Recently on YouTube i watched a video of an interview with Jack Thompson about his stand on videogames, the show was "Nightime" or something like that

What's interesting was that the more i watched i got more repulsed at how people have lashed at him, of course i'm pissed too as a videogamer but i don't wear a "I HATE Jack Thompson" T-Shirt, what the f*ck is that about?

I also heard him say a lot of foolish things about GTA, but one comment truly made me think, if i'm not wrong he said that industries these days were using violence as an excuse to sell more videogames...i gotta say it's the full truth.

My point is if we as gamers are truly concerned about this dilemma, instead of the constant bashing at everyone who threatens our ways of entertainment, personally i do like J.T., he always states his opinion, and unlike other politician assholes like Hilary or Yee, he truly believes in his argument, and more importantly, he is just a concerned father, i know for a fact that games don't screw people, but it's important to hear other people's opinions.

TO MODS, if this is the wrong place for the topic please move, i was just lurking around here and posted

That is one of the worst run-on sentences ever. It is also a bit misguided. I'm not sure which is worse. Someone who will change their tune to follow popular opinion, or someone who is so stubborn that he cannot even check the most basic facts. I think, there is a good enough reason to dislike both. Not hate, but dislike for sure.

Industries will sell whatever sells. They are intended to do just that as one of the cornerstones of capitalism.

I don't see the revelation. isn't it obvious that they would market stimulating material.

It's not precisely the revelation, it's the fact that many crap games with focus in "gore" and all that crap keep comin out and they suck, very few developers make intelligent or even original games like "Shadow Of The Colossus", "Oblivion", "Hitman" and so many more, i can't deny i like violence in entertainment, but as a consumer i like it WELL DONE, this opinion of mine is clearly different from Thompson's, but even YOU as a consumer, would you prefer the most violent game or the best game?, that's where GTA stands out, because it's not only about killing people, and that is probably one of the arguments that Thompson does not realize

J.T. is simply against violence in games, though. He's not against miss-used violence. He is against it period. These are extremely different positions. No game will ever be able to hang on violence alone. It has to have something else. It would be nice if more developers realized that. But it doesn't mean that you should crusade against violence to prevent it from being overused, because the games that get most focus in such attacks are the ones that actually use it in the right places.

maybe not, maybe it's only because they get into the public mainstream

That's what I meant. Games that try to float on violence alone are almost never any good. So the good games are going to be the ones that use violence right. And since they are the popular ones, they are the ones that anti-violence advocates are going to focus on.

I am going to have to agree with K^2 on this.

The aren't so much anti-violence though, more like pro-pacifist which is far worse really. They do go under the guise of anti-violence yet do not be confused by the sheep suit.

Or as the movies say,"Pay no heed to the man behind the curtain!" ph34r.gif

Anything that promotes self reliance and the use of strategy to overcome will get targetted unless they control it. The rebellion seeds in particular will be targetted.

The fascists and the "communists" are still with us by and large. Yet they live among us and not only are they curious about what is on your bookshelf but what video games do you play is a question they want answered as well. Creepy agenda-ites! mercie_blink.gif

The biggest problem is that these "fascists" and "communists" don't realize that they are these things. I don't think any of them would advocate a Fascist or Communist government, and yet, things that they advocate tend to lead towards such states. The worst part is that they tend to have good intentions. They just don't have a clue how to realize them, and keep pulling in the wrong direction.

That said, I don't think J.T. actually cares about the violence that games might cause. He just wants to feel like he's doing something good, and to make some money on it as well. When you have to ignore what others are telling you to help convince yourself that you are doing something right, that's a really good indication that you are doing something very wrong.

I think we are underestimating the fact that he is also a father, and to take this struggle so far it must be because he believes in it, unlike other posers, nevertheless he is also INCREDIBLY stubborn.

You have to take in consideration also that he has gone many times to federal courts and everytime his case has been rejected, personally, trying not to get off topic, i think it raises another issue, the fact that even if J.T. was right about violence in videogames, his case would never be considered, no offense to any americans, but many governments are more defensive toward the private sector than people themselves.

A responsible father would try to find out what is actually harmful to his children. A man with an agenda will chose a position, and defend it with half-truths. I don't think I need to tell you which of these two J.T.'s behavior follows.

I Agree but still that's our opinion against his, it actually is what i am saying, he does think and has actually found investigations by the APA about videogames in correlation with violence, NOW it doesn't mean that he is right, correlational studies have to be understood by people who know about it, while J.T. says it's an yargument to his case, kinda screwin up there, aren't you Jackie Boy confused.gif ...

Opinions are fine. Talking about your opinions is fine. Trying to pass legislations based on opinion is not fine. Opinion is just that, an opinion. You can share it with people who give a sh*t, but that's about it. Now, if you have an argument to support your opinion, we can have a discussion, and might even consider such measures as changes of policy. But if that argument is unsound, you should just shut the f*ck up, and get the f*ck out. If you keep pushing your opinion based on a bullsh*t argument, you are going to piss a lot of people off, and get nowhere at all. This is why I strongly dislike J.T., and not because he has an opinion that differs from mine. His opinions, just like anyone else's, matter not to me at all.
