stretch.
So considering I've got my first driving lesson tomorrow (as well as turning 17) I figured I might as well ask you guys about anything interesting that might've happened while you were behind the wheel learning. Did you try and take a racing line everytime? Floor it to beat a red light? Get pulled over by the cops? Your driving instructer take you dogging? Stuff like that Also out of curiosity, did you learn manual or auto transmission? Oh, and my lesson is at 8am
*gta star*
I'm learning in a Manual Nissan Micra (new shape). If you learn in a Manual car, you are entitled to drive either a Manual or Automatic when you pass your test. If you learn in an Automatic, you can only drive an Automatic. Anyway, I've had 4 lessons. I had a bad habit of when I was stopping, I used to always let my hands off the wheel, and put my hand on the handbrake. Apart from that, not had any other problems. Good luck with your lessons.

I learned to drive a manual, but ever since I started driving long distances for work and whatnot, I've only been driving an automatic. Kids these days go 'lawl automatics are fur awld peoplezz' Yeah well, guess what motherf*cker, I don't have to shift today, I'll see you when you're tired and weary and I'm still happily lazing along. Also, don't crash, cause that's bad.

Also, don't crash, cause that's bad. Manual is sh*t for stop-and-go traffic. First, clutch, second, brake, clutch, first, clutch. Repeat for 30-40 minutes. This man speaks many truths. Back to driving lessons. I think it's best to learn off with a manual, as I did. Learned with a 150hp Nissan Altima SE (2001) and I wouldn't say that I drive stick perfectly, but learning with manual is definately better than learning with an automatic. That way, if you ever want to buy a manual you'll already know how to work the paddle on the left and that thing in the middle of the car.

That thing in the middle of the car is my girlfriend flying around because she's too stupid to wear a seatbelt. And yes, ever since she made up her will I'm trying to purposely get her killed in an automobile accident.
*MURDOC*
When I started driving an auto, I had the tendency to have one foot on the gas and one on the pedal. Ive since grown out of that, but now when I go back to stick, It takes a few minutes to remember to use 2 feet. That thing in the middle of the car is my girlfriend flying around because she's too stupid to wear a seatbelt. If I were drinking milk, it would be out of my nose and onto my keyboard. Thank you for that.

It kills me when I don't have choice over my gears. As for learning, I learnt with my dad. Only thing worth mentioning was a roll back cook I did on a hill. Also @ Manuals in start stop traffic: Try doing it in a car with a heavy duty 'on or off' clutch, then come see me. Until then, stop your whinging. Rocketkiller
I learned to drive in an automatic 1994 plymouth sh*tbox. Had to floor the gas to get it moving, and had to keep my hand on the shifter to keep it from shifting into neutral. A few days later my dad let me drive his 200 hp ford escape, that was a difference. I floored it from a standstill and scared the sh*t out of my dad. The first manual I drove had an impossible to find 1st gear, it took literally minutes to find it because reverse was just a few millimetres to the left. I was 14 at the time though, so I had an excuse for sucking at driving.
Cran.
Only been learning with my father in my 1985 Nee-shan Bluebird. Nothing really entertaining has happened yet thought! The lack of manual gearbox is annoying me, though. Stupid slushbox.

stretch.
Haha, you've learnt in cooler cars than me! 05 Corsa Petrol Until the instructers car gets fixed then next week it should be a diesel wewt But yer, it was pretty cool, cost me £150 for 10 lessons though, and that's the introduction, so I'd better learn quick! Manual ain't so bad though, only stalled once in an hour of driving so not bad for a newb Got a decent car lined up for once I pass though, so yay, more money to spend 17 and working life sucks ass. spyro_ie
I still have to learn to drive. I haven't bothered to learn yet as I am in college and said to myslef, whats the point. When I finish college I'll probably get a car. I did have one lesson though. Drove about 10 miles in a ford fiesta. No insurance either.
stretch.
What car you planning on getting ? Fiat Punto, 55 Plate too, so not too old. It was either that or a 10 year old fiesta But still gonna cost me like £1500 for the car, £1800 ish for the insurance etc. Then running costs, road tax, mot's. eurgh Oh, and some pillock overtook me today! Even more annoying as I was going the speed limit... asshat.
Andrew
Meh happens all the time. I drive an 96 Astra 1.4 LS, damn that is slow at pulling away and acelerating that even old ladies in electric carts can over take! Pillocks are everywhere, after learning your best bet is to stick to the limit on roads you don't know. You've only got to get caught speeding and its back to learning again. Oh and don't stall coming out of a busy junction, not a good idea.
stretch.
hah, thankfully I only stalled once, and that was cos I didn't want to run a cat over and forgot all about depressing my clutch when ocming to a stop Ah well, lesson learnt! Cran.
Are you guys required to have insurance on your cars? Because all we need is 3rd party insurance.

