Yeah same here. Mafia was story driven and that made the game gold. You didn't want to customize your character or buy property or any of that sh*t, you just wanted to know what was gonna happen next. The game literally had me hooked as I thrived to know what would happen next.

This game, as hard as it's trying not be, looks like, dare I say, a GTA clone. It looks too similar, visually, to the Godfather games. The shooting system looks bad, what with the absence of body reaction to being pelted with bullets, stiff shooting animations, lack of blood, etc. And the driving looks like f*cking Crazy Taxi if you ask me.

It just seems to have lost the charm of the first title. I dunno, I know people are gonna say it's too early. But rarely is the game's final product any different.

It's coming out in FALL! Plenty of time to work on it if you ask me.

And final products are different. Especially free roaming games. They tend to change a lot from beta footage to final product.

Haha funny guy tounge2.gif

Hoping for some more blood splatter in the final product, wasn't enough in that gameplay clip for my bloodthirsty taste.

Oh, wow. That sure is a lot of pop-in. I'm hoping that wasn't the PC version.

The walking looks beautiful, though. The lights, the "Extra! Extra!" guy... Wow. This looks great.

I read that earlier and it didn't register, kinda cause other games I want (Arkham Asylum) are coming out about that time. Holy sh*t, that's like 2 months from nowish. Hope it's accurate...

That Day In The Life vid gets me excited. All 3 parts are out now, not sure if it was before, but here they are:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Look at the sexy lighting, especially at the end of Part 1 with the lights in the parking lot.

I was thinking of picking up Godfather 2 or maybe the first one as I haven't played it, but after seeing these I'll probably wait.

My one concern is that it'll be like IV, not much to do round the city. Hopefully there's a few restaurants and shops that we can just go into and intimidate the owners, or just level the place and everyone in it with our Tommy Gun.

The animation on the faces in the dialogue is bloody amazing.

Just hope there's more strategy than walk-shoot-walk-shoot.

I think R* had a much better marketing technique by releasing new trailers and screenshots all the time. People have been talking about this game since 2007 and all we got this far is two trailers and a few screenshots.

People have been waiting for this game much longer than 07 and I think this strategy is a whole lot better because it makes the whole anticipation a lot better. I don't want to know half of the game's details and story line plots until I actually play the game. Constant updated spoil the game for what it's worth.

One translation here: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34404

The first „Mafia” turned out (pretty unexpectedly) to be an amazing game with a movie-like gangster story. It's sequel is one of the most anticipated game of 2009. Will 2KCzech handle staying up to the level of the first game, released in 2002? We had an opportunity to ask Denby Grace- producer of 2KGames a few questions about Mafia II.

Filip Grabski: Why have you decided to leave out the 1930s from the game? Is it because 40s and 50s are more exciting? Or because the cars are nicer? Or maybe somebody gave you an offer you can't refuse?

Denby Grace: Mafia had a unique story and atmosphere, which was one of the things we want to keep in Mafia 2. Making the sequel 10 years forward from the original story gave us an opportunity to create something completely new, glamorous and very movie-like. This period is a very important part of getting into the game and experiencing it. 40s and 50s were very interesting times in the history of the United States, and we were very excited that, for the game, we can explore this new and interesting world.

I'm afraid it's hard not to compare your game to GTA IV. Are you sure that Mafia II will be in the same “league” after its release?

I think it's natural for people to compare Mafia II and GTA IV, but really, these games are dramatically different... Of course, they are both third person action games with stories about the criminal world and showing off driving around town, but that's about it. Our game is set in an authentic period, and is concentrated on the story much more. Both games offer an attractive entertainment, but you can't choose one or another.

Is Mafia II the game of one story(like the first game) or is it more like GTA/Saints Row- with lots of bonus objectives and challenges for the player to rest from the main missions? And if yes- what kind of activities can we participate in while exploring the city?

First of all, Mafia II is a game with strong main story, just like the first one. There are, however, a few sidequests, but they are there to strengthten the story. For example, Vito can buy a suit, repair his car, everything you'd expect from a character from mafia.

So we will be able to earn money and spend it on various things?

Money is the main motivation for Vito and Joe when they join the mob, so they play a quite big role in the game. Just like in real life- for money you can buy food, clothes, cars, etc.

If you were to compare the size of Empire Bay and Lost Heaven- what does it look like, how big it is, does it have any suburbs or any adjacent areas?

The city in Mafia II is exactly ten square miles(over 26 square kilometers), so it's twice as big as Lost Heaven. It has 20 different districts/areas- from Chinatown, to Little Italy, to suburbs with a lot of white fences. Everything what you might expect from city in the 50s will make an appearance in the game.

Are you planning to do a mature and serious game, or did you stick some jokes and surprises here and there for some nosy players?

Our goal is to make players experience a mature and compelling entertainment. We leave cheesy jokes behind.

Tell us about the story and characters. What will make Vito Scaletta a memorable character? Will we like him or will we hate him?

Vito was born in Sicily. His family emigrated to the States when he was just a boy. Living in American slums was a big motivation for him to become “someone”. Vito is a generally good kid, but environment affected him. In Mafia II Vito starts like the most young men- poor, unexperienced and ready to prove his worth. He and his friend Joe want to make the “American dream” come true, and that means earning a lot of money, power and respect from all the people surrounding them. Vito will earn it all in the end, but by experiencing a lot of hard moments and sacrifices.

