The game didn't like me shoving a copper's head through the window of his very damaged police car. The car blew up, and the game crashed. tounge.gif

@Azazel well atleast is was the most epic crash ever probably.

I'm so going to try that, but without the crash I hope. tounge.gif

is also strange how the game doesn't have any up-side-car animations, the makers of the game didn't knew we are going

to roll the car confused.gif

@above: They probably didn't even think it was possible to do it since they're so heavy.

I suppose a lot. Am I right?

Eitherway I haven't succeeded in doing it though.

I've been trying to keep my cars intact, which I fail at everytime.

I'm going to try to roll one tomorrow because I'm taking a break from it for today, since I already feel I'm getting addicted, and it's just the demo.

Anyone gotta an answer to which map is bigger, GTA IV or Mafia 2.

Mafia 2's map is apparently 10 square miles in size. I think that is smaller than GTA 4, I seem to have a figure in my head of 14 square miles for GTA 4 but can't remember if that is correct or not. So the map in Mafia 2 is a bit smaller, it should also be noted that Mafia 2 has far fewer roads than GTA 4.

What you have to remember here is that GTA 4 was a rendition of a 21st century modern city. Mafia 2 on the other hand is a rendition of a city where car travel whilst not "rare" wasn't exactly as wide spread as it is today. In fact a few of the roads in Mafia 2 are little more than dirt tracks still.

GTA IV obviously has the bigger map. And judging by the demo, the city isn't detalized much. confused.gif I'd say on the same level as GTA 4.

6 years in development - they could make city a bit better and bigger.

Well I think the city is fine the way it is, the most important thing for me is the story.

(Yes I realize what an awful cliché that is, but it is what Mafia II is all about for me)

mafia 2 isn't detailed as gta 4, maybe because it has seasons, and changing years...

and as we know from first mafia, every mission is more detailed, and it will not look the same when you free-roam.

edit: agree with the post above

Does anyone here feel that the NPC's and Cops need more work? I bribed cops 3 times now, and everytime (even on the highway) they just walk along after staring into your eyes for about 4 seconds.

Few observation regarding mafia 2 demo

-IV euphoria engine is better then mafia-s physics engine...but mafia-s graphics engine definitely beats graphic aspect of RAGE Engine.

-Mafia 2 characters and random pads are better modeled and look more realistic

-detail level of both games is similar(but ve have seen just a mafia-s demo...)

-colors in mafia are more vibrant

PC Version >>owns>> console (yessss)

-no stuttering,pop-ups and all that crap that bugged me in IV

-APEX can be modified so that it doest hit performance so much(see mafia 2 comunity forum)

-and i forogot...shooting cops is fun again,i hated when in IV cops spawn out of nowhere..and kill me

I'm a dreamer too much but it would be nice if river was frozen in winter and Vito could walk on it. smile.gif

Well, not question about Euphoria. It is the best thing on the market. But the tweaked Rage engine in Red dead redemption is pretty beautiful equal to Mafia 2 in mu opinion. But this is on console judgement. The PC version of mafia 2 looks mega brilliant.

However, does anyone else have trouble with the APEX PhysX?  I tried the PhysX solutions that people had posted above, but that only worked outside of the mission, inside the mission the PhysX lags like sh*t.

Have you tried the latest physx driver ? it was released today and was downloaded as part of a Mafia 2 steam update (it just downloaded the file not installed it). You can get the latest physx software here :-

http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.10.0513-driver.html

alternatively lookin in your steam folder and browse to steamapps/common/mafia ii - public demo/3rd

The file is called "PhysX_9.10.0513_SystemSoftware"

Hmm, interesting...

Well, it's really a cliche now, but the detail is astonishing !!

Did you know that you can also enter a car by SHOOTING THE CAR LOCK ?

Just watch:

biggrin.gif

@freak2121: That is really a progress, but I guess I will wait until the 27th, don't want to spoil everything now...

I love the demo man; wow!

I've played it for 3 hours and I absolutely love it, I think this game will definetely be the "Game of the Year -2010".

I do have an ATi card and I am aware that PhysX is only meant to work for just Nvidia cards properly, but I'm sure there's a way around it, because all of it goes to the CPU not GPU, which I'm trying to find a workaround...

If anyone knows a way, please do PM me or something! biggrin.gif.

