Guybrush Threepwood
This argument seems strangely familiar. And just remember you can't engine brake with an auto. Well at least not without f*ckin it up. Kinda hard to stop a car with 4 wheel drums without power brakes at 70 mph with just the brakes That's where 'Tiptronic' comes in. Good luck with your test Guybrush, shame about the questions going up, but there have been roumours about that for a long time. Just something we'll all have to cope with, new drivers that is. You can wish me luck all you want, but Stretch is the one taking it.
123abc
I learned how to drive a stick in about 3rd or 4th grade with my dad. We had an old 81 Dodge Power Wagon 4x4 with a 4 speed granny 1st tranny, and a 318 v8.
Cran.
That's where 'Tiptronic' comes in. You can't exactly rev the sh*t out of the engine and drop the clutch with a tiptronic thought, can you?

Tiptronic and so on are only torque converter gearboxes. to be able to do what you describe you need a manual robotized clutch one (Ferrari F1 gearbox for ex) or a double auto clutch one (VW's DSG) Signature soon. 92F
I learned in a 1.5 diesel clio (manual) Surprisingly quick wee car. I don't understand what the big debate about auto vs manual is. My commute home (which takes anywhere between 7-9 hours) I would kill to have an auto, especially with all the stop and starting along the motorway if the traffic's lagging due to roadworks. What I would'nt mid getting in the future is what my mate has got: an Audi S3. It has the fancy auto/semi auto/manual gearbox and goes like sh*t off a shovel. *gta star*
Yeah, that's a 'Tiptronic' box, more than likely. Everyone has their own personal preferences, I actually like Automatic's though.

You're a Mercedes-bred person. Eventually, they drop their 7speed auto gearbox for the borg-warner double clutch system in 2008. Signature soon. *gta star*
It's supposed to reduce Co2 emmissions, when changing gear aswell, the torque is transferred to the other gear, and so forth as you keep changing. Also, it also helps the car take off faster.
JayC
I may be wrong but I think Pav and most of the others here know what a Tiptronic gearbox is. Maybe.
SIP YEK NOD
That's where 'Tiptronic' comes in. You can't exactly rev the sh*t out of the engine and drop the clutch with a tiptronic thought, can you? you will soon learn that clutches don't like 7k rpm dumps besides, if your engine has enough low-end torque, you should be able to smoke the tires from a standing start without tearing the sh*t out of the clutch. my pick-up is only 230hp with an automatic, and can do it. if its raining, it can do it from 20kph. snowing, 80kph. the only area where that becomes an issue is when its raining mid-winter and there is a good inch of ice on the road. try to get over 80, the f*cker downshifts, breaks traction, and you end up backwards in the ditch trying to keep momentum up to be able to climb out........ ....or so i'm told

Mega
So Pav, this means that Mercedes are getting rid of their Auto's then ? YEEEEEES!!!! bloody hell yes!, time to think on manual gearboxes for 500hp engines, like every sound&wise engineer does these days Signature soon. *gta star*
I suppose it's for the good really, lower emmissions, better fuel economy, more power, can't really ask for more.
lurchseesu420
I suppose it's for the good really, lower emmissions, better fuel economy, more power, can't really ask for more. Plus a dual auto clutch system is just as smooth as an auto, but it lets you do things that a "tiptronic" won't like engine braking all while being a sh*t load lighter than a big torque converter full of Auto transmission fluid. And weight is a big factor in everything in a car: Handling, acceleration, emmisions, fuel economy, even top speed to some extent. Everything can be improved with lighter weight. So it's time to get rid of slushboxes. Eventually the Dual Clutch systems will replace Autos and eventually (and sadly) even regular manuals will be phased out. Picolini
I've got an auto on my car, and I've only revved it in neutral and threw it into drive twice. Both were on accident. One time I just accidently hit the shifter, at 4K, and it spun out like f*cking nuts. The second time I was at a light revving next to a friend, basically messing around. The light turned green so I was like "Ohshi-!" and through it in to drive and gave it some gas. I was probably at around 3K, and it still spun out pretty good. Scared me for a second because I didn't expect it:p Fun stuff, I'd do it more if I didn't have to worry about blowing my trans Most of the time I can get a quick squeal if I just half-floor it anyways. Sniper.
I learned to drive in an automatic. But Im wanting to learn to drive manual too. As for my habits. BCspeed34
I tend to go right at the green too. Little drag racer instinct in me I guess. Bad habit, as I could probably miss something in front of me. ________________________________________ 専車SODO-MOTO International Vehicle Importers

ScoobyDoo82
I just got my permit last month, in drivers ed I learned how to drive in an automatic Ford Contour and at home I either have a Ford Explorer, Chevy Astro, or Ford F150 to drive, all are sh*t except the Explorer The Astro needs an alignment so your constantly swerving on the road, and the F150 doesnt idle it just stalls. I would like to learn how to drive a stick but when I get a car i'll probably stick with an automatic. Im still a beginner so im not doing all those burnouts and what-not, Im still getting used to driving with one hand, I can do it but after a while i start swerving in my lane and I need to drive with 2 hands to straighten out. I havent done anything dangerous other than when I took a turn going 20 in my moms Explorer, I never been more scared in my life it looked like it was gonna flip Edited October 5, 2007 by ScoobyDoo82

I hate Explorers. Had a few friends die in one a few months back. Roof caved in and Smushed the one in passenger seat like a bug. Had to cut the A pillar of to get to him. The drivers side was fine but he snapped his neck on impact. So needless to say I'm not a big fan of Explorers. And you'll get used to a stick after a while. Once you a do you can see how much better a stick really is. Edited October 5, 2007 by lurchseesu420
