TheDude5000
So I try to sign into MSN, and I get this crap: So I grudgingly upgrade, and I can't stand how Windows Live Messenger looks. I can't stand the interface/GUI or whatever you call it. I've been using the normal MSN Messenger for years and I don't wanna have to switch over to Windows Live Messenger. Just like they ruined the Windows Media Player look with Version 10, they needlessly changed things around with a lame attempt at a more modern looking client. So, I uninstall, and re-install MSN, but I obviously still can't log in now. Is there anyway around this crap, or am I stuck with that ugly new look of Windows Live Messenger? Waddy
Yeah, evn thought you will be upgrading to not the current version. I think MSN needs to upgrade, or it will stop working. Same happened to Seddo yesterday, and he got all the Unicef logo things that came up. But yeah, I think your gona have to go ahead and push that button! The ' man' won this round! TheDude5000
No he didn't. I already found a way around it. Run in compatibility mode for Windows 2000. Works like a charm. Only problem I noticed is the little MSN icon in the task bar area is a little pixelated and looks crap. I'm gonna try out 7.0.0820 to see if the icon looks normal with that one, seeing as how MS is probably gonna try to find a way around the compatibility mode thing eventually. SWEETSAPRIK
If that's the case then I think it's just that you can't use the old MSN without a workaround, not that you actually need to have Live, because I've used gaim (now pidgin) forever with no troubles. Don't even have MSN installed anymore and I haven't had any problems signing on yet. Knock on wood. PяopagaиdaIиc.
TheDude5000
Well on Tuesday, September 11, Microsoft has announced that users using MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messneger 8.0 are due to a vulnerability in video chats and webcam conversations which allows hackers to take complete control of your computer. As a result, all users of the above mentioned Messenger versions are mandated to upgrade to WLM 8.1.0178 (for XP users), or the newest version of MSN Messenger - 7.0.0820. Hmm, I just tried 7.0.0820 and it does the same thing. So I went back to 7.5. Do you think they'll eventually prevent people from using compatibility mode to use 7.5 or something? I don't wanna have to use that piece of sh*t looking Windows Live Messenger, no thanks. It's a resource hog, and the interface looks horrible. I mean, even the ad images are all pixelated and weird looking, my display pics all of a sudden end up pixelated and look like crap, all the icons look stupid and generic, the templates/backgrounds just look stupid, etc. Ugh. /rant
Waddy
I like MSN, the way it works and looks, gota be the best IM system out there anyway. You can always use like MSNPlus to tidy it up and give you a few extra's and stuff.

Svip
Have you tried Pidgin? It looks a lot better than WLM.
Saget
I don't understand what you people have against WLM. I've loved it from the beta, it always worked as a charm. |DeviantArt|Flickr|YouTube|#amf|

I heard on the news Microsoft lost a multi-million dollar case against Europe or some group in Europe. @Topic WLM isn't that bad. But it does suck that it forces you to upgrade. i have 8.0 then it forced me to go to 8.1. And I'm capped. so I said no but it wouldn't let me log on. So i finally said yes. Took quite a few minutes. Didn't see any changes

Svip
WLM is good as Good as what? Cake with mustard? Yum yum? @the poster before you with the awesomely stupid name I refuse to type in: No, the European Union sued Microsoft for misuse of its position as controlled 95% of the Desktop market in Europe. They have to pay the sum of half a billion Euros. Also, they have to release some of their source code. See here for more information.
Waddy
There was also something about AOL owning all rights to the 'Instant message' system a few years ago, Im not sure of the outcome but I know a court did acknowledge that AOL did indeed have the rights, So company's such as MS, Yahoo etc etc, now have to pay, or compensate AOL somehow for being able to use IM programs. Sillyhed2000
Yes, Microsoft yet again forcing you to upgrade their sh*tty products so they can cram more bloat down your throat. But really - try out A-patch. It's a lifesaver - allows you to customize your messenger installation to remove so much of the crap you don't need. <3 Kopete.
