Racism in Music

Recommended Posts

Im Rick James B**ch!

Should racism in music protected by freedom of expression?

Since the inauguration of R.A.C, bands from many genres have associated themselves with the racist organisation. However, most bands represent the genres of hatecore, Oi!, National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM), hate rock, country and various forms of punk and metal. Today approximately 527 known white power bands exist worldwide.

WARNING: Those sensitive to the issue of race should not view the following!

Exhibit a):

Konkwista 88

Exhibit b):

Kolovrat

A video by Final War inspired me to consider the balance of freedom of speech and racism.

I am not here to argue my point, more to here the reasoning of yours. For me this is a social experiment. So, discuss.

NOTE: I am in no way implying though use of material that racism is "one-way".

All-Blacks

If it implies to all music forms, to me personally it should be banned, end of story. However, in this politically correct hypocritical sh*thole of a world, theres always some leniency towards one. If Hip-Hop is to allow anti-white sentiments, I don't see the problem in anti-black (by a non-black artist) comments in other genres etc. Although, its not that easy. We can all to a certain agree that white people can't exactly go around calling black people (in any shape of form) the 'N' word. It'll be their downfall. But, in this PC world, its apparent that other races, primarily black people, can insult us (us, as representing the white people) with racist terms and get away merely with a warning.

You hear about these anti-every-non-whites rock bands being publicised all the time (in fact I watched a Docu. discussing the issue not too long ago), but no one seems to mind anti-white Hip-Hop. No one actually takes note of white racism. At first it seems that although they're both equally racist, being anti-white isn't such of a big deal.

I hate everything these bands stand for but I believe they have the right to make whatever kind of music they choose. Just as I have the right to not listen to it, and to spit in their pig face if they want to hand me that sh*t just because I have the same color skin as them.

It's f*cked up the way people can be so closed minded and bigoted, but not letting them make music won't stop racism, and won't change their shallow minds.

I may hate what they have to say but I respect their right to say it. Acting on the message they preach is a whole other bag of potatoes.

No censorship under any circumstance. That's opening the door.

Why should it be banned? Music is a form of expression...

And, I'm surprised Chocolate Rain hasn't been mentioned yet. tounge.gif

Censorship to that extreme is an obvious infringement of the freedom of speech, but in the end there is a fine line between saying what you want and turning the freedom of speech into your bitch. Hateful, threatening speech, in my opinion, should be heavily limited and frowned upon extensively, the white supremacist bands are obviously getting loads of hate pointed their way but what about openly racist rappers such as Kanye West? They are topping billboard charts, getting airplay on every music channel (outside of CMT), making millions off of record sales, playing on all of the 'Hits' radio stations, and getting millions more in endorsements, but no one seems to notice nor care about their excessive anti-white sentiment.

A black guy can go about calling every single white person they see a honkey or a cracker, but if we even utter a word similar to ni**er than suddenly were under fire for being a racist, and will likely have several dozen Glocks pointed at our head. What is for some reason called reverse-racism is nothing more than racism with an extra adjective attached with a hyphen so it can seem to be less of an evil to society. The word ni**er is marked as being heavily racist because it was the term used for African Americans from the time it was decided that only they should be slaves to the time when civil rights was a new and frightening concept. But in the end what suffering their ancestors went through pales in comparison to Indian genocide, and all of the other bloody spots on the history of man such as the crusades, the holocaust and any other event which involved death or persecution because of ones race.

So why is it that African Americans can say whatever they want, whenever they want but if a white man even utters something remotely racist he is branded as a racist for the rest of his life? Because it's what the media, more importantly MTV, paints as the norm and people gladly accept it as the truth. Don Imus is a prime example, I can promise you one thing, if he was black no one would have even noticed that he said what he did because it's acceptable for a black man to say anything he damn well feels like on television.

NOTE: I used the term ni**er instead of 'the N word' for the sake of flow and effect, because honestly, saying 'the N word' would have mussed the flow and had less of a dramatic effect.

Wow.. I really liked the first song at the top, the vocals were crap, but I really liked the tune.

And no, I don't think music should be censored at all.