stretch.
Are you guys required to have insurance on your cars? Because all we need is 3rd party insurance. Yer, we're required to have insurance, turns out the punto I'm buying is a 52, not a 55, so it's 3 years older, no big deal. 3rd party on it is gonna set me back about £1800 which is around 4,448.90 AUD. Fun huh. @Cold Fusion, was it 1 lesson? Because all that I'd give a six year old... if that to be honest. My feet prolly wouldn't have reached the pedals then, although I'm pretty squished in the corsa I'm learning in.
cold fusion 33
well i live partly on a farm with lots of land so i got to learn a lot and minis are obviously very small lol. OT: i love your avatar and title, parcel force suck!
Rebel
I'm having my first lesson soon not long until my birthday. But my mum has been taking me out for about a year now. So I know the basics and stuff like that. But my mum was always telling me to not cross your arms over while steering and try not to stall it alot. Although they are pretty obvious. stretch.
@Cold, Parcle Forec rawk @Rebel, Yeah, push pull steering, nice and jerky But yerm, I just convinced my brother to let me take our focus around in the carpark of the local spASDA, was fun. Definitely got much better handling than the corsa, not to mention a nice meaty engine My brother was shocked at my pretty good gear changes and me getting it up to
Mike
I had a lesson a week for just under 3 months, passed my test a month ago. Learned with BSM (who suck, but my instructor was good) in a 1.6l Astra, also had plenty of very helpful practice in my mum's car for only £1 per day on insurance! Got a '96 1.1l Saxo now. Manual all the way, by the way As for insurance, the car is owned by my mum and the policy is under her name, with me as a named driver; at least £1000 cheaper. But my mum was always telling me to not cross your arms over while steering Until after the test Oh, and some pillock overtook me today! Even more annoying as I was going the speed limit... asshat. That's tame, you'll get to see so much worse on the roads. While learning I was undertaken by a taxi when I indicating to change into the left lane anyway. I also got stuck behind someone who decided to stop at a green light to wave some pedestrians across the road.
matt11504
i drove a stick shift car around my yard once, i stalled a couple times before i got the hang of it. i will be getting my learners permit next year.
Primer43
Wow, where are you guys from. In the US driving laws must be lax. There isn't a separate license for manual/automatic and 1 speeding ticket you had to re-learn? I've gotten 2 speeding tickets, and went through a red light (it was yellow), and it cost me about $400 USD in combined fines. At first it seems ridiculous, but I'm used to our traffic laws, which are way to lax, imo. Drivings easy, especially once it becomes second nature. 92F
I got caught speeding twice in the same day, 6 weeks for the first time in my 5 years of driving. Was on my way home after finishing work (RAF Coningsby-Montrose, which is a 402 mile trip) took me 8 hours to drive and the final 100 miles to go I get flashed by a gatso (but thankfully have'nt recieved anything through the post) and then get caught by a police car sitting on a raised verge with a laser gun. 3 points and a £60 fine is something I'm not proud of. Primer43
I got caught going 73 in a 55 a couple months after getting my license, I know, I was an idiot. Then, a couple months ago, just after getting my new car and coming back from a graduation party, at 8 in the morning, I get pulled over going 94 in a 65. The cop reduced it on the spot to an 84, so I would "only be going 19 over". If he wouldn't have done that, my license would have been suspended, for going more than 20mph over. It cost me $200 just for that though. (reduced to 4 parking tickets) I've slowed down quite a bit since then. And still no points on my license.
