spyro_ie
Me and a few of my mates are in a cover band of sorts and are planning on doing a few gigs in the local bars/pubs. Of course the first thing we need to do is make a set-list. This is where the problem is. First off, there are five members in the band and each has their own personal music tastes. Some are more into the pop side of music, some in to rock and also metal. Seeing as we are doing gigs in the local area, we weren't sure what songs to play or even how many. We could play some of the popular songs around now in the pop/indie scene, we could go for the rock side of things or what I'm sure every band member would love but isn't always sensible, play the songs they personally love. Seeing as this forum is full of a reasonably wide ranging demographic and music tastes, what kind of music would you expect or like to be played in your local? Personally I was thinking along the lines of a rock/80's music cover band, but hey, what do I know.
XN22
Neutral Milk Hotel. Always Neutral Milk Hotel. You can also do Don't Fear The Reaper, only if you have a cowbell player though.
Scarface187
Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark Great crowd participation garanteed. Are any of you into new wave? You can't go wrong with some Oingo Boingo and Devo. but yeah, figure out how many songs you'd be able to play and then split the set list in half with some mellow-ish rock for the first half then take things up a couple levels in the second half. I'd recommend a lot more but I don't know what instruments you all play or how skilled you are. Do you just do guitars, vocals drums and bass or do you have a keyboard player too? EDIT - If you have a keyboard player, go with some Porcupine Tree. Even if you don't have one you could still do some songs like Trains which is a great live song. spyro_ie
Well we have 5 members, me on drums, a bass player and 3 guitarists. 3 guitars.... I know, a bit excessive but the vocalist recently started playing guitar so what can ya do. A few songs I thought would go down well were some QOTSA songs, More Than A Feeling by Boston and maybe Sweet Home Alabama. I'd like to do some Iron Maiden, but you know it isn't exactly the easiest to play. Don't Fear the Reaper was actually on my list of songs to learn! Do not play Sweet Home Alabama, under any circumstances. I like the song but practically every covers band/karaoke fan does it, without fail. It's beyond a joke. Why don't you just get each band member to write down 2 or 3 songs they'd really like to do, then swap lists around and try and do 1 or 2 of each person's. So everyone should be somewhat happy then. Plus you should get a nice eclectic mix of songs. That said, you should definitely do Video Killed The Radio Star. soundcloud.com/TheDamnFineCoats

You're not there to play a bunch of your favorite songs and hope people dig it, because they won't. You're there to play a bunch of songs that everyone knows, so that they dance and buy drinks. Uno Carb
I say to make things easier, you play at least 2 songs that each person wants to play. That's a total of 10 songs. If that's too many, cut a few requests back. Obviously you all will need to make sacrifices... it's part of being in a band.
Wolfwood
Neutral Milk Hotel. Always Neutral Milk Hotel. You can also do Don't Fear The Reaper, only if you have a cowbell player though. We all love a bit of 'Two-Headed Boy, Part II'. Deffinantly any rock music that's upbeat that you've heard mainstream, it really goes down well regardless, and if you're drunk, the better. Red Hot Chili Peppers would so well, and I'm not really a fan of these guys, they just go down well and surprisingly, Fall Out Boy get everyone in a club signing, trust me, I've been there, and it is so much fun, a good laugh. Wait... McFly!

We all love a bit of 'Two-Headed Boy, Part II'. Part 1 was better. Holland 1945 was the best, though. But yeah, NMH is good. Probably not your style, but Of Montreal is good too. Love Personal Jesus and is definitly on my list of songs to learn. Whats the name of that song by Cream I believe where it goes "He's going the distance, he's going for speed." I heard it in an ad once and thought it was a classy song.