Joe Barbaro is Vito's best friend, who's his companion for the most of the game. While Vito could have chosen another way to success(if he was raised under different circumstances), but Joe had only one way. He's a born scamp and he attracts trouble, but he's a lovable guy. He's the kind of man you'd like to go to the town with, even if you know it will end up in a bar fight and you'll land in jail or even worse. Vito met Joe while still in his youth, and they were growing up together. Vito was rather weedy and he realized he needs somebody for protection. Joe, on the other hand, needed some kind of assistent, and since they both came from Sicily, Vito took him under his wings. Vito used his head, and Joe used strength of his muscles and they quickly became best friends. It is not important for Joe if someone respects him or is scared of him- as long as the outcome is the same. When we meet him in the game, his life is beer, ladies and bullets- and he sure wouldn't like to live differently.

The first Mafia was rather linear. Do you plan to make any changes? Do you want to make the player come up with the idea on how to accomplish his task? Maybe offer him a possibility to finish the mission in different ways? Does Mafia II offer multiple endings?

The main story is linear, but there are a few “branches”. Yes, there will be multiple endings for the game, but obviously I can't talk about it. Coming back to missions- yes, we do offer the player a few options to accomplish the task. For example- is it better to give up using guns and stay undetected or shoot everything in sight. And multiple endings will make you play the game again.

What about the details- radio stations, pedestrains on the street, the indoors, car stealing... How much time have you given to polish these little details?

An unbelievable amount of hours has been given for working on the details: the indoors, appearance and behaviour of NPCs- the game is extremely detailed and painfully authentic if it comes to the times when the game is set. If you ask about the radio- we're not ready yet to reveal the full soundtrack, but I assure you that you will hear a lot of authentic hits from the times.

Will the police still be as arduous as in the first game? Will we be punished for all the red lights we pass, very minor crashes or speeding?

The whole “police system” was definitely upgraded from the first one. Of course, you will face consequences if you break the law, but reactions of policemen will be more rational. They won't go after you through the whole town for speeding a little.

How many cars are there in the game? Is there anything else besides cars? Motorcycles? Boats? Planes?

There are a lot of cars from the game's period. Unfortunately the final number of cars isn't yet known.

Is the extended trailer of Mafia II really rendered realtime? Or maybe you used some post production magic to enhance it a bit? PC requirements are an important factor- what kind of rig do you have to have to run the game like it looks in the trailer?

The trailer was done entirely on the game's engine, without any thirdparty applications used to enhance it's appearance. What you've seen there, you will see in the game. Our engine and production tools are very powerful and we are proud of them. If you ask about the requirements- we can't say anything for now. Of course we do everything we can to optimize it so the biggest number of players can enjoy it.

What about the release date?

As for now, the game is set to release in Autumn 2009.

The last but mandatory question: what are your plans for the future? Can we expect a third Mafia? Set in the 70s? Like in the movie “Casino”?

Our plans are limited to Mafia 2 only- we want to finish it.

Thank you for your time and we wish you luck.

and a video here:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/48483.html

"The level of interactivity is phenomenal: Vito turns off a radio, moves chairs, opens up some random lockers. The number of unnecessary details is multiplied by two and in case with Mafia 2 such maniacal work especially touches you for some reason. Evidently because in any other game you don't want to open all these lockers and chests of drawers."

Hello guys,

Thank you for all the nice posts.

As for the bullet shells, we are still working on the special effects in general, you can expect those to be improved definitely.

About the Czech signs in the game - we are trying to make the game much more international this time around. Instead of eastern eggs just for Czech audience we are putting in some for hardcore fans of Mafia I - no matter their nationality.

And as for the 2004 rumors about Daniel Vavra, you can probably imagine that such strong/eccentric person as he is does have some "moments" here and there but generally that is what makes him the character he is and helps him to inspire the team.

http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthrea...?t=34541&page=2

Damage on cars - our models are very detailed and enhanced by proper physics simulation. You can even notice things like opening doors because the lock was shot or tires bursting because of fire.

City usage - we do try to guide the player much more into the various corners of the city to explore, especially on some of the sub-quests.

Outskirts - we do have outskirts area of the city which feel very different and provide some quite unique experiences.

Blood - we are still working on the special effects and we do have our plans for improving the blood effects.

Demo - I cannot confirm or deny anything at this point, but I would say that it would make sense to have it sometime down the road.

http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthrea...?t=34541&page=3

and something about the developers.

...of course he(Daniel Vavra) is still with us, working hard on our next project.

His work as a writer/designer on Mafia II was finished: it is as simple as that. Now it´s up to people like our Animation Director or Director of Production - and of course all the individuals within the team - to deliver on Daniel´s Vavra original vision and script, with which we are definitely on the right track I would say. You also have to remember that almost everyone from the Mafia I team is still at the core of the Mafia II team: that should be also quite strong guarantee.

Unfortunately since Mafia I Vladimir Simunek started to work on different kinds of music (Czech pop music etc.) outside game industry. But after setting up an international musician contest we have picked Matus Siroky and Adam Kuruc from many talented artists: and because Matus actually sits in the studio and works on the music 8 hours a day (and he is very talented to begin with), the results are surpassing Mafia I music in our opinion (and we had only positive feedback from outside so far as well).

Thanks for the info freak2121, some interesting stuff there.

I love the way almost everything in that mission was destructable. Eve the enemies use innovative cover methods, one guy pushed a table over and took cover behind it.

The only grievance I have is the driving, but I dont care, everything else looks perfect.

Nice info freak. Good to see the blood effect is being worked on.

I may sound like a disturbed bastard but I'm kinda hoping for some sticky, grisly deaths. Like (Casino Movie spoiler) Joe Pesci's character getting beaten to death with steel bats in Casino. It is the Mafia after all, not everything is ended with a bullet to the head.
