Hobo-Lord
its only possible IF IT WAS ORIGINALLY A MP3, or any other multiple layer song converting it into a mp3 wont work. Then you would have to downlad a music layer splitter ( extremly hard to find) or you can record it in a very low volume ( if the "train sound" volume is high enough) so that you cant hear the background music, and hear the other songs. this requires a extremly high quality recorder... -- the best way is to split the mp3 to little parts with all the sounds you want in it (example: record only the train sounds WITH the background music) - dont worry, the background music wont show up that much

truthspitta
I used to work in an audio suite and the engineer used to bash his head against the wall every time he was asked this question. Unless you have the original Pro Tools project, or whatever program was originally used to mix it, you are going to end up with a sub par result. Especially if you are trying to use a downloaded WMV or Quicktime file. Each individual audible sounds has its own audio track. With fades and all. These tracks are usually a minimum of 8 but anywhere up to the 100's are then mixed into stereo or 5.1. Not to mention they would have been compressed and reduced in bit rate. I think the best thing to do in your case would be to search the net for background SFX and create the audio bed yourself from scratch. It may sound like a lot of work but will give you more control over the final result and be a lot less of a headache then trying pick apart an already compressed file. Hope that helps. aragond
I used to work in an audio suite and the engineer used to bash his head against the wall every time he was asked this question. I'd believe that - it's impossibly hard. Unless you've got the original music and can "reverse" it out of the soundtrack, a process that would have to be insanely precise, you're SOL. Even then, with the music track, you'd be fighting uphill against high frequency artifacts. Better way would be just to isolate the individual sounds you're after and TRY using a really good frequency equaliser to downplay the music frequencies without cancelling the train sounds. Even BETTER idea would be to get an SFX album / library and record the appropriate sounds, mix them to as close as you can get and then underlay your soundtrack. Just my tuppence. Justin
Since this isn't GTAIV specific, I've moved it to Tech & PC Chat. Thank me later.
Otter
For your needs, I'd suggest just clipping really tightly to the sound effects that are important, then further decreasing the volume. Then again, this all depends on what software you're using. If you're using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, your best best is to simply replace the audio altogether.
