Forfit
1080p is the best. As for brand, that's personal preference. Same goes for LCD/plasma/DLP. Pay attention to Contrast Ratio also, the higher the better.
Sixdust
You can go higher than 1080p, essentially 1600p, however it requires a very good gaming computer as the input (or component/vga/dvi connections) and one of those 30" Computer LCDs. As for TV sets, as of now, 1080p is the crown jewel. I like alot of the samsung tvs, due to the high contrast ratios, options and sexy encasing, and the price isn't that bad either. I would go for an LCD, cheaper, less chance of burn-in etc., How far back do you plan on sitting when watching this television? (It will determine the amount of inches for your tv screen)

Mark
What size are you looking for? at 40"-46" ish you got almost every companies options. 46" and above you're looking at a bit more money so might have to settle for a "lower" brand. I don't know what you guys have in the US but I've got my eye on a Sony KDL40X3500. 18000:1 Dynamic CR, And what I find important, "100Hz motionflow" as Sony call it plus the Full High-Def resolution. Seriously, looking at one in the flesh, even though I sell Sony TVs for a living, made me say "wow!". Price tag is nasty though. Maybe go for the KDL40W3000. No motionflow though...still, a very nice high-def telly. 16000:1 CR isn't to be laughed at. I spose XBR = US Version of our X? Standard is Silver, glass surround, top range model, comes in 40", 46", 52" and 70"?

And the 70" is $30,000 And the picture... They really know what they are doing when it comes to televisions.
