Suspected fried CPU

My old computer was having a lot of problems, I thought it was the RAM, but after building my new one, I decided to put Windows on it to make a Winamp server ( I have some favorite plugins I can't use now that I switched to Linux). Anyway, the computer would not even boot into the BIOS or POST, so I began trouble-shooting. However, the computer will not even POST with just the CPU connected, and taking the CPU out and turning it on makes no difference in what it's doing. I'm figuring that the motherboard or CPU is fried, but I don't have a lot of spare components to check.

The CPU looks fine, there's no visible defects, but I'm a little worried about popping it into my friend's computer to test it. If there is a problem with it, could it effect the rest of his computer? My fear is that there could be a short somewhere inside of the processor that then shorts out the rest of the components. I know that a fired motherboard can fry other components like video cards and hard-drives, but I'm not sure if the same is true with CPUs.

If it is the same socket processor as your friends, put it in his board to test it, if its dead it won't affect the motherboard.

You said you tested it with only a proc, did you have ram in it? I've never had a board that posted without ram.

Also is there any beeps, or lights. Check the Power Supply with a multimeter.

Good Luck. icon14.gif

It wouldn't POST with or without RAM, taking it out had no effect; same with removing the video card and every component down to and including the CPU.

There are no beeps whatsoever, but there is power, as I've observed the fans spinning and my hard-drive spinning up. I don't believe I have a multimeter, but there's no doubt that the power supply is supplying power; just not sure if it's doing it correctly.

So, if the processor works in my friend's computer, I'm better that there is something wrong with the motherboard. I don't have a spare PSU to test, but is there much chance it's the cause if it's supplying power to the rest of the computer?

Well, it sounds like either the processor or the board, so I would double check the power connections to the board, and test the processor in another board.

If it works in another computer, try it in yours again, I've had them work after re-seating them.

If not, it most likely the board.

I had that problem too, a bad stick of RAM somehow fried the mobo. Replaced the mobo and it fried again after a while. Bought a new CPU and it did the same thing. But I ran a memtest before it fried and found out one stick of RAM was causing like 100 errors a second. nervous.gif

Yeah, I had some RAM fail memtests, but nothing too severe; I wasn't sure if it was the board's fault or the RAM's fault on that one, all I know is the RAM is in my friend's computer and he's probably not willing to wait an hour to run memtest.

All of the connections to the board are made, and I've tried re-seating the chip ( that's worked for me before when I've had this problem too ), but still no go. I haven't gotten the chance to pop it into my friend's computer.
