Blockland was originally programmed by Eric Hartman, and his version can be bought from this website. We play a modified version of this called Return to Blockland, which is entirely free and has a very active community behind that can be found at that website. How does it work? Once somebody has set up a dedicated server with which everyone can play together, you simply join the game, and proceed to shoot other players (all represented by LEGO men) or build enormous constructions. The building system's simple logic is identical to the LEGO toy's system - bobbles, that connect other bricks with bobbles. This goes on forever until everyone gets bored, and the level is changed and more structures are built. The more people building, the more innovative the structures, and the more fun is had! How can I play? RTB is very simple to install. Download the installer from the website here (new download link; old one is broken), and run it, following each step to the end. When it asks for you to name a location; this is where all the games' files will be installed to. I recommend putting them in their own folder, since there is a lot of them, and just installing to My Documents may wreak havoc. So let's say C:\RTB. Once it has finished, locate the installation (in this case C:\RTB) and double-click the file 'Play RTB' (NOT 'blockLand'). The game will launch and all should be fine (if the game does not launch or there is an error, this is most often because you do not have the latest graphics drivers; click here). Once you're in, click 'Join Server' on the left, and a new box will open. If a server is started, locate its name and enter a password in the box at the top, according to what people are currently using (see the bottom of this post). Then click 'Join Server' at the bottom right and wait for it to load! What are the controls? For the main game's controls, press Ctrl+O while in game and click 'Controls' at the top. This lists all the basic manouevers, such as how to move, how to fly, how to lay bricks and so on. As for what it doesn't explain - look at the bottom of the screen. There are 10 black brick outlines, and each will contain a different object to use, such as a hammer (for destroying bricks), a paint can (for painting things) or new bricks for laying. Select whichever you want by pressing the corresponding key on your keyboard, and then scroll through their own options using the mouse wheel. For other server-related tasks press Ctrl+A. I remember it was on that TV show the Screen Savers then everyone got it, then they made retail, and that wasn't that good. Good to see someone else plays it here! If you are, and it keeps saying something like "blockLand.exe has encountered.." etc, even though you aren't runnign blockLand.exe, then I think you'll need to reinstall.