Well apex thing is overrated, takes a lot and gives so little...who cares about cloths moving a bit better and small bearly visible particle effects(they are clearly visible on sreenshots, but ingame everything is happening so fast...you just have no time to notice those things)

Aint posted in here for a while and this will probably be my last post in this thread til I complete the game (I don't want another RDR style spoilerfest ruining the story for me tounge.gif).

However, the demo:

Liked

The interactivity of the city, even random things like working taps.

Character customisation looks good as does car customisation.

Shootouts were a lot of fun and the way one or two shots could kill ya meant I had to be a lot more tactical. Loved it.

Different types of wanted levels was a nice touch, like how you could be remembered for your appearance or number plate etc.

Very, very pretty.

The voice acting seems sublime and the script was funny (what we heard of it).

The soundtrack was immense.

Disliked

The driving. It will grow on me I guess.

Not enough gore. Damn.

Ped AI seemed a bit strange. Same with other drivers too; crashing full speed into a woman and she doesnt even flinch in her car, just drives off. Odd.

In summary, it looks like it will be a hell of a game with a few niggling annoyances with driving (this is just me) and silly AI. But then if that bothered me I wouldn't have bothered with The Godfather games. This game looks brilliant, cannot wait til it's out.

The demo runs pretty smooth, but does Vito always have to take a pause between things? I go up to a telephone booth to pull a woman out, but he seems to take his sweet time to pull her out of the booth. Hijacking vehicles (parked or not) also takes a while (have to do the hijack action twice). Those aside, I think Mafia 2 is going to be amazing.

Now, comparing Mafia 2' map with GTA IV's map. GTA SA was about 14 square miles, and GTA IV is said to be 3/4 the size. That would be 10.5 square miles while Mafia 2 is also said to be ten square miles. However, if you use the measuring thing on Mafia 2's map, Mafia 2's map is really not much larger than four square miles (including water). That is not much larger than GTA VC, but it still feels quite a bit larger. Maybe it has the same illusion as GTA III has in a way. GTA III's map is smaller than GTA VC's map, but at the same time it feels a bit larger. I'm not really sure if it's four or ten square miles, but it still feels like it's going to be decent size just judging from the demo.

Also, what guns have been used in the demo? I used six different guns. There's the MG 42 (hopefully you can get a man-portable one), the 1911 Semi (Colt 1911), the .38 Revolver, the Shotgun, the Thompson M1A1 (thirty round box used by police), and the Thompson 1928 (fifty round drum used in mission).

Those graphic comparisons are so f*cking stupid. Believe me, if you have an HDTV and HDMI, the game will look phenomenal on the PS3. This is not just for Mafia 2, but for every game. For some reason in those videos it makes it look as if the PS3 version sucks ass, which it doesn't.

Great game BTW, only got to play for about 3 minutes last night though.

Haha, sure. Explain how those comparisons are stupid? Considering they we're done in 1080p on all three different platforms during the exact same sequences using capture cards/FRAPS.

I'm sure it looks phenomenal, but it makes sense that the PS3 would get the short straw since Mafia was designed with the PC in mind which uses Direct X, same as the Xbox while the Playstation uses Open-GL same as Macs (haha).

Your fanboyism is showing, might want to hide that, since it's starting to stink up the place.

GTA3Freak-2001
Fix for bad APEX performance (works very well, I get a steady 35+ until sh*t hits the fan and it drops below 10)

I got APEX to work on my ATI without losing a single frame. I just deleted the effects folder and all of the unnecessary APEX files. Now Vito has full APEX and game still runs smooth as before. Nvidia fails lol

Care to help a ATI brother out? So you delete the effects folder but what other files do I need to remove?

Great demo, really got a kick out of it all for the same reasons as most of you folk so consider it bought!

They're stupid because they're making it out as if the PS3 version really looks that differently bad. Which it doesn't. I just played the demo again not one minute ago and it no where near looks that dull and colorless.

And, how exactly am I being a fanboy? For pointing out that the PS3 version doesn't look as bad as the video claims it does?

You have to remember that this game, unlike GTA IV, takes place over 10 years, so the map will have a load of small changes as time moves on, plus the changes include seasons, the city is covered in snow at one point as well as an Autumn leaves effect.
