360 controller map?

Recommended Posts

baseballbaseball

Any way to play VC with a 360 controller? I can't get it to map the right analog stick or the trigger buttons.

Search function on the forum is down "for performance reasons," so I can't search for this probably-very-common query!

I am assuming you have an Xbox controller plug to USB adapter, right? If so, plug that in and turn on the computer. Now go to Control Panel -> Game Controllers. Click on "Add..." and select an appropriate game controller for your needs, or you can select "Custom".

Now just launch Vice City and use the "Classic Controls" and redefine the settings, if necessary.

I think there is a special program that you have to download, but I doubt it 'cuz I am not sure...

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, the 360 controller drivers install automatically, and configuring seems impossible because the Y axis is set to be controlled by the trigger buttons.

Using the Classic Controls setting doesn't let you use the right analog stick to control POV camera, nor does redefine-key feature allow you to use the right analog stick.

Why would it come with drivers? The Xbox controller doesn't provide driver support for PC users. It looks like it's using the Windows generic ones.

and configuring seems impossible because the Y axis is set to be controlled by the trigger buttons.

Did the "driver" you are talking about came with a software? If so, then use it. If not, then use the one in Control Panel -> Game Controllers until you get things working out for you.

Try this piece of 3rd-Party software: http://planetgrandtheftauto.gamespy.com/Vi...ps.Detail&id=62

Thanks again, but the program you directed me to costs a membership fee.

If anyone has a free program or any other ideas?

Bleh, I hate FilePlanet.

Grab it free from its original location here.

RoF is incorrect about the 360 controller. It is a Windows XP/Vista controller supported by Microsoft. It is correct that the basic driver isn't configurable. However, using 3rd party drivers like XBCD 360. Good luck mapping the right stick.

Thanks jnzooger -- totally got it working.

For people who are having problems mapping the right analog, see this thread on an XBCD forum.

From the post (credit to "Wretch"):

Got this working. Set to classic controls in options menu in-game.

under 'xbox' tab set right stick to:

up: RZ-

down: RZ+

left: Z-

right: Z+

under 'windows' tab, set Z and RZ as selected, de-select all other axes. Then, set those axes to 'threshold' of '85'.

Enjoy!

EDIT: still needs tweaking! This profile makes it so that the right analog controls the standing-still first-person, but not the running-around-and-killing-dudes camera. BUt it's definitely a start.

That's how classic controls work. That is how it was on PS2 for III and VC. If you want it the PC way, set the controls to standard and the right stick to mouse x and y.

I use xbcd as well.

Here is the controller profile I made for gta III and Vice City.

You still need to set up the controls in the games, but I have the right stick mapped as 4 buttons (one each for up, down, left right) and the triggers mapped to buttons.

You can also press on the sticks as a button, and the "start" and "back" keys are mapped as regular buttons.

I would map Start as ESC. Just to give it that pause effect.

I'll have to double check next time I play but I think I have it mapped to switching the camera - it wouldn't be too hard just to go in and re-map it in xbcd smile.gif.

For me, the Camera would be on Back, but then again, I use a Logitech Dual Analog and the PS2 layout. *shrug* To each his own.