I wouldn't know what to do, music messages are very subliminal these days, but still in many parts of the world HATE is a crime

Censorship is bad in any form for any society that even attempts to be democratic. If you are worried about the racial hate message effecting children, this should be up to parents to control. If you can't trust people to do that, how the hell do you trust them with electing the government?

Anyone who is going to spread the message of racial hate is an ignorant moron, but I do not want to see the state attempting to silence these people. I want to see them phased out by new generations that are more open minded.

Deffinitely, but it's clear as other users have said, that racism in music is no trouble when it comes from a rappers mouth...hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm

Racism in the arts is one of those wonderful things that censors itself organically. Normal people don't want to listen to hate music. Funny enough, none of those folks have "glocks pointed at their heads." tounge.gif

When it comes to racism in rap music, we're talking about a different beast altogether. In this case, we're talking about a group, a segment of society, that still - right or wrong - feels persecuted by the white man. Therefore, songs that fight against the white man are a call to arms for the entire, like minded, group, and aren't met with the same visceral disgust.

They're both misguided and wrong, but neither should be censored.

True, it shouldn't be censored, but the fact that they are racist should at least be brought into the light. People either don't understand it or are just plain ignoring it, but there is no reason that it should be as highly tolerated as it is.

The message that most of them try to have is that 'the white man is keeping me down' when in reality they are keeping themselves down. It's not 'the white man's' fault that they are undereducated, it's their own doing. I've know plenty of black folks who could have had a chance to do something with their life, get out of the ghetto, etc., but they chose a life of gangbanging, and/or dealing instead and it's of their own design, not some scheme by us white folks to keep them oppressed. So in the end their racism is drastically misguided, it should in reality be pointed at themselves, because they are the ones holding themselves back.

I don't think it is tolerated among people who don't share the sentiment, though. You know what I mean?

That's true, but what I should have said is that the people who share said sentiment shouldn't tolerate it as much as they do, or at least they should get a better understanding so they won't be so closed minded and be able to look at the other side of the argument with better understanding.

Right, but you have to be careful about that. You don't want to spark racial tension with something like that. You have to be very clear in your message to make sure that it is not interpreted as a call to action against any group. Even saying something along the lines of, "Lets stop racism," can have some effects that you won't be happy with. What needs to be done is bringing another perspective to the ignorant masses.

We can always argue we are expressing ourselves and no one can deny that, they can't even reasonably take it offensively bored.gif

Reasonably, I don't know why anyone takes anything offensively. But that's people.

Maybe we don't because it's entertainment, i think i've never got offended by any form of music or anything, but i would understand why, the problem is that people believe they are being offended when they are not.

Due to my name, you may think this post would be biased.

I don't belive that the music should be censored, no matter what content. I just think that they should stick with the explicit content sticker. I am against Racism, but in the US we have the first ammendment for a reason, to allow us to speak our beliefs.

Many people are Racist, and that is their beliefs, if we take that away, wouldn't the whole constitution collapse?

bands like these give a bad name to the whole metal genre.... thats why i hate them. they encourage the negative stereotyping of a genre of music that isnt as bad as certain neo-conservative bastards would have you beleive.

as for their whole "message" and rights i think they should have the freedom to say what they want. i get by just fine ignoring them.

Metal genre? Umm... Thats not metal. If anything, Oi! has been pigeonholed as the racist genre.

One aspect of this discussion which i would like to address is the claims that racism is "closed minded" or "shallow". Thats fine if you concluded that from contemplation, but some of you (a minority) are true representations of narrow minded belief. For you label ideologies as "shallow" when your whole opinion is just a social normality formulated by by conformity. Racist are more open minded then you, for they have atleast explored alternative beliefs. Even though these particular artist have obscure logic, racism in itself is not such an ignorant argument and is prevalent in all facets of society, despite the verisimilitude of PC.

My principle complaint about neo-nazi skinheads is that their mannerisms are not "white" ones.

how do you KNOW thast the skinheads have explored alternative beleifs?

most of the time this isnt the case. 99% of them never bother to look past their own ideologies. i dont mind having a civilized chat with anyone, evn a skinhead as long as hes willing to respect my opinions and not judge me just cos im not white.

and i dont think theres anything wrong with being proud of your race... AS LONG AS YOU DONT THINK PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES ARE LOWER THAN YOU.
