thing shouldn't have trouble doing it either. for about a grand, i could get the 4 valve cylinder heads off an older Lincoln car, and a decent set of headers, it could be pushin 320hp/350 ft/lbs my only real serious gripe with the 4.6, specifically the 00 4.6 is the maintinence. there is no single coil, each spark plug has its own coil. there is no spark degradation until your spark plugs go, but its nearly impossible to change the spark plugs. compound that with the fact that the back 2 spark plugs are basically underneath the firewall, and you have issues. lurchseesu420
All of my friends seemed to have or have had one. Actually went to a lot yesterday to try and buy back my friends 86 F150 4x4 with the old 300. He traded it in for 800 and they wanted 2450 for it. What Bullsh*t. And another friend has a 94 Bronco with one that blew a head gasket a few weeks ago. Another friend had a 94 4x4 with 33x 11.50's on it. Drove it like a maniac. It could pull or haul anything. He once went over some rail road tracks with the bed full of scrap metal at around 50 mph. Metal went all over the road. He had the exhaust cut off and it sounded like sh*t. They don't sound much better with it on though. And it was so slow. I mean if you think they're powerful then think again. The 4WD's are even worse. I mean my 73 beetle could outrun one. But he did drive that thing like a maniac. That kind of driving caught up to him. Back in July, him and another died in a car wreck driving a 93 Explorer. They might still be alive if had been driving the F150 because he new that truck's limits. Now his dad has the truck and occasionaly hauls stuff around in it. But mostly it just sits in his shed now. @ Sip for alot less than a grand you could find a totaled Mk. 8 with a near perfect engine. silvermanblue
I find that most inline motors are torque monsters. But the 300 is a almost unkillable motor. But I will stick to my 4.0 HO iline 6 in my cherokee, thing is damn fast. Stickshift to Leone Family Mafia ПРОПАГАНДА.ИНЦ, СИЛВЕРМАНБЛУЕ
Suction Testicle Man
I can only talk British/European, but I own an old Ford running a 2.0l straight 4 and can say nothing but good things for their engines. With regular oil changes they run forever; I know a guy who had a Cortina Estate from new up to 360k miles, stock engine and not reconditioned. Just a shame that while the engine lasts forever, the rest of the car happily disintegrates at a frightening speed. If at first you don't succeed, you fail, and the test will be terminated. Mega
Some polish dude fit a 2.9 scorpio engine into a Polonez (google it), and turbo-ed it. All home made, not a single problem for over 50k km since. For the 300CID, it's the good ole engine block that will last ages. Signature soon.
