Otter
Have you set up a nework? If so, then all you have to do is make sure that the drive or folder your music is in is set to "shared."
TheGuyFromThere
As far as I'm aware there's a folder called Public on my laptop (vista) but I don't know if that's just for the laptop or whether other computers on this network (I'm assuming both computers are linked via network as its called a wireless network) can connect to the Public folder. How can I set this all up? inactive
EmSixTeen
They might use the same wireless connection for the internet, but not necessarily be networked to each other for files and the likes. They both need to be set to the same workgroup (usually MSHOME or WORKGROUP by default if I recall). Google and it should be easy.
Picolini
Setting up a network with Vista is a bitch, as I've found out myself. Make sure you have file sharing on, that you are set to a private network (not public) and that you have the correct work group name. Basically those usually cause me problems. Then you need to set what folders you want to share from that computer... which is too long for me to explain properly. Search Windows help for that, that's how I figured it out. Otter
Also, the network setup wizard is pretty simple. It's in the control panel.
TheGuyFromThere
Ok, so in the process of messing around with that workgroup thing, I seem to have somehow made my wireless connection say it is 'Local only' and it wont connect to the internet. How do I fix it, it can't. Plus - I don't know what caused it. Currently trying to reinstall it with the CD... I removed it and re-added it but it still said local only........ im sh*tting bricks now, please help me inactive
TheGuyFromThere
CD didnt work - what do i do? It can't find any networks, it wont connect to anything, whats the craic?? inactive
TheRoper
To change the workgroup: •Right-click My Computer -> Properties •Scroll down to Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings •Select Change settings •Click the Change button to rename the computer •Computer name doesn't really matter, just make sure the workgroup is the same on both computers. The process is relatively the same for the PC which I assume has XP. •Click OK, I think you have to reboot. Now, you said you tried to reinstall with the CD. What? Vista? If so, and you can't even see any networks at all, it's probably your wireless adapter driver. (or perhaps your wi-fi switch on the side of the laptop, if you have one. I've done that once, I was all wtf.) •Right-click My Computer -> Properties •Hardware Tab •Device Manager •Network Adaptors •whichever one says wireless adapter •See if it has a yellow exclamation mark •If so, search the manufacturer website for drivers for that model # Hope that helps. TheGuyFromThere
Ok so, after troubleshooting by clicking random buttons, trying system restores, going through complex computer menus, device drivers - i decide to go caveman and use windows help. help suggested - turn your wirelessbutton on, all good then it suggested that i restart my modem works fine... i'm using my laptop now but i turned the modem off, turned the plug on, which I thought was off, and it was in the on position. The modem was f*cking turned off at the plug. Question 2, if my modem was turned off at the plug. Why was my desktop still able to connect? Question 3, who the f*ck turned off my modem And about the network - unless bill gates himself sets it up, to hell with... not goin through this sh*te again Edited October 3, 2007 by Dom0803 inactive

A good hour of screwing with workgroups and settings fixes it. If your modem was off, there's no way your desktop gets internet, unless it uses another connection.
