DexX
i have FF7, and FF IV (part of FF Chronicles, w/Chrono Trigger) on my psx, and i'm thinking of picking up FF III on the DS. Between my friends and myself, i have access to nearly every FF game released in north america. The only FF game i have played to any extent is FF7, where i got about half way through disc 1, before a couch destroyed (was dropped on) that disc, and killed my motivation (i did re-buy the game later, but it was never the same). I also know the numbering system in North America wasn't the same as Japan. Basically here's what i'm wondering; Does it matter what order one plays the Final Fantasy games in? If it matters, what would be the correct, or most enjoyable order? I know there are 12-13 games? i don't plan to play them all, certainly not anytime soon. i'm just curious which one to start with, since i hear the story and characters don't continue from one game to the next. The Killa
I never played them in order 1-13. As far as I'm concerned, I don't think they stories between the games are connected in any way. Then again, I haven't touched an FF game in a long time, so I'm probably wrong. I went from FF7 up, since that was the more popular / bandwagon one. Made sense to me Edited September 28, 2007 by The Killa
E.A.B.
The Final Fantasy series was confusing when I heard about it "So wait a sec, each game has nothing to do with the last? Then why are they under the same title, and with numbers as if they were sequels?" Yeah, each game has nothing to do with the next. Play however you want to. although...later on they DID make sequels for previous installments. Like Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2, but that's the only sequel I know of, and they both bear the "X" so the "different numbers=different characters and story etc" rule still applies. Consult Wikipedia I don't know, if you want to experience how the games got progressively better (that's debatable, I could certainly say that the j-pop is annoying) or something, go ahead and play them from 1 to 13. But theres really nothing to be gained.
silvermanblue
For the most part the stories are different each version. But they each carry over simularity Summons, chocobos, wedge and biggs and ect. The only true sequel I am aware of is final fantasy X-2. kingzing
I've always like the Final Fantasy games, but I've only ever played VIII and X. I regularly hear that VII is one of the better ones, so you should try and get yourself into that if you can. It honestly doesn't matter which one you play first. But you might want to try the newer ones (X, X-2 and XII) if you want an FF game that doesn't have dated graphics (XI is PC and online only). Of course, graphics aren't the most important thing, but it might help you get into a Final Fantasy game if your eyes aren't bleeding trying to look at the pixels. After all, it's so much easier to judge a book by its cover.
Tetsuo2501
none of the games have any correlation between them with the exception of FFX and FFX-2. FF1 through FF12 are all different stories settings ect, only thing that connects the games together is the races/classes in the game pretty much. DexX
decided to start with FFIII on the DS (most convenient). i completely forgot about the random-ass battles. still, pretty engrossing. i'm not a huge rpg fan so my goal is more to just get to the end of the game, not necessarily at 100%. Mark
Not a fan of random battles? Try XII. It's pretty different from most FFs, but it's still a good game.
