Vanquish
I'm using 3DS Max 9 and would like to know the best way, when modelling a car, to make an oval shape to accomodate the grille. Let me demostrate what I mean: How would you go about making the oval grille in that? I've tried various different methods but I would like to know the way that I'm meant to be using. Would you completley ignore it to begin with and then once you've modelled the front, delete the polygons to make the hole for the grille afterwards, and then target weld some 'triangles' in? I can't seem to find any decent tutorials that say the best way to do this. Any response would be muchos appreciated ... DexX
I've tried various different methods but I would like to know the way that I'm meant to be using. There isn't any "one" correct/right way to model. i'll suggest 2 methods, but it's up to each person to select a method that works best for them. i assume you are poly modeling. method one: Model that area flat, as if the hole does not exist. then come back and "cut" the shape of the hole in, and delete the faces that would make up the hole. method two: model "around" the hole as you get to that region of the model, and adjust your tesselation as appropriate. in both cases you should end up with a series of inner edges (that form the inner part of the oval), that can be shift-dragged inwards (hold shift, and drag the edges, to clone/extrude at the same time). Try both methods, and use the one you prefer.
Vanquish
Ah cheers for the help. I've always used the first method most regularly, but after using the second method I think that much better suits me now. I've taught myself how to model by just playing around with the software for the past couple of years and I'm just making sure that I'm not using really awkward ways of modelling when there could be much simpler solutions. Thanks for the assistance.
