Mafia 2

I recently replayed Mafia 2. In my opinion is still a very good looking game despite being ten years old. I don't believe it needs a remaster. What really needs is to get back all the content that was cut from it. The original Mafia needs a remaster much more. But neither of those things will happen, if this game ever gets "remastered" it will be a port to the new consoles with some higher resolution textures, and voila. Something you can do already in the PC version with mods.

Mafia 2 is much easier to remaster because its gaming mechanics are more modern. They can improve the graphics, resolutions and framerate and call it a day.

With the original Mafia they would have to do more than that. That game has not aged well at all in terms of gameplay, unfortunately. So obviously TakeTwo is gonna choose the cheaper and easier way.

A proper "remake" of Mafia 2 should be the game in it's pure, original vision. Without Zelnick's abysmal obssession for immediate profits. If you know anything about this game, you know it went through years of development hell. It was restarted because of a change of the game engine (initially they used Renderware, the same engine as the 3D era GTA's) and also a new console generation. It was going to be a marvel, but Take Two obviously didn't want it to overshadow it's premier product. So they bought the studio and started cutting endless amount of stuff. Entire chapters of the story, characters, parts of the map, features, etc. The game needed at least one more year of development, but they wanted it for sale by Christmas of 2010 and that's why we got a very short game. Great game, but very short. The core mechanics are there, but Mafia 2 feels unfinished. And it's a shame. I truly believe that, in some aspects, Mafia 2 overshadows every single GTA, even IV which is my favourite.

That's why I don't have too much hopes for a new Mafia. The third game was made by American developers without connection to the original Czech ones, and the game ended up being stale and soulless.

Personally, I'm happy if all Mafia II gets is a resolution bump and a hi-res texture pack (bit like the 4K treatment given to the backwards-compatible Xbox One X version of RDR) - the worry about going more like Saints Row the Third Remastered* (or as that Reddit link suggests, a more drastic ground-up remake like the recent Resident Evil ones) is that things like the vehicles might get redesigned, and IMO, Mafia II is the gold standard by which all other pastiche videogame vehicles should be judged (compare the Smith Thunderbolt to GTA's Vapid Peyote - there's no contest).

*to be fair to SR3R, the vehicle changes actually make them more realistic, like those in Mafia II - but still, when the starting point is something as good as the Shubert Frigate, there's not much room for improvement, and plenty of opportunities to make things worse... :*(

I disagree, I think the game still holds up today. But yeah I think they will just throw in some higher resolutions, better draw distance and a borderless fullscreen mode and that's it.

I can see why you believe that, but in my view, it does not overshadow it, but rather provides a different presentation and game style to experience a similar crime-ridden fictional world to that of Grand Theft Auto. Whereas Mafia is more grounded, heavier to control and has more controlled approach to story missions design, the latter is more wacky and mindless in comparison, and this can also be said about the writing. Both games are supposed to serve different audiences, but  players like me enjoy each one on its own. In some ways, Mafia 2 felt, visually looked and played more polished to GTA IV, but this, to an extent, might be due to the fact that it released two years after IV.

Mafia III: Definitive Edition

That's a game from this gen, so unless it's a game for the PS5, that seems kinda pointless.

How would that work when the people who made Mafia 2 what it is, don't work there anymore.

A lot of 2k Czech became part of Hangar 13 and actually worked on Mafia III.

I just stated what I believe would be the ideal Mafia 2 remake. I know it's never going to happen, and not just because of what you mention. The cut content might have been lost forever.

Well, there is "Mafia III: Deluxe Edition", which is the game and the season pass (i.e. all three story expansions), but not the free DLC (races, car customisation, outfits, weapons) or the paid/pre-order DLC pack - so at the very least, there's some reason to have a version where all of that is included, particularly if you're buying a physical copy. Not really much to write home about, ordinarily - but it makes more sense in the context of both it and Mafia II getting feature-complete re-releases as part of a larger franchise revival.

The only other explanation would be new/cut features (too much to hope that Mafia III gets a version of the older games' "carcyclopedia"?), or upgrades beyond what we already got with the Pro/1X patches - and again, in that instance, I'd expect that sort of thing to get added to existing copies of the game as an upgrade patch, rather than anything drastic enough to warrant a second purchase (2K would be taking the piss if they did...).

...*phew* - nothing to worry about! :colgate:

Even better news: it's apparently coming out next week (:panic:), on May 19th - !!!

Only thing it needs now is screenshots enabled on Xbox One - for some reason, the backwards-compatible 360 version disables screenshots, and now that the game looks suitably crisp and clean, it'd be a crime not to allow a bit of virtual photography.

Grain of salt, but maybe a remake is coming.....?

Definitive Edition was also rumored this way. I think on 4chan or Reddit. I honestly would rather have a completely new Mafia game instead of a remake.
